good bands/artists?
Hm, I'm looking to find more jpop to listen to, and possibly empty my wallet for. I like almost any japanese music, ranging from enka (well, not so much enka... it's kind of annoying after a while) to jrock.
stuff that i would like suggestions for:
jrock, such as Earthshaker, Lucifer, The Brilliant Green, and Glay
jpop, such as B'z, ELT, and Ayu
rave/trance, such as move
eurodance, such as D&D
i don't want suggestions for:
craptacular R&B like Ken Hirai. Ech.
sugar pop like morning musume. incredibly ech.
*edit* NO HAPPATAI/YATTA! Just, NO!
preferably from before the past 4 years.

The Pillows.
The same people that did the soundtrack for FLCL (mainly J-rock), fairly good to listen to XD
Though if you want JPop there are lots....like Utada Hikaru, Nami Tamaki, Ayumi Hamasaki, etc. There's too much to list, I feel my head would explode.
Btw, yeah, it's impossible not to know about Ayu or Utada Hikaru if you've been to any asian country D: they're so incredibly...huge, i suppose.

Agreed, they're quite uber.
Also, for a little bit of extremely poppish j-punk (none of that crazy noise stuff, although Japan produces no shortage of that) that also tries to be ska once ince in a great long while get yourself some Snail Ramp, they're an extremely fun-sounding band. A few good songs of theirs to hear would be "Mind your step", "Growing Up", or "Chocoshake"
And The Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is worth getting your hands on just for thei cover of the Tetris song, or the Sesame Street theme, even ignoring the fact that they have once of the best big-band sounds I've heard of out just about anyone, and they also did the Lupin III theme, which rocks.

Isn't one of the hives on ns_ayumi called Hamasaki System?
O_O
Was that the second opening song? I thought L'Arc~En~Ciel were responsible for GTO's initial opening song.
Most of the Japanese music i listen to is crazy-assed eurobeats. Stuff like Bazooka Girls, Franz "Mad Cow" Tornado, etc etc.
As for some JRock, i'm partial to the likes of Dir En Grey, Malice Mizer, X Japan (Cheesey ballads a-go-go), and other crap. Then there's Aiko, Garnet Crow, Triceratops, Gackt, blah blah blah blah.

Er X Japan does have a repertoire of heavy songs. The ballads are listenable.
Any way I am surprised that no one mentioned Luna Sea, two of their songs are rather good, Gravity and I For You.
no.

they did one of the naruto openings, didn't they? Hm..
Yeah, the second one.
Haruka Kanata.
Chirolyn & the Angels: kind of like... more upbeat rock, like L'arc en Ciel but with a different sound - they're not that well known, but I think they're one of the best as far as generic rock goes.
Dir en grey: started out as indie gothrock/metal, and now they sound a lot more like Slipknot, but their early albums are AWESOME.
Do as Infinity: female-vocal rock.
Dragon Ash: started out as punk, now do hip-hop/rap WITH rock. Some very pleasant tunes with good beats.
Gackt: THE #1 male vocal in Japan for some time now, ever since he left Malice Mizer. I don't like his solo work much, but he's got some excellent stuff (particularly "Mizerable" which has some gorgeous violins)
Globe: Some dance-pop/electronica stuff.
Hide (aka "Hide with Spread Beaver"): of Engrish.com t-shirt fame. They're what my friends call "buttpunk" - it's punk, but not quite? I like their stuff, though.
Kagrra: Some very interesting "cultural" rock. Not sure how to describe it.
Kishidan: A very popular rock band that spoofs the old Japanese biker gangs.
L'arc en Ciel: One of the most popular rock bands a few years ago, though they're more or less dead now. VERY well known.
Luna Sea: 10 years of music ranging from indie-glamrock to, well.. pop-rock. I've been listening to these guys since like, jr. high...
Machine: Industrial.
Malice Mizer: gothic (in a more traditional sense, not nu-wave or stuff like that)
Penicillin: A pretty well known rock group. Heavier style than L'arc.
Sads: heavier rock, some interesting music... kind of like a band you might expect to hear at a bar, I guess?
Shiina Ringo: female pop/rock/ska/traditional singer - extremely popular, though she's been AWOL to have a baby.
Siam Shade: popular generic rock group
Sugizo: ex-Luna Sea lead guitar, now does solo work. some interesting rock tunes, violin solos, jazz...
the Brilliant Green: female vocal rock.
the Yellow Monkey: more generic rock
Two-Mix: Disappeared off the scene awhile ago - electronica, I think you call it? They did most of the Gundam-Wing themes.
X (later "X-Japan"): everything from heavy metal to soft rock ballads.
Youjeen: Actually a female Korean rocker that got popular in Japan.
Watch the clip, its HILARIOUS!
It makes you realise how different some cultures can be

Here's a site dedicated to the goddess of eyes:
http://ayumi.primenova.com/
I swear, if you like anime, you can't help but love the way this girl looks. She's got the big eyes, has had every single hairstyle ever used, can be cute, hot, sexy, different variations of the 3, cultural, punk, hardcore, goth, pure pop princess- basically, she's made herself her own dress up doll. And to boot, her songs are pretty good, especially when others remix it.
[EDIT]Changed the link as well as heading for it. It didn't work, had to use a new site.[/EDIT]
*edit* anyone know if B.B.Queens is any good? They did the Chibi Maruko-chan opening song, and i liked that, cause it's funny...but is any of their other stuff any good? I looked and they only have 1 released album that I can find?
Aube
Varies between minimalistic experimental music and full-blown noise usually created from field recordings.
Dissecting Table
Noise with old school industrial vibes and a dose of speed metal.
Government Alpha
Pure feedback noise. Very harsh material
Merzbow
The uncrowned king of noise music. His albums Tauromachine and Music for Bondage Performance 2 are especially worth trying.
I don't find her attractive, she's got quite a schnoz for an asian.
Uhhh....Ayumi has the biggest eyes in Japan. I watched it in some japanese show (they stopped airing it recently though)
You might want to look for some other bands like Orange Range or something. L'Arc~En~Ciel is good to listen to though
Can't find much more though. Those are all I can remember XD

For trancy stuff: Ayu (Ayumi Hamasaki)
Yea she does some cheesy stuff for anime but forget that. If you like trance/vocal trance,
I recommend the album called Ayu Trance

My fav. tracks
Unite! (Airwave Remix)
Audience (Darren Tate Remix)
M (Above and Beyond Remix)
Appears (Armin van Buuren Remix)

Yes. They also did the first opening to Full Metal Alchemist.
