...OS not made for them yet?
I've just had a discussion with my brother about which processor I should get and he said that they haven't made an operating system for 64 bit processors yet. He said that you can d/l a beta copy of their new os.
For all of yall who've updated their comps to 64 bit, can you tell me if you have to d/l a beta copy or does it work with the latest OS?

Longhorn isn't coming out for a good 2 years at least though? And, btw, for some reason 64-bit procs do a lot better at gaming. so it might be ok to invest the extra 40$ for an ath-64.

What are you basing this on?
and the os does not have to support 64 bit processors, as 64 bit processors support 32 bit applications. (read: unless ms decides to tell longhorn not to boot if the processor is not a 32 bit processor, longhorn will work under the new amds and soon to come intels. note that this would not be a wise move on the part of microsoft)

Yeah 32 bit apps run on 64 bit processors, but you are not getting any perfomance increase just because you are using a 64 bit processor.

Farcry has the athlon 64Bit logo stamped to the back of it

Er I think you are generalizing things quite a bit.
AMD64 uses an extension of the x86 instructions to run application that have been developed to run in 64bits. It is not the number of bits that the CPU has but rather what instruction sets it can execute. The Alpha is 64 bit too and I'd like to see some one running 32-bit x86 Windows XP on it without some sort of emulator.
Sums it up nicely.
To clear up other points:
WinXP 64bit Ed exists, but certainly is not free.
Longhorn no longer uses SQL filing system, is clunky, chunky, and broken. I would not use it even if it does support 64bit (my version does not, but that's a Beta.)
Linux has 64 bit Eds (Red hat does at least,) but I have not tried them. (Now that I have a stable install of a linux distro I like, I won't be chaning it for a while. )
Think that covers everything.
Ah,
AMD64 > Intel HT/other intel => Most AMDs > Other offerings
IMO. Not biased too, as I have PCs with both AMD and Intel boards.
