Plantronics Audio. series is really nice, surround sound headphones with volume control and a mic mute button on them, I have the .50 Audio model, nice traditional looking headphones. Good earpieces, and confortable for the most part, might get irratating if you wear glasses after a bit. Durable too.
Sienser's (spelling) make incredible headphones, they sound a lot better then Plantronics, but are much more expensive.
Someone might elaborate on the comparisons of these two companies headsets, my guess is Siens. headsets are better because they use higher quality parts to make them.
Suround sound, is, and probably always will be, a waste in headphones. But that's just my opinion, as I have never actualy tried it.
I would go for a cheap ish headset; sub £10. As long as it has a sensible adjustable mike, and chunky headphones, you're sorted.
Why spend £30 on a uber-deluex model when you're only going to use it for gaming? It's not like you need high quality anyway if you only use the HL speach facilities.
eBay has "Trust" mikes going for a few quid with only 20 mins remaining. Go bid. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I use a pair of sennheiser HD447 headphones an they are excellent i just always go for sennheiser really because of their name <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
For a little something different: Creative has a good headphone model HS-300 comes with like 4m long cord, the quality of the mic is crystal clear and the sounds have some oomph in them.. plus they cover your ears nicely thanks to the muffy, soft ear pieces. But they are also neck band so it's a pretty :O for some <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Well, of course it's very different to people I understand that. Im very comfortable with neck band system as I've used them for couple of years now <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> The user must not have a huge head though as the frame isn't adjustable!
And defiance: that last line was unneeded, it's not like you made a personal insult again st me <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Headphones sound GREAT with full on 5.1 surround. Absolutely amazing indeed.
But as for a headset? I have no idea. I haven't been able to find even just 1 of a 5.1 surround headset, and I've been looking for months. You'd think SOMEONE would make 'em.
Sennheiser and Altec Lansing both make excellent headphones. I have <a href='http://www.altec-lansing.com/product_details.asp?pID=AHS502' target='_blank'>these (AHS502)</a> from A-L, and they haven't caused me any trouble over the last 9 months I've had it, plus the sound/mic quality is very good.
If you want the incredible-but-ludicrously-expensive type, go with Bose (good sound cancellation for once).
Plantronics are really crap. They break really easily, I've gone through like 3 of them. Get the Altec Lansing, its a very high quality headset, and very good.

The $20 Logitec ones I used to have broke a wire in an important place. About a thin a wire as can be. If you're rough on your electronics like I am (pile of gadgets disease), I wouldn't bother, or you'll be buying another one in a few months.

I used to use plantronics, but they would break every 4-6 months. Had this for about 8 months now. No complaints whatsoever. Sound and Mic quality is very good
Actually, if you read the reviews that aren't linked on Zalmans website I found an interesting one which took the headphones apart and subjected them to a variety of tests, they found that there isn't any bass so they aren't 5.1 at all, they are more like 6.0 (as they have 3 speakers on either side). Plus while they provide a direction for the sound they can't produce true 3D sound by the very fact that they are headphones, can't do proper positional sound.
However, they look pretty nice and if someone bought them for me I wouldn't say no.
I just ordered these: <a href='http://www.speed-link.com/prod.php?lang=de&sys_id=8&pb_id=8&prod_num=SL-8790' target='_blank'>Speed-Link medUSA 5.1 headset</a> The site is in German but there is an English version somewhere. <img src='http://www.gamecontrol.de/img/medium/sl-8790_1.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
I have yet to hear a poor review of these on the basis of quality. The price is a bit high, 40-60 GBP, but only slightly above other 5.1 headphones.
The only problem is that no store in the US carries them so I had to order from the UK. They should arrive Wednesday or so. I will let you know how they turn out.

I used to own a pair of those, broke in less then a MONTH.

Check the headset your buying comes with Drivers. (USB best bet)
If the headset can change its Treble/Bass/Noise-Reduction then your pretty much sorted.
$25
