He's climbing the stairway to heaven...
This isn't a huge secret, but not a ton of people seem to be aware of them.
I didn't realize this until NS3.0, so I don't know if 1.04 mines (the ones with the frickin laser beams) could be stood on or not. But 3.0-beta mines can be placed anywhere, don't attract nearly as much attention as earlier versions, and most importantly, for some can reason support the weight of a marine.
So, with enough patience, enough suicides, and opponents who aren't too perceptive or nosy, you can eventually climb almost anywhere. But there's actually quite a bit of challenge, because 1) if FF is off, mistakes often can't be corrected, 2) unless you're really really extremely bored, you want your ladder to be semi-useful, and it takes creativity to find a useful spot, and 3) usually an extensive ladder will be noticed by the opposing team, and a really really extensive ladder won't be in place until onoses come, at which point they huff and puff and your ladder is gone.
Here's one example of what I think is a fairly useful mine ladder (requiring only one mine -- the best kind). Others I like can be found here, and instructions for practicing this on a bare server can be found here.

In my opinion, mine ladders are most useful for 1) getting places earlier than you'd be able to go with JP, often catching aliens completely by surprise, or 2) going places as HA that onoses can't reach. However, given that doing this costs 50% of a JP, and crawling HAs are about 20 times less meneuverable than a JP, it really is mostly a gimmick. But maybe an interesting gimmick anyway.

yes
And I thought it was hard to make the jump with a mine.
Sorry for kinda derailing your thread with the first post.
We got killed by skulks and gorges that just touched the mines.
Mine ladders are good to kill that last hiding gorge up the vent, sadly most mine ladders are just pathetic.
Mines are not good to get into vents but to place into them.
