Onos -- I Just Don't Get Them

My onos all die within seconds to HMGs
I have come to the conclusion that Onos are a waste of RPs. Let me give you some examples.

Example 1:

I do not recall the map name, but it is the map with all of the breakable glass, and with the Mess Hall located just past the human start (which also has breakable glass).

Our alien team had control of the Mess Hall (and the rest of the map). I was an Onos standing on top of the table in the Mess hall that is closest to door leading to the human base. We had 3 defensive chambers, 2 offensive chambers, and the Resource Tower in there. I had Level 3 Carapace, Level 3 Scent of Fear, and Level 3 Adrenaline.

The door was closed, and I was on the table facing it. About 3 steps away.

We hear the door beep, and it opens to reveal 1 Heavy + HMG, 1 marine + HMG, and 1 marine + LMG. They open fire on me (I'm right in front of them), and I click charge. There were no other humans nearby. No grenades. No turrets.

I was dead before I got through the door. Yep, they took me out in about 3 steps. I was shocked. And apparently they were too, as a couple of them apolgized and said that I was "ripped". I really wonder if there isn't a bug with the HMG sometimes. I have been insta-gibbed as a Fade also (not that they have much health, but one burst should not gib).

Example 2:

Getting insta-gibbed the first time did not deter me, so I grabbed another Onos. This time I chose the same upgrades, switching out Adrenaline for Celerity. Hopefully I would at least reach them with my speed before getting shredded like wet paper.

Another teammate went Onos and joined me. Again we entered the mess hall and waited for the door to open. It was the same Heavy Marine and a marine + LMG. My Onos buddy and I charged in (yes, I clicked charge) and killed the marine on the way to the heavy. Both of us were attacking the Heavy who emptied an entire clip into us. He then proceeded with the extremely long reload time on his HMG, and dumped another load into us. He killed me, and the other Onos had to run off. The heavy lived. We were both gorging him the entire time. He wasn't even strafing, just tanking us while shooting. And yes, I did switch from charge over to weapon 1.

Example 3
Another map, another day. My Onos (always have carapace) VS a Heavy + HMG. I lose.

Example 4
Again I do not know the map names. But I was an Onos going to attack the human base. There was a door that required a button to open. I walked up, pushed the button, and got stuck on the button. NOT the door, but the actual button. /kill

Then got stuck on the elevator. /kill

My teammate's Onos got stuck on the elevator. /kill

---

While I'm complaining, I don't see how Onos (if they can actually make it to the enemy base without getting stuck, insta-gibbed, etc.) can take out turret farms. Even with level 3 adrenaline and using Shout, I cannot kill more than 1 maybe 2 turrets before all of my energy is gone and I can no longer even attack using weapon 1. /shrug

So anyone have any ideas? Perhaps there is some strange technique that I am not getting. Like maybe you have to do twirls with your mouse to actually deal damage or something?

? No thanks. I'd rather have an un-upgraded skulk.

I found the best tactic to use the well is to first set up 3 defense chambers just outside their turret farm. Then turn into an , now just attack their turret farm and concentrate on one turret. Just gore it with your slot 1 attack, but make sure you primal scream before you attack the turret outpost, it boosts your stats a lot. Now once your health is down to 100-150 run back to the defense chambers and heal up, retreat also if you run out of stamina. The best upgrades I always used for this is Cloaking - Carapace - Adrenaline. It's also a smart idea to turn into the Onos close to their base, then you don't have to worry about getting stuck, just make sure you're well hidden when gestating.

As for dealing with HA Marines, gore them with your slot 1 attack, I found the charge to be completely useless since it drains your stamina so much. Also even though the Onos is a huge target run around in circles around the marine. Ducking I also found lands more hits.

It just takes a little practice to judge when to run away and heal up.

Another thing with an onos: if you're fighting only one person with an HMG: PARALYZE. Its the #2 attack, and it stops marines from shooting for 6 seconds. Makes them easy meat. I also prefer Gore over Charge as a better attack(Gore is #1). As for upgrades, Adren+Carapace+Cloak is probably the best for an onos. And using D chambers is a very good idea, it keeps you nice and healthy. I usually run away with about 200 life left, which should be fine unless you get stuck or have a bunch of HMG's after you. As for Onos being a waste of RP: They are not, unless you handle them badly. They work quite well in busting marine bases, and i've seen it happen often.

I've never had any problems using Onos (Hmm, what is the plural of Onos?). I've been able to take out 4-5 turrets by myself in one go using L3 Carapace, adrenaline, advanced hive sight. Just hit charge, run in, start goring. They fall down like they were made of toothpicks.

