How To Use Onos's Charge To Kill Anything

It really does hurt buildings. A lot.
I'm only posting this because constantly people are saying "Don't use charge, it doesn't hurt buildings'.

Actually it does. Faster than anything else I've ever seen in the game. Especially if combined with its primary attack.

In fact, with the new patch, a charging onos can rush into the marine spawn, dash right at the turret factory (usualy theres only one) and kill it within a second, deactivating all turrets in the room.

So how do you kill buildings with Charge?

* Charge is not a skill you hold down or press multiple times to use! To use Charge, press it ONCE. Charge is now active. Your energy will start counting down. As long as its counting down you will have Charge active. When it gets to zero, charge ends. HOLDING IT DOWN WILL CAUSE IT TO USE UP ALL YOUR ENERGY FOR NOTHING.

* While you're in charge mode you run faster, and most importantly, anything you touch will take damage.

Heres the part people who say it doesn't hurt buildings just don't seem to realise: It only damages things you are CONSTANTLY running up against.

So to use charge against a turret for example, activate it (click once) then hold down your MOVE FORWARD button (w or whatever you usualy use to run forward.) Point directly at the turret. You will hit it, at this point do NOT let go of your run forward key. Keep holding your run forward key down so your Onos 'grinds up against' the turret. This is what people don't seem to get. You only damage things you are CONSTANTLY pushing at. So don't let go your forward key. Keep it held down and constantly 'rub up against' the turret. It will most likely die in under a second. If you want to be even more dangerous, start usuing your primary attack at the same time for insane amounts of death.

So in summary, never hold charge down, it ends when your energy does (wait and activate it again), and while its active, rub up against anything that needs to die... and keep rubbing (dont let go of forward).

Good luck

Charge is amazingly powerful, because it does 14 damage a 'touch', and a touch is each time HL runs through it's main loop to check for any collisions, so it does MASSIVE damage, however it doesn't do crap unless your pushing against the object.

Does it cancel if you turn? The description in the manual states that the Onos can only go in a straight line. So if you turned 90 degrees to attack something else, does the charge end?

No, nothing seems to end the charge except for your energy running out

Yeah, the description IS decieving. When you activate charge YOU JUST SIT THERE doing nothing, which really confused me the first time i used it. I expected to go flying off in the direction i was pointed with no control of the Onos. Truth is, you can turn, stop (although stopping = no damage), run backwards (Hmmmm, wonder if you can charge with your rear and still do damage?), whatever. If you actually want to get something useful out of charge though, hit it right as you turn the corner and start coming under fire, and keep running into things.

Hmm, sounds like the manual needs to be redone. The blink description is wrong too.

    charge doesn't hurt buildings.

Necro- : This was tried and tested in a controlled environment and it works as I say it does.

If its not SUPPOSED to hurt buildings, then its a bug, because it most certainly does. Fast.

I'm pretty sure hurting buildings with charge IS NOT a bug.

it most definately does, keep the head pointed down too, that helps, maybe nod up and down against a building to give it that extra nudge

Has anyone else noticed a scary 'ownage' by alien players since the patch? Most humans admit defeat as soon as they see an Onos now.

Really? In most of the games I've played (been playing as alien since NS came out) the appearance of an Onos usually causes a large amount of ordnance to be thrown to that side of the room rather than an admission of defeat

Again, another reason why I think FF should be "always on" for grenades & mines.

Thanks Vektuz, good description of the skill! This is one of my pet peeves, while I enjoyed reading through the manual very much, it doesn't seem to have practical instructions for actually performing things like this. I had no idea how charge worked up until now, and I had tried it. Another thing that I was curious about was with a commander, does he have the option to go automatically to the last person to ask for ammo, or call for backup or "events" like that (ala starcraft spacebar)? And what about asking for healing with an alien, is there a symbol that shows up over me or is the healer supposed to recognize the sounds that I make?
I'm sure theres other features that I have yet to figure out, but thats all I can think of now.

That's exactly what it used to be like pre-patch with the humans grenades. "Damn grenades, game over".

Straight after the patch I noticed that aliens were winning almost all the time but I think that was due to the humans pre-patch reliance on mass sgs (err turrets) and gren launchers/hmg. Plus the aliens had a far rougher time so they had to get everything right to have any chance in winning, making them better players.

After a few hours they started getting closer to winning. Now it's a pretty even match.

great tips! i took out an entire marine base almost single-handedly! I must have killed 5 turrets and a prototype lab my first charge, i went out and waited for my energy to go back up then charged in again, got 3 more turrets and a TF. God i love onos

    amen
    <--------

remember if u run in, make lots of noise and thrash around, run straight for the marines for a bit, then a lot of them run off if they can, sweet

    Great tips!

The reason marines are getting their limbs handed to them is because they're used to doing just the opposite. Did anyone else notice a trend where aliens started doing better and better pre-patch? I did. I think alien players were just getting better and better, and now that balance is no longer in marine favor, they're getting what aliens got. Give it a week, and some great games will start popping up.

Was this added in the new patch ?

It had never worked for me so after reading this I ran a lan game and tested it ... and nothing.
Desperation took over me and I was about to go pyro on this board but downloaded the server patch first, tested again and WOW, it works now!

It was always working but they may have made it a bit more usable in the patch (I don't know).

Another tip: One of the BEST things to take out as an ONOS rushing the enemy base is thier turret factory. Because doing so turns off all their turrets.

So activate primal scream. Wait for energy to fully regen (it regens a lot faster), run into their base and hit charge as you see the turret factory. Then charge it to pieces while attacking it normally as well. It dies in about 2 seconds and all turrets stop, theres no way those turrets can kill you before you destroy their turret factory, and most of the time, marines only build one turret factory at base

After that, you're free to kill all the marines, and after that, all their spawns, etc, at your leisure. I often keep one marine spawn open and kill anyone who appears, while I destroy the base. Just because.

Sounds like some good information. I tryed useing Onos b4 but couldn't really get a hang of the big guy, so I've been sticking to Fade or Skulk. I'm gona have to try charge again.

I agree, things are evening out now. Before the aliens would only win one of four rounds, the patch came out and it reversed, but now it's about half and half. ONly suggestion is increase the fireing rate of alien turrets again, not to the rate of marine turrets, but a little more.
