of the free and efficient sort
I believe zone alarm is seriously effecting my computer in a very negative fashion and I was curious as to who uses what and why, please only post if you are able to describe why it is good and perhaps a list of pros and cons.

If you really need to use one, the firewall that's built-in in Windows XP is quite good. No setup required, and it's powerful enough for the average user (stops all sorts of Worms and Trojans).

Well, let's see. When I had ZoneAlarm installed whenever I did any kind of file transfer, it killed my internet connection until I rebooted.

That's a start.

smoothwall linux ftw

more (mostly free) linux based firewalls *click*

note that these will turn a box into a firewall, so don't try to install them on your promary box (and yes, they are win32/64 compatible)
go to some computer graveyard, pick up a 486 or higher with two free pci slots and grab two nic cards while you're at it. connect, install, kaboom

I'm with Wizard. I like it (more or less) and it came somewhat highly recommended.

As with any firewall, the important thing is that you learn how the darn thing works first.

Nothing will cause you more annoyance than an 'out-of-the-box' firewall. These are things that need to be custom tailored for your needs. Unless you want to block everything, eventually your default configuration will block something you need and often at a time when you are trying to remote connect to your box to retreive a mission critical file.

I like Kerio because I was able to fit it to my needs as accurately as possible. One thing I suggest you do is take an inventory of every program you want to be able to access the internet before you install the firewall, this will help you down the line when process ert32b.exe is trying to access the internet and you have no idea what the heck it is. You can look at your list and go: Hey, thats my earth rescue team beta game (Allowed).

It will save you a big headache if you take the time at the beginning to define your permissions. It will also help stop those warning messages from poping up ingame while you are trying to take aim on an enemy sniper.

I've always wondered, why doesn't anyone use or even mention the WinDoze XP built-in firewall?

The windows firewall works quite well. It just isn't my favorite. Not sure why. I like hazelnut icecream. Not sure why.

Personal preference.

So I assume buying a router is out of the question.

1. Do not bother with Windows XP's firewall.
2. The problem you are having with ZoneAlarm has yet to happen with my computer; it is more than likely a configuration issue or simply user error of some sort. I will Google a bit to see if I can find an answer.

Edited a bit.

Question: I have a Linksys wireless router sitting there, routing my intor-net. Do I still need my firewall? I like extra protection, but if it's overkill..

How about some justification?
• MedHeadMedHead Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11115Members, Constellation
Well, for a biased opinion, Microsoft hasn't been the greatest with security. In terms of practical use, it does not block outgoing communication. I have not confirmed it, but I have also read that computers behind the XP firewall are not in stealth mode.
• CreepieCreepie Join Date: 2003-02-19 Member: 13734Members
Hmm - I haven't had any problems with ZoneAlarm in my years of using it. Not that that's much help. Maybe Medhead's search will reveal the reason behind these mysterious file transfer problems.
• MedHeadMedHead Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11115Members, Constellation
Couldn't find much. Do you have a Linksys modem?

^^Note Jammer's response, found it interesting, might be what causes ZoneAlarm to cut a connection?
• littlewildlittlewild Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9467Members
I don't see what's wrong with using the XP's built-in fire wall. So what if it is not in stealth mode? Port scanners like nmap will only tell you that no open ports are found. It doesn't really matter if it is stealth or not. Any way, what are the chances of some one running nmap against you in the first place?

I suppose most people install a firewall because they don't want to be hit by worms that propagate through the net. Xp's built-in firewall does that just as well as Kerio, tiny or Sygate.

IMHO, what people really need are proper surfing/download habits and not something that can be installed out-of-the box and protects the computer from all known evil.
• MedHeadMedHead Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11115Members, Constellation
You missed the other part of my complaint - XP's firewall does not block outgoing communication. For some, it might not be important, but it's a must for me.
• BryBry Join Date: 2003-01-23 Member: 12609Members
personally i generally prefere built in option as it always seems to work faster and generally betetr than outside programs.
But built in windows xp firewall is
a)hard to configure
b)doesnt block outgoing connections

both points im glad to say according to screenshots and previews havbe been fixed in windows xp service pack 2. So which ever option you go for i suggest u take a serious look at windows firewall when service pack 2 is out.
Its what i will be doing
