<div class="IPBDescription">Yes, another doom thread</div> Ok everyone, I didnt feel like hijacking a thread so I created this one.
The problem is, don't understand how scary doom 3 can possibly be, and I do not know anyone who actually has the specs to run the damn beast.
Someone show me some "OMG THEY TOOK HER freaking BABY" screenshots, because us lower end people have simply no idea. The most desturbing I ever found a game was Silent Hill 2 (which still makes me foam at the mouth).
Please post ONLY YOUR OWN SCREENSHOTS!! Everyone has seen the official ones.
But without further ado LET THE SCREENSHOTS ROOLL IN
(Please, if you at all can post high res, low compression and from your own host, for the sake of the forums and our enjoyment, thankyou)
Mods feel free to lock/delete/frown if you see something TOO disturbing.
*edit* Please also explain what is happening in your screenshot *edit*

Regaurdless, I took this screenie a little while ago. It's a simple zombie coming to eat my brains <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<a href='http://rb6rs.homestead.com/files/doom3.png' target='_blank'>here</a>
That said, the monsters that *do* appear are quite frightening. I haven't gotten far into it, but the Zombies, Imps, and Pinkies I've encountered give you just enough time to go "oh ****" before they're on top of you. Encounters are swift, frantic, and frequently painful. Getting shot kicks your view and makes it damn hard to return fire. Getting hit with a fireball means your vision is obscured by the smoke and heat while the Imp closes ground for another strike. Ammo is around, but there isn't a lot of it. Every shot counts.
There are a few creepy moments, plenty of startling moments. The bathroom mirror was a thoroughly disturbing incident. But none of these really translate in a simple screenshot; it's the total experience that scares.
____
You mentioned Silent Hill 2. I haven't played it, but I played the first one. One of the first really creepy moments was chasing your daughter into an alley and hearing a rhythmic squeaking sound, like metal on metal. You keep going, and you see an overturned, blood-stained wheelchair. A little farther, and suddenly there's a gurney with a corpse on it, obscured by a bloody sheet. Why is it there? You don't know, but DAMN do you not want to find out.
But if I showed you a screenshot of the chair, or the gurney, you wouldn't be terribly squicked out. It just doesn't translate. DOOM3 shots are similarly lacking (though as I said, the type of scare is very different).
Meh... you may be right, but I just can simply nit understand what the mirror, the floating chair and "they took my baby" is all about.
Who knows... maybe the events like the mirror are instances of Hell/Satan *attempting* to take you over and failing... what each member of the station went through as he succumbed.
Oh, another creepy moment - coming across a zombie-ish marine corpse lying on the ground, and having to walk back and forth past it repeatedly... eventually I just gibbed the body so I didn't have to worry about it coming to life while I wasn't watching. ^^

edit: or is that just to show off how good the lighting could look, but the chances of the zombies being in perfect conditions like that are almost nothing?
God I want Doom3 NOW. I know thats exactally what I would do, only it'd be on the first pass, not the third or fourth pass. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I remember that ally thing coil was just talking about, god I remember that, and all you have is a little lighter to light your way? I turned the game off -right then,- too scary, lmao!
It's tension is easily surpassed by the Fatal Frame games, the claustrophobia too, the freakiness and greusome things (like the walls growing, etc) have already been covered to death by the Silent Hill games, but again, far better.
Doom 3 is a great game, but it's about as scary as my mum.
There's a mod (also linked in that thread) that re-enables self-shadowing models, and the screenshot comparison is something else. Maybe with that mod, you'll get shots as sexy as that one.

The game has to be really sick to produce a screenshot that is scary. I've never seen scary screenshots. There are other factors that add to the scary factor like sound, or your thoughts. You'll have to experience it yourself to find out how scary it really is. Because a screenshot won't do it (for me at least).

Its at that part where you gotta use the candy-crane to put the toxic sludge down the hole. When you go upstairs(before or after that, I dunno), turn left. You should hear "Follow me", see some bloody footsteps, there ya go.

Oh, you meet 'em all right....heheheh.
That scene freaked me out the most so far in the game (just started the monorail now).
I'm just trying to figure out what was so freaky about the control room area. I'm looking around, the screen is red, and one chair is kinda vibrating, then flies up and (apparently) smacks me.
So what? The invisible thing carrying the bodies off was scarier. No reason to red-screen it. :b
