Since we here at planetDOOM dislike rumours in all shapes and sizes, we went straight to the horses mouth so to speak and asked Activision themselves. The reply we got was that it is confirmed and indeed true that DOOM 3 will only run on Windows machines that have windows 2000 or XP and not lower.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Not that big of an issue anyway, as if you have a PC fast enough to run DOOM 3 even at the min specs WinXP is actually faster than win98, but I know how some people like to cling to the old way of things.

(For those that are wondering, yes ME is included w/ 98 and 95 in the not working category)

Anyone that is still using ME, probably can't play games because of all the OS bugs, driver problems and BSoD, so like they could anyways.. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Like this would be a problem anyways, most game players I know of either play on XP, 2k or some version of LINUX.

i don't want to sound cynical, but this may just be the thing that pushes people to get rid of win9x (or at least dual-boot).

People still use ME? I didn't know you <i>COULD</i> use ME. Last comp I used where it had ME I managed to start word before it crashed. Barely.

ME never worked, and XP is a ram ****. 512 is a must. 2000 however isn't bloated, must be why I use it...

But then again, you can also change how much RAM windows takes, not to mention 512 of ram is cheap anyway. Not to mention that given the CPU and GPU buffs it includes(and that longhorn will expand on), its great.

i work in PC repair, and i see people every single day who still use winME. they dont know any better, and dont comprehend the reason they should shell out 129$ for a retail liscence of winXP.

Meh, I do have Win Xp, but will my PC run it...

    AMD2400+ @ 1991 Mhz/2Ghz
    512 MB SD RAM
    GF4Ti4200 64 MB

I personally think that I first need a better GFX card (a Radeon 9800 Pro or better)
and perhaps I should double my RAM to 1024 MB...

Doom 3 might work (slowly) with Virtual PC or similar emulators? However, I do doubt it.

Get a Gefore not a ATI card for Doom3

Is there any system specs for Doom3 yet?
    Atm im running on
    Athlon 64bit 3200
    512Ram
    Radeon 9800Pro 128Meg
So im fine for HL2 but I have read that you will be better of with a 256meg Gfx card for Doom3

To run on Ultra High visual settings, DOOM3 <i>requires</i> a <i>512MB</i> Video card, so even an X800XTPE couldn't run it.

1024MB ram helps, but i got 1024 RDRam, but hey, at least it's not SDRam

Zaggy, you <i>will</i> need to upgrade that GFX card.

    From Hollenshead's .plan:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->A few people have reminded me of some details omitted from my initial update:

Mac and Linux: Unfortunately I don't have dates for either of these. However, Linux binaries will be
available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves. There are no plans for boxed Linux games.
More remains to be done for the OSX version of DOOM 3 and that will take some time. We won't release
the OSX version until it's just as polished as the PC version. The date for OSX DOOM 3 remains "when it's
done", but I can confirm that it's definitely coming.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

1gig of ram is almost required to run any new game at good speeds and quality so the xp takes to much ram argument is mute. We are coming to the point where you can't slide by with crap hardware by setting things really low and such, the line is being raised and everyone is going to have to upgrade.

sorry Nem0, i was pretty sure the first ten letters would be useless to anyonewho doesnt know about it, while still being clear to those of us who already know; i was wrong.

anyway, ive switched to win2k down from xp because i had put on service pack 2 beta and it was so buggy, caused a few bluescreens a day. couldnt figure out how to uninstall it cleanly, so we're back to a stable OS.
