I Just Bought Metal Gear Solid 2

<div class="IPBDescription">And need some help.</div> I have recently purchased a used copy of MGS2 for $13 and I have a problem with the game: I have no clue as to what happened in MGS 1. MGS2 is an amazing game and I love it even with only a few hours of tranq-gun-fun under my belt, but I get the feeling that I'm missing a huge ammount of storyline (and I probably am). Would any of you forumites be so kind as to give me a quick synopsis of what happened in the first MGS?

In particular, I would like the followng qusetions answered:

1) Why is everyone so spooked by Metal Gears? I've gotten the impression that some people hold them on the level of nuclear weapons - what makes them so powerful?

2) Why is Snake working for a group opposed to Metal Gears?

3) Who were key people in MGS 1? I've run into/heard about the following:
a) Raven (? - didn't catch the name too well). This guy carries a HUGE minigun and a backpack that looks like a 747 engine. Only seen a small statue of him in-game.
b) A white-haired fellow whose name I don't know - it's quite long, Russian sounding, and begins with an S. Carries a revolver, and doesn't hesitate to use it. In MGS2, he apparently is planning to betray the Russian General on the marine ship that has the Gear REX.

Thanks for your help!

Metalgear can launch a nuculear strike from anywhere on the planet, to anywhere on the planet.

Because that's been Snakes mission from the first game. First game being Metal Gear.

Raven was a boss you fought twice in MGS1, once in a tank, once when we had his miniguun. He rules.

The other guy is Revolver Ocelot. Totally nutso cool, even if he has a strange sexual thing for his gun. He can't die right.

    Oh yeah, and play MGS1. MGS2 sucks. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well, major spoilers in here for why Snake is working against them now

<span style='color:black'>Snake was an unwanted anomaly in MGS1. As such he was branded as a terrorist by the government, and was forced into hiding along with Otacon. Needless to say, he holds a grudge against this government.

But what government this is, is up to you to find out later in the story.</span>

PURPLE SPACEWORMS! (yes MGS related, you'll find out)

Raven is a uy that simply holds a huge minigun and has ravens all around. He has a good code of honor, but worked for the wrong people. Hence, he died at Snake's hands.

And the guy with the revolver is Revolver Ocelot. Another cool cahracter I might say....shame he had to take someones hand and stick it onto his cut-off hand.

And Metal Gears, like Testament said, can launch nukes from anywhere, to anywhere in thw rold. They also require weapons with special rounds to defeat them. The most you could do with a common everyday weapon is slightly malfunction them, but that's t.

Eh...I guess I got the Snake thing wrong. I need to play MGS again.

Actually, the government does send him to dispatch Metal Gears, but unfortunately, the one destroyed in MGS was unwanted, as stated in MGS2.

Gets funny to serious there. And then it constantly gets bizzare, like the Fission Mailed screen XD

I couldn't bring myself to get very far into MGS2 actually. I was almost done collecting the bombs then got sick of it and returned it to the rental place.

Pff, you should've continued further to meet another cool character that pretty much rivals Revolver Ocelot : Fatman

    Laugh, and grow fat.

I played MGS1 AFTER MGS2... it was weird... anyway MGS2 is my favorite game still to this day, hope MGS3 is just as good. Don't quit half-way through, this game rocks, keep at it!

I saw Fatman anyway. That's why I was getting the bombs.

Besides, Dark, the PS2 I have is all screwy and don't wanna send it in to Sony to get it repaired. Even if it's free.

MGS2 pales in comparision to MGS1, especially the GC remake. I can accept a slight supernatural edge to narratives, but MGS2 steps way over the line; it becomes an incoherent tale of ridiculous characters and plot devices.

Thankfully, MGS3 looks a hell of a lot better.

    MGS3 is gonna pwn. :D

But just for the sake of history, here is a Paragraph summary of each (major) metal gear game! Do not read these if you don't want some spoilers. Also its just a brief, brief summary; each storyline is much much MUCH more involved and not as silly as I make it sound in summary. MGS2's story, however, is stupid regardless of how many words you use. :P

<b>Metal Gear</b>. The year is 1999, the rookie Solid Snake is sent out on his first mission as a member of special forces unit Foxhound. His mission? Find and rescute Gray Fox, Foxhound's super elite soldier guy who went MIA on the same mission you were just sent on, and find out WTH Metal Gear is and destroy it. Metal Gear turns out to be a bipedal tank capable of launching a nuke. And the guy running the whole show? None other than Big Boss, the commander of Foxhound! So you, a rookie, destroy Metal Gear, beat the crap out of Big Boss and kill him then leave while the base explodes.

<b>Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake</b>. This one was never released on US soil, so I doubt any of you have played it. Anyways, a new armed nation called Zanzibarland arises in 2001 (or was it 2002?). There's a side story about some oil crisis, but it turns out that these new terrorist have a ... dum dum dum... a Metal Gear! Snake kills them all and destroys Metal Gear, again, but not before discovering that his old friend, Gray Fox, was actually an ally of Big Boss. They fight each other to the death in a minefield, Snake wins (obviously). Snake is about to leave when he runs into the commander of the terrorists who is.. dum dum dum... Big Boss. Not quite dead yet. Big Boss then reveals to Snake that he is actually his father (queue heavy breathing)! Snake fights and kills Big Boss and is a hero for another day.

