So, I've Been Playing Doom3...

Yes, this pertains to NS
One of the things I was very impressed with with Doom 3 is something that I've been missing from every other fps game I've played that I always thought was very important, yet always lacking. This thing is knowing when you're hit. In Doom3, the screen shakes, or in some cases just jumps, you hear loud noises, appropraite sprites flash over your screen, etc. You know when you're hit. In just about every other fps game I've played, including every HL game, including NS, the only really way is watching your damage counter, or maybe you'll get those red things in the middle of the screen. It's just so un-clear as to wheather your taking damage or not, while in Doom, you will always know when you're hit. This has always bugged me about every game I've played, and I've always thought about this problem, but never really bitched about it, cause I guess I'd aways forget shortly after I think of it.
Anyhow, NS needs a sytem so that you will always know when you're taking damage-- it adds so much more to the feel of the game, it really does. You know exactly when you're taking damage, and often to the extent, it greatly improves immersion.
Oh, and I know this isn't possible due to engine limitations, but you should just see the infestation they have. Oh, my, god, it's amazing, and would have been perfect in NS.

I just beat doom 3 and I can definately say it was worth the wait.
Thanks, but no thanks.
Only because of gamma correction [boosting abilities of your monitor, game, AND map] and a crappy flashlight, yes.
Otherwise, DooM 3 lighting all the way... in the alien infested parts, anyways...
omg its teh BUS!

wheres fecal when you need him
Hit in doom3 = screen spins wildly, goes bright red, blood splatter effects all over... just NO. You REALLY want that in NS? One bite with any level of armor and it would be all over, because you'd never be able to aim at anything with your screen doing loop-de-loops. One shot from any marine gun and there goes your ambush, because now you're facing the wrong direction. The HL engine does, in face, have the ability to do the screen jar effect when you're hit (the big zombies from opposing force caused it whenever they hit you) but putting it in multiplayer games would be terrible. It only works in single player when the enemies are AI that are programmed to give you a chance to survive, because it wouldn't be any fun otherwise. In multiplayer, the first person to get a hit in would always win every fight. Might as well just give NS an instagib mode. (turn both team damages to 1000 percent if you'd like to see how well that would work in NS )
And NS does have indicators that you're being damaged. Light sprites on the screen that don't obscure vision, but that are visible if you look for them, and noises that everything makes when they're hit. The noises even have varying levels depending on how much damage you took. NS has all the cues you need and they're handled quite well, there's no reason to go messing with that.

It has this. Its called "Big red arrows in the middle of your screen when you get hit."
So when you are normally walking one direction and all of the sudden are shoved to another, that may be an indication something has happened to you!
Doom 3's method of giving your character whiplash every time somebody hits him is better for atmosphere than it is for gameplay. It definitely increases the shock value of being damaged, and that's what Doom 3 is all about. However, it's REALLY annoying and for any game that isn't supposed to be a survival horror, it's way overboard. Doom 3 prioritizes atmosphere over gameplay. Most games don't. That's why your view going nuts when something smacks you works out alright for Doom 3, but would be awful in a regular game.
Heh, yay, NS on a better engine!
Nooooo, I have to spend money...
*bows to flayra* You sir, are GOD ON EARTH!
/bows to Flayra and offers goat sacrifices!
Oh, ahem, back to the thread. I think NS already has a dmg system, it's called: blood, a red flash, and a knock-around.
But, since so many people say that the reason Flayra doesn't post on the forums that often is because people always talk about it in the next 10 posts, I'm not going to spazz.
2 aliens vs 1 commander + 1 marine WOOT!
I thought you were the mod leader?
Anyway, seeing NS on a new engine will seem nice, but it'll dwindle the fanbase.
So for the time being, no for some new damage system or moving to a new engine. I quite like the fanbase as it is now honestly. Only needs a bit of cleaning and refining.
Besides, we'd have to spend money on the new game for the mod
Of course, that won't stop you from making NS2 on some new engine right Flay?
Really though, that would make NS alot cooler, to have pitch black areas of bases/ships/whatever. Not exactly though, going through the dark FOREVER in doom gets old REALLY quick. Having areas that are dark as such would allow skulks to ambush easier and balance things out. Obviously this will probably never happen with HL NS... but we can only hope for the future .
Look at your health and armor. If those are doing down, you are most likely taking flak from an enemy.

Doom 3 is perfectly capable of supporting large numbers of players, the 4 player limit is for standard doom3 deathmatches only.

Flayra speaks, now gaze in wonder as this thread gets three thousand replies in the space of an hour!
