<div class="IPBDescription">Yes this involves NS</div> I have friends who are interested in NS but don't have a hl cd key for steam. They plan on buying HL2 and then installing NS with that key.

Will the HL2 key be able to be used for NS and other HL1 mods?

Since using a HL2 cdkey you can most likely log on to steam with it, and thus download half-life 1 and install NS on it, my answer would be yes. I can't be sure, but most likely, yeah.

Since there's supposed to be a source ported version of HL1 included with HL2, I'd find it odd if they didn't let you play the original crappy old engine version with that CD key if you wanted to. It would just be yet another selling point for the game after all.

    Can't they just spend $10 for Half-Life 1?

I will agree at any moment that the investment of buying Half Life 1 for 10/15 bucks is probably one of the best buys for gameplay on the market right now.
Lots of incredibly fun mods (CS, NS, DoD and many many more).
NS alone justifies the buy as I am not a CS or DoD player.
Also let me not forget SvenCOOP which makes HL1 a total blast for some free range shooting and team tactics.

The best thing about HL1 is the fact that the engine is quite old and buffing your video accel to use 6x FSAA and 16x AF makes it look SO good.

Even with Half Life 2 on the way I doubt that there will be a lot of mods to play from the start.
And even though DM/TDM could be fun if physics can be used I doubt Valve themselves have a lot lined up for players considering the huge ammount of single player material they have to test and go through.

So just put on your steel toe'd boot and kick'em where it hurts until they buy it.
    Best money EVER SPENT.

if ns was made with half-life 2, how long would it take for all the coding, mapping, sounds and whatever to get finished into a beta form?

    Extremely long time.

As it would be a complete overhaul like any other mod would be made for HL2. Everything from scratch.

My HL2 CD key works fine with steam, I can download and play everything except CS:CZ.

If the Ati coupons are any indicator than I would say yes, because I play NS with a person who only has the free HL2 ATi coupon

The ATI coupon currently allows you to play Half-Life. Once Half-Life 2 is released, it will no longer allow you to play Half-Life.

Yes, you can use HL2 key to play NS and any other HL1 mod. Friend of mine bought gfx with HL2 key and plays NS now using it.

    This actually isn't true...

From what I read (this was a while ago...but it was on the offical SDK site) that they made it pretty easy, the code is pretty much the same you would just have to retexutre everything, maybe add a few anims and other new touches if you'd like, and then it would be good to go.

Flayra has also stated several times in the past, as have a number of admins, that if NS <b>was to be ported</b> (This is NOT saying it will be) then it will be coded from scratch to take full advantage of the new engine, not just a half-arsed port.
