What Happend And Can It Be Done?
Ive been working on dsome research and i was wondering how many people, actualy thought about the BioSphere project.

Also things about:

Why Did It Fail?
Can It Be Done?
What Kind Of Security Measures Would Be Required?
How Much Automation is Too Much Automation?
What If It Failed In Space?

What is the biosphere project? Sounds like one of these attempts to create an entirely secluded habitat under some sort of dome.

The BioSphere project failed because the farming sector had a pest infestation, and didn't produce enough food.

There Are 2 Biospheres on earth

    Biosphere 1 (earth)
Biosphere 2 (humans attempt that failed)

Biosphere 2 was converted to a CO2 study.

Another reason it failed is because the autmosphere destabalized and CO2 levels rised and O2 levels dropped

    Ok Currernt resons it failed

    "Pest" Problem in farming area
    CO2 & O2 Levels unstable

Now what else, why did these problems happen, how could they be prevented if we tried again.

I had herd that "permafrost" had somthing to do with the earths way of maintaining CO2 levels. But permafrost is only created during an ice age :-/

The biosphere project simply needs a way to stabilise atmospheric gasses and ensure that food production meets demand. Result? More area alotted for the project then what they originally alotted.

The pest problem could also easily be solved by screening the plants that go into biosphere 2 better.

It's been some relatively simple problems that hindered the biosphere projects and should require some relatively simple solutions.

If the atmospheric gasses problem cant be solved via plants and such then an automated measure has to kick in when the danger level is reached (or just prior). The automated measure should only be a stopgap technique until the problem is identified and fixed, rather then the be all and end all solution to atmospheric problems.

A little fleshed out info on why the Biosphere failed. The CO2 problem was because newly laid concrete emits Co2, or absorbs O2. I don't remember which one.

Not quite accurate. Permafrost is created whenever the environment never gets warm enough to melt below a certain depth. Permafrosts can occur anywhere that the temperature in the summer does not reach a certain point for a specific length of time.

That said, and ice age would certainly promote the formation of a permafrost.

It oxidizes and thus reduces the amount of free O2

Not sure if I am off topic here but the biosphere project did manage to produce some interesting artifacts such as http://www.ireallywantthat.com/ProductDeta...x?pid=55&cid=20

If that thing is not a hoax of some sort, it shows that it is possible to have a self substaining biosphere that requires no external interference. The problem lies in scaling it to fit and substain human beings.
