Not a good idea. We did a case study of a guy that deprived himself of sleep for 7 days for charity. The psychologists came in and helped him stay awake as well as studying the effects.
After about 3 days or so the hallucinations started up. He saw spiders and such crawling in and out of his shoes etc, his body temperature dropped every single day. Concentration on simple things (walking, paying attention etc) went haywire but concentration on complex tasks, such as his job (radio) was fine.
When he finally slept he did so for 20 hours, and woke up otherwise perfectly fine.
However...
His marriage broke down a few years later. He lost his job. He was different after the period of sleep deprivation as well, more aggressive and meaner then his former outgoing self. He fell into alcoholism etc.
This is all based from memory from about a year ago so I'll see if I can find some hard information.
My personal advice, if your going to deprive yourself of sleep dont do it for more then 5 days maximum unless you want subtle, permanent effects.
I believe one Randy Gardner stayed awake for just under 11 days in 1965. He didn't die, he didn't hallucinate, when he was playing pinball against one of the researchers, he won every game, and he slept for some 14 hours when he decided enough was enough.
I've heard that in one of the following military institutions (Marines, the Army, the Navy SEALs) sleep deprivation is one of the facets of "hell week". Is it true?
However, studies show that once the individual is able to catch up on some lost sleep (and resynchronise the biological clock), the effects of sleep deprivation tend to dissapear. In one documented case of prolonged sleep deprivation, 17 year old American student Randy Gardner stayed awake for a world record of 264 consecutive hours (11 straight days) as part of a high school science project. It was found that Gardner experienced no significant psychological or physical effects from his sleep loss. When it was over, Gardner held a news conference, during which he announced that "it's just mind over matter". He then slept for 15 hours, woke up feeling fine and resumed his usual daily routine of activity. Follow up tests confirmed that Gardner has suffered no long term harmful effects (Dement, 1978).
[snip]
Nevertheless, many people experience some temporary emotional and behavioural effects, such as irrationality and slower reaction times. Some people experience significant and disturbing effects of prolonged sleep deprivation, such as hallucinations (perceptions of stimuli which are not really there) and delusions (false beliefs that are obviously incorrect to others). For example, in 1959, an American disc jockey called Tripp remained awake for eight consecutive days to raise money for charity. After about the first 100 hours he started to experience sever psychological disturbances. He began to hallucinate, seeing cobwebs in his shoes. He also had difficulty thinking clearly and remembering things. Towards the end of this time, he became paranoid, believing people were out to 'get' him (Dement, 1972). After Tripp was escorted home following 201 hours of sleep, he slept continiuously for 13 hours. When he awakened, his thinking, memory and perceptions were normal, and his mood was back to the playful level that was charecteristic of him (Coren, 1996).
Although my text book does not mention any long term effects sufferd by Tripp, the video documentary we watched included a wealth of information which exposited on the effects as well as those people with Fatal Familial Insomnia and various other sleeping disorders.

As they said , sleep deprivation can result in your death. But if you decide to not sleep for a while , at least make sure you eat and drink enough. Lack of sleep combined with starvation is horribly painful , and probably causes brain damage.
I've pulled off around 40 hours of being awake.

If you want to stay up, scare the hell out of yourself somehow. I have no doubt that Doom 3 will keep you up for a while, if not by scaring you than by keeping you awake to play it. Of course Doom 3 PLUS the trippy effects of sleep deprivation will make for some very, very strange happenings/illusions.

I used to take little naps when the instructors were distracted at the rifle range. While they were observing the shooter, they paid no attention to the rest of us. I liked to crawl under a shooting bench and grab 7-10 mins of sleep.
Though, I guess it goes to show how sleep deprived we were if I was able to sleep on a shooting range with automatic weapons fire going on.

I've had two long periods of wakefulness. The longest was 5 days... I was travelling around a lot as we were going on holiday to america and I was super mega hyped (and about 8 years old to boot =3 ). It all ended somewhere in the 5th day as my world went black and I fell facefirst into a bowl of cereal I was eating ^^;
Second longest was just under 4 days... I went on a huuuuge PSO binge. I lost consciousness in the middle of a conversation and woke up groggily half an hour later. I logged back on, apologized profusely and crawled into bed to sleep for a whole day and a half; totally unconscious =s
Sooooo my record is roughly 108 hours or something like that =D

Bah, I stay up for 38-40 hour days consistently. At school-back in High School, at least, I would go 20 awake 4 asleep consistently (basically all the time - all the good TV happens at 2am...and then you wake up at 6 ). College doesn't really hold this problem - since all of my selected classes generally happen later than 10am (so: woot, college).
After staying up for a long period of time my mind generally works a bit slower - but is still very sharp. It's just like living at half speed or so . Still plenty of energy - I've laid a sidewalk in high 80 temperatures after being awake for 30 hours. I kinda fell asleep when I got home, but was good for the whole work period. My eyes are the only part of me that feels distinctly tired, and splashing my face with water would get rid of that for a bit.
As much in psychology does, the statistics are not consistent and results of various tests will differ from person to person (one of the reasons many 'higher' sciences like Physics and Chemistry don't consider Psychology a real science). There are no 2 human brains exactly alike, so different stimuli will affect everyone differently.
I say go for it - but go to sleep if you feel exceptionally weird. I've never hallucinated (even under the effects of morphine) so I can't say what that would be like - but if you start hallucinating, I'm going to suggest going to sleep. Along with: experiencing seizures; having hunger pangs (even after eating), being thirsty (after drinking water routinely), having severe unprovoked pains, suffering delusions (of grandeur! ....BAM! ) or anything else that makes you think you should probably go to sleep (aside from being tired).