<b>Metal Gear Solid</b>. Man oh man. The best game of the series by far. The year is 2005, and Foxhound has turned traitor and they hijack a Nuclear Warhead disposal facility in Alaska. It just so happens that Snake is also living in Alaska because he got Post Tramatic Stress disorder from killing his dad and all. So friendly Uncle Sam (actually, Colonel Campbell) convinces Snake to go and stop the terrorists. Snake learns there is a Metal Gear (suprise!) but this time it was built by the US Government. **** off that his own government is making the very thing he was always risking his life to destroy, he destroys Metal Gear, and stops the terrorists.

But there is a catch, you see the leader this time is his twin brother, Liquid Snake. Turns out Solid and Liquid were not just sons of big boss, they were actually CLONES of him. Analog cloning for sure (1970's technology) but still clones nonetheless. And Liquid was **** off at Snake because he felt he was inferior (and also he talked like a Ninja Turtle). Snake destroys Metal Gear, kills Liquid Snake, the end. Except that Revolver Ocelot got his hands on the plans for Metal Gear, and he sold them to every 3rd world country, terrorist group, and even corporations that he could.

FYI Metal Gear Solid 2 takes place in 2007 and 2009.

Its a nearly impenetrable (unless you're Solid Snake) walking Battle Tank, piloted by only 1 person, that can launch a nuke from anywhere on the planet, to hit anywhere else on the planet. Basically its a cold-war inspired (que MGS3) doomsday machine.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->2) Why is Snake working for a group opposed to Metal Gears?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Because Snake is your honest, hard working red blooded american who fights for the right thing, including stopping murdering terrorists & doomsday machines.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->3) Who were key people in MGS 1? I've run into/heard about the following:

Raven wasn't really important, he was just a cool boss character and the little figure from MGS2 was an attempt at humor/comic relief and also a homage for fans of the first game.

Revolver Ocelot was a member of Foxhound (who took over the base in Alaska), and is the only one who survived Solid Snake. He got his arm cut off, but that wasn't by Snake, that was by... Someone else. ;)

The GRU Kernel provided funding & equipment to Foxhound in Alaska because he thought he was going to buy Metal Gear from Liquid Snake (who was just using him of course, but he didn't know that). So when Snake came along and blew up Rex, he figured he'd just use the newest version, Metal Gear Ray (which is the one Snake goes after in the tanker in MGS2) instead.

Another key character you haven't asked about but are probably wondering about is Otacon, the elite hax0r friend of Snake's. He was the original designer of Metal Gear REX, but when he found out it wasn't for shooting down incoming missles, but was instead a nuclear equipped walking deathmobile, he vowed to help Snake destory as many Metal Gears as possible. Everyone in his family pees their pants whenever they meet Snake in a locker.

Hope this sums it up for you. BTW I'm the resident Metal Gear nut here, that's why I know all this crap just offhand. Ask if you have any more questions.

Well.. I'm starting to get over the disappointment of the character switch. Really, its quite solid gameplay. Gameplay wise, its tops in every category. Its just the storyline which they fubared, that is what upset people.

And now w/ The Twin Snakes, you get MGS2's terrific gameplay w/ MGS1's terrific story. Its a perfect union. :D

Excellent. That was exactly what I was looking for DOOMeh - thanks. I've dug up two more questions for you:

    1) Who/what is the la le lu li lo? (I think that's the right order of vowels...) The name has popped up a few times and I have no clue what it is.

    2) Why the hell did Konami(?) make Raiden such a whiny twit? I don't think anyone would have complained about not controlling Snake if Raiden didn't irritate the hell out of you at every turn =/.

    Spoilers:

GAH! I knew this but I can't be sure now. I think it may have been The Patriots. Also, remember the guard from MGS that has the cold and needs the toliet a lot (Johny)? He's in this game. While Ocelot is talking to Solidus in the hostage room pan your mic to the left and you'll hear Johny in the toliet. Dead funny. It sounds almost traumatic for him in the toliet. Then when he is about to come out "Damn, there's no paper left..." <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah, the la li lu le lo is an incredibly stupid nickname for the patriots.

I think they made Raiden whiney so that you would appreciate even more how awesome Snake is.

    I have a prediction for MGS4. (MGS2 spoiler below)

Liquid/Ocelot continues his full scale war against the patriots by building his own metal gear using the leftover Gurlukavich men, and a few good ol' fasioned mercenaries as guards, and tries to nuke New York, where the patriot's base is known to be (that's why Solidus was trying to make an EMP blast above NYC).

The patriots counter with their own Metal Gear, and an awesome Metal Gear VS Metal Gear battle ensues.

Vamp turns out to be alive, and also in actual fact a genetics experiment by the patriots, which explains all his superhuman powers (dear god let this one be true).

The game culmanates in Snake discovering that the patriots are in fact a big giant computer controlling the world, with the minds of the 8 people mentioned at the end of MGS2 linked to it forming a collective conciousness. Snake blows up patriots after boss battle with Liquid/Vamp/New character/Random Robot, and walks off into the sunset of a world finally free of the patriots... hurrah!

If i'm right, you all owe me caek and pai.

Normally I would say "no way, that's just too stupid" but after MGS2, yeah that's probably what it will be. Hopefully they just drop MGS2 and never mention it again.
