Countering Skulks

using a trailer
Ive found a good tactic to counter skulks is to have a marine "trail" the main group. In most cases, a skulk can run circles around the group of marines chomping away and the marines can only turn and get a glimpse of him. Lately when we are moving to a spot, i trail the group and when a skulk bounces us i have a clean and open shot at it. Having a trailer also helps with those surprise attacks from the rear because then those cloaked fades can only get one instead of hurting the whole group before being found.

This sounds good. Marines need to remember that ambushing and other tactics are not exclusive to aliens. Most marines I see stand out in the open and make themselves targets. It could be beneficial to wait around a corner and ambush an alien rather than let him see you and rush you. That is a neg if you're parasited.

Unfortunately waiting around a corner takes away the marines biggest advantage: Range.

Yes, if you peek around the corner and see a helpless litle skulk standing there or doing sumthing and he is a distance away you have the advantage and if you a good shot (or lucky) the most he can do is parasite you (wich could be bad depending where you are in the game)

The problem is the guy covering your **obscenity** is kind of screwed if he gets rushed from behind.

If you hear your trailer die, you can whip around and blast the skulk. He just takes one for the team.

To a degree I agree Tabris, but I've found that crouching in the dark as a marine when you hear a nearby alien and the blasting them as they walk past can actually work very well.. The aliens never expect to be ambushed

Funny thing...sometimes us aliens use "bait" see that trailer guy? well while you're shooting the one skulk the other 2 are chomping your ankles to death.

yeah not so sure about this "trailer" idea. It makes sense in theory, but in practice a skulk would just take him out and run. It certainly happens to me when I trail behind the group by accident.

When you're in your base, hop on top of your buildings if you're on anti-rush duty.
It's harder for them to jump up there and kill you then it is for them to eat the meatpops on the ground.

Definately. Nothing worse than being an Onos in the middle of the base and there's one marine with a HMG sitting on the ammo dispenser going pop pop pop and i can't do diddly.

Yep.. got driven off twice as an Onos today because the marines guarding the outpost I was attacking did that.. it's a smart move really.

I love deliberately having no ammo in the clip and getting it back instantly with the ammo dispenser to pump another 400 rounds into an onos

Now why didn't I think of that?

great idea, but dont forget cloak... The guy could stand there and everyone walks by him, even the trailer.
  • guagleguagle Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7312Members
And don't forget silence either, or your trailer will get eaten and nobody will turn around.

Silence and Celerity also come into play, as a Marine I depend primarily on my ears instead of my eyes to hear incoming aliens. You'll often hear the tap tapping of a Skulk moving into position and a decent Marine player will always warn his squad over voicecom that there's an alien nearby. Silence puts a huge damper on this and lowers Marine effectiveness by more than most people would think. Celerity at its highest level will blaze through Marine lines like a rabbit on crack, with high speed as a Skulk, Marines may hear your coming but if they can't hit you.

Typically when I play I take point and enter rooms first, always making sure everyone isn't trying to squeeze in through the doorway at once (which could mean death for the entire squad). Taking one for the team is fine by me, so long as my team makes the offending alien take one for theirs. Range is a luxury at most times since Skulks ambush you left and right, when you don't have that option, I usually switch to pistol and blast the alien in close quarters. Unfortunately, the pistol seems so very underestimated. It has great accuracy and damage, the fire rate can be easily controlled as well, enabling ammunition conservatives to be able to direct precise shots. Takes out Skulks faster than you think..

I, too run like a sissy sometimes.
