The Ways Of Winning

<div class="IPBDescription">How to win at NS</div> This is just a simple guide on what you usually have to do to win in a game of NS

As Marines:

Resources are the key. If your commander doesn't have any resources to build or upgrade your weapons/armor then the aliens will eventully dominate you. Once your team starts putting out Heavy Machine Guns and Heavy Armor you will have a huge advantage.

Defend the hive locations, the aliens NEED these hives to win the game. It is an easy win if your team has HMGs and Heavy Armor and the aliens only have one hive. There is always a resource point right near the hive locations so you can put a resource base there and get the added effect of guarding a hive location.

So pretty much, expand resource bases and secure hive locations to win.

As Aliens:

DESTROY the Marines resource expansions and put hives up FAST.

Destroying the marines resource bases will make sure they don't have enough to start pumping out heavy armor and HMGs, once they have these out the game gets a lot tougher for you. Don't go at these bases alone, always call in for team support, parasite the players/buildings to show your team where you are at. If you can keep their resources down they will be hurting a lot.

For the hives, you should really ask your team who is saving up for the hives. You absoultely need the hives up to win, once you get that third hive and people turn into onos you can win the game pretty easy most the time. There also needs to be someone who goes around to the hives to make sure they're cleaned out and not defended, its a pain to find out your last hive has 8 sentry cannons and 3 marines guarding it. Keep the hive locations cleared out.

Also, for a quick win a lot of the time you can have your team rush the marines base before its up. Just get there before they have sentry cannons up, destroy their teleport pads and then the commanders console.

General Gameplay Tips:
WORK AS A TEAM!!!!!!!
WORK AS A TEAM!!!!!!!
WORK AS A TEAM!!!!!!!
WORK AS A TEAM!!!!!!!
As a marine you will lose without working as a team, four marines can secure a resource node a lot faster then one marine.

When playing alien you must work as a team (as stated above) to win. If you see a structure being attacked, get there and defend it. Aliens offense towers are worthless against determined marines. WORTHLESS. As stated else where, they are mere speed bumps intended to slow the marines down until YOU can get there and take the marines out.

Also as a marine you need to use the voice commands when asking for ammo/health. This lets the commander know exactly where you are and then he can just press the spacebar to get to you instantly. Its annoying having someone ask for ammo and then not tell where, just use the voice commands.

Another alien tip that most people do not know is that you can build any upgrade structure with one hive. You just can't build another until you have a second hive. What I mean by this is if you have one hive you can choose to put down defense towers, movement towers, or sensory towers. I suggest going defense towers first, movement towers second (for quick access to the hives and adrenaline & clerity) and finally sensory towers at the third hive.

Well I hope this helps some of the newer people out, this game is balanced unless your team allows the marines to have everything they need to win.

    all is well and good until marines get siege turrets. Those things demolish every building in sight and i hardly see how it is fair. Something needs to be done to those things to make them less godly. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo-->

Prince257 seige cannons are powerful, but easy to take down as they dont target the players, just buildings.

Well siege turrents aren't put up in an instant. They have to build a turrent factory, then upgrade the turrent factory to putut siege turrents. You have time to destroy them before they can have em built. Just ask for your team to help you destroy them or else your going to lose a hive/resource base.
Just parasite the turrent factory so your teammates know where its at.

I suggest swapping movement and sensory chambers around, going defense, sensory and then movement. Although surely no method could be called wrong. I just think the 2nd hive aliens (fades) would benefit more from cloaking than any movement upgrade.

I feel that being able to choose adrenaline or clerity depending on what you play is nice. I don't think being able to cloak helps offense wise vs marine bases so thats why I didn't suggest sensory chambers first. Also movement chambers around your hive can help you defend it by getting players there quicker.
    But its all up to your team <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I also tend to put up sensory chambers second for cloaking, but one of the biggest problems is knowing how visible you are... sure you turn translucent when you're cloaked, but it's hard to tell without seeing it often (and if they're cloaking well you won't see them) just how well you can be seen.

Regarding siege turrets, yes you need to upgrade to get them, but normally the marines will put down a turret factory and then quickly get two sentry turrets in place. Unless you have ~2 fades tossing bile bombs or some support from umbra you're likely to get decimated trying to take even one turret down. The marines keep you at bay and they get time to build up to a siege turret and kill you.

I've won on an alien team, but at the moment (I'm assuming we'll start getting better and with the upcoming resource balancing) unless the marines are largely incompetent the aliens have it very, very hard.

Klink- That's a good point about quick access to hives that are threatened. Now if only more players would feel up to defending them. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Belgand- Your level of cloaking depends on it's level of upgrade. The level of upgrade = # of sensory chambers active. You can tell which level you have by how many little black alien icons you have at the middle right hand of the screen.

Level 1 cloak- You are translucent camo'ed.
Level 2 cloak- Your outline can be seen.
    Level 3 cloak- Complete invisibility.

Just kill the turret factory now to take out the surrounding siege turrets, it's a new change in the patch..

Another way for aliens to win is a instant rush. This was what won the game for us in the pre-patch days. If you're lucky they'll have no respawns buildings. More than likely they'll have one and it'll slow their progress a fair bit.

They usually only fall for it once though...

Edit: Just re-read the original post and noticed it was already said.

One problem I've noticed....well maybe not problem....is when the marines set up a siege turret near a hive or a bunch of alien structures. If there are a lot of structures, that turret will be blasting for a while, and it sure seemed to me like I had no way of getting near the turret while it was blasting. The moment I walked into that blast radius I just went splat. If anything, marines can use this as a tool, and aliens need to learn the maps well enough to not let this happen.
