Ns Doesn't Run

mindblitzmindblitz Join Date: 2004-08-22 Member: 30786Members
i've downloaded and installed ns from the site..all three files...I've done this 3 times already and i'm sure i installed it correctly because I can see a bunch of servers when i start it up. Everytime I try joining one though it does all it's precaching, it connects to the server..and then all i see is a couple seconds of the map..then halflife just shuts down with no error message or anything..I can run counterstrike and halflife alright... 500mhz processor, 600+MB of RAM and a 64Mb Geforce mx400..

    Welcome mindblitz!

Have you got the latest drivers?

    <a href='http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html' target='_blank'>http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html</a>

I would recommend the 56.72, they are the least buggy.

    GL

edit: That driver I recommended is for xp/2000, make sure you get the right one for your OS.

Have you gone thru to make sure you installed correctly?

    <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77694&hl=' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...topic=77694&hl=</a>

Your rig is close to the minimum to be able to play. Make sure no other programs are running that are needed, especially ones that use bandwidth. Try scanning using Spybot S&D and Ad aware to clean any spyware.

I don't think its his rig, I have the same problem. I'm running a very clean system (no viruses, spywear or unwanted background tasks what so ever) with the following specs:

    AMD Barton 2500+
    Radeon 9700 NP
    1GB TwinMos RAM
    Windows XP Pro

All latest drivers and runs Doom 3 like a dream. I have the same problem with this game though, it opens and joins the server fine but then closes with no messages at all.

After getting the main install file I unziped and placed inside C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\animalboy@ntlworld.com\half-life. Then I unziped the larger of the two patches, beta a, which has a file name of ns_v30_b4_patch_dedicated_server.zip and placing the files from this inside C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\animalboy@ntlworld.com\half-life\nsp. It over writes files which I presume is updating them? I was suprised this patch was not just a run to install... I think I may have gone wrong here? Then I just ran the smaller patch, beta 4a installing it.

I think I most likely installed the game wrong, but I don't know how. Could you possibly correct my method? I have read the install instructions on the sticky but could not find some of the files it talks of moving.

    Thanks, Golden Touch.

why would some one install the dedicated server patch if they are a client....

    2) Play HL atleast Once via Steam (just booting up the training mission will do).

    3) Download these 3 files:
    ns_install_v3_b1.exe
    ns_v30_b4_patch.exe
    ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe

    4) Install NS V3.0 Beta 1 (ns_install_v3_b1.exe) (This should auto install to steam\steamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp, if it does not, move the NSP folder there).

    5) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4 (ns_v30_b4_patch.exe) (point this at steam\steamApps\your@email\Half-Life\ do NOT include the NSP).

    6) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4a (ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe) (See * at bottom).

    7) Search your Hard drive(s) for folders named nsp.

    8) If you have more than one you messed up.  Goto Step 3.

If you folow these steps properly you will not get client.dll or map.bsp errors.

If you are positive you have folowed them corectly then redownload the installer form a different location.

*There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers.  Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life

    <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->1) Search your Hard drive for ns and nsp.

    2) Deleate all folders named that.

    3) Start from step 3 in my guide.

    4) Make sure you are using the properly named files for each step, the file name is listed with the step.

    5) Make sure you point each file at the place listed with the step
5a) The first one should auto install with no choice of destination
5b) The second one goes to: Steam\SteamApps\your@email\Half-Life
5c) The 3rd should probably go to Steam\SteamApps\your@email\

    6) After each install step in my guide (steps 4, 5 and 6) search your hard drive for nsp
6a) If you find only one folder, and it is located at Steam\SteamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp then you are good to go.
6b) If you have only one nsp but it is some where else, move it to that location.
6c) If you have 2 nsp folders, then move the one that is not in that location, over writing all files when prompted.
6d) Each time you move an nsp folder search your hard drive again for nsp to double check.

Here ends my Slightly more advanced Guide on how to friken install NSv3.0B4a

It is now becoming another file on my desktop.<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->

Yeah I've read these instructions many times and made sure I followed them correctly. I just haven't tried using a different installer for ns 3.0 beta 1. I am downloading from a different mirror right now. There is no other mirror for ns 3.0 beta 4a. So I'm going to try this out and I'll see if it works.

you see, you have to actualy follow all of the step

that includes using the proper installers

if you can't find it, google it.

heheh I tried another server and fortunately I was able to fire my guns..and everything seems to be working perfectly..for anyone with the same problem as mine original one..just try downloading different installers and make sure the installer for ns3.0beta1 isn't a zip file..it should be an installer(.exe). To all those who helped me find my solution I really appreciate it. MY PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED!!Thanks guys! I can't wait to get back from work to play this crazy looking game. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
