Banned From An Irc Channel.
<div class="IPBDescription">Yeah!</div> Well, this is completely off topic from just about anything...just a rant of sorts. Anyway, today I was banned from yet another of the many IRC channels, for not kissing the pompous **** of any of the people in 'high places.'
I, like most other hardheaded **** refuse to suck up and show any more respect to IRC admins, people in 'high places', Steam server admins, than I do to anybody else anywhere any time. And I get banned for it, a lot. If an admin/anyone with power disrespects me, I disrespect them...then when they ask me for an apology or whatever it doesnt come.
So, in conclusion I ask you fellow admins and whatnot, what do you think makes these people think they are so much better than everyone else in the universe? What makes them think they should disrespect other poeple, and not expect anything to come back at them. I'm sure most admins/mods/etc. throw fits when you tell them off, as most people will just suck up a bit to stick around.
("So, in conclusion I ask you fellow admins and whatnot" i say this because I am an admin in a TS server, in fact...number two in the admin ranks. I have the power to ban (for any length of time, even permanent), slap, kick, slay, etc. there are no restrictions, and I do not feel the need to be like this. Once again, just completely off topic...hence why it is here.)

Hiding behind that kind of a shield is just cowardly.
And as far as you being banned from my server...The longest ban ive ever issued was a five minute ban, and that was for a kid breaking server rules...rather than arguing with me.
edit: moreover, you are not being "correct" or "justified" in thinking you were wrongly banned, and you are most certainly INcorrect in thinking that the people who banned you were "hiding behind a shield". you stepped into THEIR domain, and were ushered OUT. in a public domain, they could not do this, but it is a PRIVATE domain, in which you do not have the same rights. NOT a republic. NOT a democracy.
those of you who think admins are just "abusing their power," compare it to living in the United States. there are LAWS in the United States. by entering the country, you acknowledge that you will follow those laws, or face consequences for not doing so. would you complain about the judicial system "abusing its power"?
pretty simple, huh?
When it comes to IRC you sort of invited people to join, but it's much more random and you don't know all of them. It's a different situation, it's so much easier being rude to someone you don't know, don't like and don't have to face in person. There's also the <a href='http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2004-03-19&res=l' target='_blank'>Greater ****wad theory</a>, which wouldn't apply when it's just you and some friends you invited.
The moon is made out of cheese.
its theyre thing. not yours..

And on a more serious note, he is exactly 100% correct about my feelings on this situation. Those of you who think im 'disrespecting' them just for the fun of it, you're wrong. I told him and his little buddies off just because they decided it'd be fun to **** with the new kid...who as stated before they dont know, and they dont have to face. People can get really ballsy over the internet.
After the fact, whoever is left in the channel will probably make fun of you. They get their jollies, and your e-wang is wilted in the process. Naturally, if the channel has people in it, they enjoy the administration/atmosphere and don't really care if you do. It's not worth it.
And i'm already very aware of how the internet works, how the people on the internet work, etc. etc. But this post was made as just more of a rant/venting session...
2. "just because you're on irc doesn't mean etc etc." actually, it does. i'm going to assume that, in the IRC channel you were in, nobody signed anything saying they swear they'll exercise common decency.

Why do admins abuse power? Some are children, or vindictive, or just jerks. Sometimes you catch one of us on a bad day. (: It varies... we're human too, you know. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
As an authority figure on these forums, two other forums, and several chat rooms, my opinion:
1) There is a reason this forum has a "no flaming. EVER." rule. If you check the forum rules, it says "No behavior is bad enough that warrants retaliation." It's a way of keeping the peace. Some anecdotes:
"Arguing on the Internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded."
"Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."
The point is that when you "disrespect" someone in kind for attacking you in the first place, you're perpetuating the cycle. The post I quoted above is a perfect example, in my opinion -- "you turds," "to hell with you kid." Knowing Grendel personally, I'm pretty sure he laughed his *** off at that comment, because you've gotten him entirely backwards (and he's also [probably] quite a bit older than you, to boot). Anyway, that's neither here nor there. My point is that an antagonistic reply is, if anything, worse than the instigating comment. Take the high ground, no matter who you're dealing with. Worst comes to worst, just hit "Ignore."
2) Others have said, and are right, that it's their server/channel. Their rules. You can leave whenever you like, so there isn't much point in getting your panties in a knot over childish behavior. That said, I totally understand the frustration in dealing with immature behavior on the 'net (heck, I admin these forums <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->), and sometimes an undirected vent can be soothing. But in the grand scheme of things, it's really just not worth worrying about, no more than it is worth retaliating.
Hey, if you're going to leave, and never be comming back the normal way...
why <i>not</i> go out with a bang? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
[As well, if a person of higher-authority is acting in such a way to actually break his own rules, their credability will shurely fail and will thusly be attacked upon by people like perdition, whom wont be picked on when he sees the mods and admins break their own rules. the rules are there for everyone to obey, system admin or not...]
That 'no flaming. EVER' rule isnt too well enforced on these boards. Look at the events that unfolded with Nexus, many of the people who flamed him just for having poor english still get to hang out here, on their original accounts. :\
Just an observation I happened to make, not trying to spark a war with a mod or anything.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->An admin reserves the right to change the rules on their server on a whim, and to also break them. Once again, it is THEIR server.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And that makes that person, well...a bad person. Who deserves nothing short of being embarrased infront of those people he 'rules' over. And this discussion isnt so much about the rights that mods/admins/etc. have in their servers, but the quality of the person with those rights. Sure, in the TS server that I have admin in...I <i>could</i> ban you for calling myself, or a friend a noob, or a bastard or something...but I wont, because it's effed up...and just not right to smoke someone over something so...lame.
1- you should treat all people with respect, because when you do it shows more about who you are then who the other people your treating are. if your nice to everyone people know your a nice guy. if you respect everyone and treat them well then everyone knows your a respectable guy
its a give a little take a little reationship, if everyone is nice to everyone else. then everyone is happy

People get second chances. Generally, if someone shows his or herself to be an unrepentant jerk with nothing to contribute but trolling, said person is banned rather quickly. If a person who's been hanging around posting for a year writes something flamey, it'll just get nuked and they'll be warned. Heck, almost everyone on these boards has posted something that was borderline if not outright flameish at some point.
I don't think I have ever had a post nuked.
though I think I made a post in a thread that was deleated (as I can't seem to find one of my posts, and the thread needed a lock, and I was contribting to thaT)
something about fat people
and I quoted Cereal killer on "Spandex, It's a privledge, not a right"
