What's to press down on then, waller?

Yes, I haven't thought this through.

Yeah. Hackers would be annoying. And viruses. And popups. And can you imagine the spyware? Just walking down the street after finishing your latest online VR game of CS 7, and you get a "YOUR MIND IS INFECTED WITH SPYWARE, THINK YES TO GET RID OF IT!" in your eyes. AVG would have a hell of a time.

There are two possibilities for VR. One possibility involves changing the external environment around the person to reflect the virtual world. This would be the "Holodeck" senario. The other, more likely, possibility involves altering the sensory perception of the person to trick them into thinking they are in a virtual world. This would no doubt become a direct implant into the brain.

You would place sensors into specific regions of the brain, routing their signals to an interface converter, near the surface of the skin. There, the signal would be converted into a standardized interface and interact with a wired or wireless interface. This interface would then be used by a computer for input and output, much as a keyboard and monitor are today.

Of course, placing metal wires inside your brain isn't going to work. The preference is for all technology inside your body to be biological, so the body will not attack it, as well as to allow the technology to recieve power from your body. This type of technology could perform self-maintainence, as well as adapt to changes in the body, specifically those related to aging.

I'm certainly not the type to become the first person with this thing in my head, however I wouldn't be opposed to using it after a significant number of successful human trials. This type of technology has for more legitimate uses beyond simple gaming, but the topic specifically involves gaming.

Eliminating the possibility to feel pain may exist in early generations of this technology for safety reasons, but I see no reason to keep it out permanently. Remember that pain does not always feel extremely uncomfortable. Feeling a slight pain sensation when you're arm is blown off is much more emersive than seeing something that says 50% health at the bottom of your view. Also, I imagine pain may be a necessary factor in the ability to engage in most popular online activity.

As far as hacking goes, it's only prevalent because noones dying from it. Also, programming is currently extremely sloppy, because noone is dying from it. As one can guess, any company that writes any type of software involving the possibility of killing people would take great care to make sure it's safe, if simply so they don't get sued and/or sent to prison. There would be no such thing as beta testing on something like this.

actually sandstorm they've already successfully planted chips in the human brain. One such experiment was to give sight to the blind; a headset takes in the visual information translating it into electronic information which is then passed to the chip located in the visual cortex... the problem is the construct that has to be worn outside of the head is far to chunky to be realistically feasible for mass use and the resolution of the images is shockingly low. Everything is big squares =/

As for the 'what to press down on' question for being suspended, you just have a pnuematic frame for the legs to go into. When the foot reaches the 'ground' the frame prevents the foot from going lower. Pretty hard to do but I think it could be done =3

I can't believe nobody's mentioned co-op games yet. Just think of the possible AvP2 evac goodness, for example. The whole "holy **** we gotta get out of here" feeling when endless (would need to be AI controlled) aliens just keep pouring down on you and your buddies would be incredible.

I'd like V.R shooting/attacking games, nice place to release anger, and feel free to have mute on.

I remember seeing something like that ages ago, but i think they implanted a chip into the retina, and it just gave the guy the ability to see incredibly strong sources of light and incredibly vague outlines. But the look on a guys face who's been blind for ages (or his whole life, i can't remember) who could then see is something that went straight to my heart. It was all nice and stuff.

Is it the same thing or different?

This reminds me of a peripheral one finnish game critic once proposed as a counter to the god syndrome rampant among gamers. He called it the NNirvi's Amazing Hit Simulator.

The hit simulator is plugged to a wall outlet and then connected to the forehead of the user. When the user gets hit in a game, he receives an electrical shock that is in terms of power directly proportionate to the amount of damage taken. For example, when the adventure party members are hit by a skeleton in Eye of the Beholder 2, the player feels a slight tickle, but when the final boss dragon slams the party the whole city block loses power because of the massive jolt of voltage the player gets. And don't even get me started on the agonising pain caused by mind flayers...

Naturally, the concept is a joke, but a good one, since most players run through hordes of enemies and don't care a bit about the damage they get since they firmly believe there's a medpack just around the corner.

About VR graphics, well, I'll play if the game designers finally stop with the freaking spider fetish they have. I mean, I don't want to get knocked around by a 10 foot wolf spider on my spare time. That's just not my idea of fun.

What I'd like to see next instead of VR, though, would be actual body mass of objects and players. The current physics engines are cool, but if a pinky lands on top of me in Doom3, I oughta become 2-dimensional, not just stand there under him wondering if he has noticed he's sitting on his intended prey.

    hmmm... the one I saw was definitely in the brain rather than the retina, though they might have also put one there to help trasmit the data. They showed a simulated image of what he probably saw and it was like 64x64 rez or something. It was just a jumble of coloured squares ^^;

edit: having a VR sense of touch would really add to games, picking stuff up and whatnot would be easier and though pain is probably bad, pressure from a hit would alleviate one of the major problems of FPSses (being unable to really know where you're being hit and from what direction without a paper doll, onscreen hud-flash or message telling you).
Unfortunately I can see that VR touch would probably lead to cyber-pron faster than decent gaming ~sigh~ -.-

lol, like when an Onos dropd down on some marines head and nothing happens and it looks like the marine is wearing an Onos hat.

    heehee

But yea co op would be cool. DOOM 3 or AvP2 or even some multiplayer DoD action lol.

Either way id probably be in the co op group that gets ambushed by some freaky Doom 3 tick rush and get separated from my group in the chaos only ot get trapped in some corner.

Man, playing Silent Hill in VR would be great, it will add so much immersion, as it stands, survival horror games like that suffer because there isn't total immersion, if such a thing came about, i think it's time to start buying more underwear.

well thats why the helmet/chip thingy wouldnt tell your brain you got shot in the HEAD specifically, it would maybe just... hint at it... >_>

oor when you get shot in the head/heart/somewhere vital that would actually kill you if your brain thought it was shot there the game would immediatly go into some happy catbus room or respawn you or something...

or keep part of you aware that you ARE in a game... itd be like a dream... you can get shot in the head in a dream and still not officially die, but you still wont feel the pain...

I think having pain would be pretty cool. If there was ever any incentive to get better at a game, that would be it. Tired of getting ripped to shreds by a nazis MP40? Kill him first! And it still wouldnt be real.

Well , I'll play if they don't !... Hissing , leaping spiders of death bring so much excitement into otherwise quiet or straightforward games. I remember the day I was playing Thievery with the lights off , running through the creepy asylum's corridors , worried to encounter guards... the giant spider was unleashed , it proceeded to kill the patrolling guards one after another , then stumbled upon me without a warning. By the time I turned back to face it , the abomination leaped at me with an horrifying hiss , it was so scary I actually screamed...

Of course , there will always be giant spiders in FPS and RPG games. Game designers aren't going to stop using that mighty freudian image...

RPGs would be awesome in a VR environment.

Actually, I'd like to play any one of the Thief games. Although that would be a little hard to handle. I mean, playing a game where you wander around a mechanist building in the dark with multiple enemies is completely different from actuallly being in a dark building full of homicidal robots. And I don't know if I want The Cradle to be any more real...

On second thought, I'd rather play a VR version of Grim Fandango. At least then you're already dead.