The problem attacking heavies is that the area where the Onos does damage with his main attack is not actually very big. You DO have to make sure hes in the center of the screen and you are right up next to him.

Onos are perfect killing machines with the right stratgey and and friends to back you up just because your a onos doesn't mean you can solo. I learned that the hard way but yeah Hmg troopers and lmg troopers can killing one onos very quickly. Also I thought there was not supposed to be any gibbing in this mod I mean you didn't want it to violent.

hey, sometimes i try to use the slot #2 attack (paralize) and nothing happes but the little ope thingies over my head shake around. i held te mouse down even. the marine was shooting and flying around like a weasel hanging from a helicopter. whas the problem here?

I have been able to paralyze a jetpacker out of the sky before. That is satisfying. He actually fell right on top on my head. I didn't realize they stopped shooting when paralyzed. I thought they just couldn't move. I'll have to try that out more.

Perhaps I'm just not aiming well enough to hurt these heavies with my Gore attack. Maybe I'll try aiming at their knees or something. Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually they DONT stop shooting - they just get so surprised, or this guy that you paralyzed had to reload just then.
Im pretty good with onos as a mega marauder rather than base assault... Defending is also fun though, since you can get healed easier then.
    !
Only once have I seriously tried to use paralyze, that was when a marine in light and HMG spotted me and started shooting. Then he thought better of it and tried to flee(hard to do at crawl speed), so i paralyzed him and BIT HIS 4$$!! YEAH BABY!
Oh I have to go now.
With the patch aliens seems to win all the time? Or maybe thats cause I usually play with lots of skilled alien players...

Well, I don't think Onos are meant to be complete tanks(the part where the marine had enough time to reload a HMG with both of you on him suggests you weren't using him effectively), I may be wrong though..

As to the plural form of Onos, I think it should be remain onos, so you look at the helper to determine whether it is plural or not.

I usually prefer using Fades, but if its late game and I have plenty of resources, I sometimes like to use a Onos as I do a fade. I use Lvl. 3 Cloaking and block up a whole hallway. When a group of stupid marines comes by, they get stuck on the invisible wall. Then its a cinch to take em all out and then retreat to defense chambers or somesuch. Using this strategy you can keep the Marines pretty bottled up without wasting the precious resources the Onos take.

In other news, It really appears to me that the Marines have had it soft and as such have developed half as quick as the dedicated Kharaa players. Now that were on even groun, the skill difference is becoming apparent.

You know how the plural of cactus is cacti? Maybe the plural of Onos is Oni?

ahaha, lol, I always thought the name was ono, and plural was onos

dunno, personally I seem unstoppable as a ono, just make sure a cluster of DCs are setup near where your gonna attack, and heal when you run low.

Even as a fade with 4 DCs I took out a small base (6+ turrets plus the same marine in armor and HMG defending it twice) You just gotta know when to run back to heal. Actually attacking with two(or more) onos isnt always a good idea, cause those fat **obscenity** get stuck and then

For me, Onos-using is fairly simple. IMHO Onos is mainly a distraction. While they are fun as crap to play if u have defence towers near your assault points, they are worthless any other way due to thier lack of range weapons.

Some of the most successful assaults use onos as a main rush while fades acid rocket and bilebomb, and Onos charge the infantary. Onos is good on a server with lots of people, but not quite so useful in a server w/ eight people. Onosing just takes time to get used to. Except for nowing when to retreat to a D-tower, you really do have to act like a rabid rhinoceros

As for the plural of Onos... A marine once said "Oh No!" as he saw an Onos attacking him. Then they were called Onos. His buddy turned around and said "Oh **obscenity**!" because he saw about 6 more. Therefore, Onos = singular. Oshit = plural. Hmmmm...

An onos is the ultimate anti-turret weapon in my opinion. Read the post in general discussion on the use of charge (onos #3 attack). If you follow those directions you'll find that you're able to just run right into the marine base, kill three turrets at once, and then walk out unscathed.

That would work if it was Latin. To me, Onos sounds Greek. But I don't know any Greek, so you'll need someone else to tell you the plural form of Onos. Wait! I have an idea...

According to a web translator, the masculine singular ending -os has the plural form -oi.

So I guess they are Onoi.

That was probably the most logical deduction of the Onos plural form. Congrats =P
Though I think Oni sounds cooler, and that's all that really counts

    Hah paralyze.

First time I used this was when I was guarding base. I was just standing at the opening with lvl 3 cloak, carapace and andrenaline. Marine walks up and bumps into the 'invisible' barrier (me). I move a little backward and unstealth. Marine stumbles back to flee and I switched to paralyze instead of charge and attacked. Just stood there while I leisurely gored him to death.

    From then on I've become a paralyze-addict... >=)
