Stolen!!!
Ok, for those of you who don't know what the scream is, here ya go.

http://wolyniec.republika.pl/scream.jpg

It has been stolen!!! I love this painting, I chose it to replicate in a painting class that I took a few years back. I dunno it just has something about it. I want to find the guy that stole it and kill him.

I just saw this on TV, and I was shocked...

I dunno why people steal famous paintings. They haveto know that sooner or later, when they try to sell it, they're gonna get caught by the cops or reported.

Apparently, another version of "The Scream" was stolen from the National Gallery in Oslo in 1994 (This one, the original I believe, was kept in the Munch Museum). That one was ransomed for $1 million, but recovered in a sting operation conducted by Scotland Yard.

The robbers also took "Madonna," possibly Munch's second-best-known work. Since both works are so famous and absolutely unique, a ransom demand seems most likely.

The police found broken frames a distance from the museum, and the car itself in northern Oslo. Art critics and historians are worried that the paintings will be damaged; "The Scream" is tempura on a piece of cardboard 25"x33", and could be destroyed if it is bent. "Madonna" is oil on canvas, and a bit safer out of its frame.

    Here's "Madonna":

Well, look on the bright side. At least we live in an age that if something terrible were to happen to the originals we still can make duplicates almost as good. I mean, yeah it sucks but at least the piece wouldn't be lost forever....

    Definately sucks though. :(

lol, I think it's awesome. as long as the painting doesn't get ruined in the process, this kind of thing keeps the art world exciting . paintings must get bored hanging up on a wall like that.

That's barely a bright side. Duplicating art is as decent a practice as plagiarism. In fact.. it IS plagiarism. And no doubt it would probably lose the "feel" of the original, as no emotion would be put into it.

I realize that, but there's a reason people pay millions for the originals of these works, and a very small percentage of that for duplications. The original has a story behind it. It's like knocking down the colliseum to build a new one. Just my opinion i guess, but that's how i see it.

I don't care what version it is, I'm not paying more than $80 for a painting, ever.

Anyways, I hope no lives are wasted over this painting.

I read about the paintings being stolen in the paper, and I saw a picture of the two thieves carrying them off..

I just hope the scream isn't damaged because of the paper it's on it needs constant regulation.

actually from a description a woman gave of the robbery, the guys sounded rather undoubleohsevenish. they "took the madonna off the wall and started banging it on the wall and the ground to break the grey strings off." I cringed when I heard that.

But I laughed when she said the started to go out the front then turned around and went out the back; a real smooth heist guys gee wizz.

Of course. The original is a treasure, I'm not disputing that. I'm just saying that at least the picture, the idea of what the artist was trying to convey, won't be completely lost forever in case these aren't recovered because we have copies/duplicates. The duplicates aren't worth anything really, but still its a nice picture to look at. That was my point.
