12+ Hrs Work Day...
<div class="IPBDescription">Inventory for the LOSE!</div> I just started working at Radio Shack on Friday.
To day (Sunday) was Inventory....
Inventory basically consists of everyone coming in early (7am today) and we scan every single item in the store. Mind you, this is radio shack, we sell transistors, resistors, zip ties, Batteries (friken hundreds of them),dvd players, computers, cameras, radios, watches, friken everything.
My boss (new manager, this is the first time he has RUN an inventory, he has worked them many times), said we would be done by 2.
He was wrong.
We finished SCANNING everything around 1.
from 1-3 we tried to get the reconciliation sheets to print (this included 1 hr of sitting there, and then rebooting the system).
Reconciliation consists of the computer telling us what we SHOULD have vs what we CLAIM to have, and where the errors are. We then have to go through the store and find said errors and verify what we actually have... by hand....
This obviously enough takes a LONG time, after all these are some of the ways the counts could be different:
1) Theft
2) Miss Count (human error)
3) Scanners messing up (I am rather sure they did this allot)
4) people messing up in ringing in a sale/return
5) things that have been appropriated for store use
6) The last inventory being wrong (as I am sure it was in parts)
7 etc etc etc
Now I introduce Mr Idiot, an 18yr old that acts like a 6yr old often.
Mr Idiot, insisted on doing the place with the lowest $$ values. For those of you who have ever been in a Radio Shack you might remember the draws of LEDs, Diodes, Transistors, couplers, resistors, etc etc etc. Yah, thats what Mr Idiot did.
He of course was SURE that he counted every single item (he claimed to have scanned each item, instead of even using quantity input to scan 5 of the same item at once). He has also never done inventory before (he has been around for like 2 or so months), so he was mouthing off (As per usual) about how we would have "Like MAX 50 items wrong, MAX!".
He left at 2 am (supposedly to go to a second job, which he never showed up at, though I wouldn't put it past him to have gotten lost).
We had 60+ pages (small font) of items that were wrong.
Our stock clerk (guy who personally set up the area that Mr Idiot was scanning), got mostly the area that Mr Idiot had done.
All those items he scanned each one of? Nope.
Computer says 2 scanned, we should have 5...
*finds SKU*
we have... 5!
repeat.
I was stupid enough to offer to take 1/2 this guys work (as I finished my work first), got that was a stupid idea.
needless to say I am still **** off, even after having dinner.
Oh, and my food before Sausage And Peppers fro din din? 4 donuts, 2 cups of coffee, and a bowl of cereal (albeit it is a mixing bowl).
Oh, and one more addendum for Mr Idiot:
He Cheats In CS.
Athena, you there? wana back me up on how much inventory sucks?

That's the icing on the scum-based cake.
oh and the whole Cheating in CS thing. Format his PC for me will ya?
But idiots are idiots, right? If their idiots in real life, they sure as hell will be online.
Just be glad that you're not a 51 year old Construction worker, mainly heavy equipment, who frequently gets stuck doing laboror's work because their too stupid and lazy to do it, even though its just digging a hole or sticking a stick in the ground. Oh, and count that with 14 hour days, that sometimes go to 16 or even 18(!!!), and then count the fact he changes job sites back around several times a week, and his foreman gives out the paychecks, so sometimes it'll be the WRONG FOREMAN who gets the checks, and so he has to spend a extra hour driving to ANOTHER job site just to get his paycheck. Oh, and did I mention having to drive a hour to and fro each job site because their too stupid to have Fresno people not work in a town 50 miles away, and those people work here?
Moral of the story: The world has lots, and lots, of idiots. Just make sure you get paid to make it worth it.
Yes. It. Frigging. Sucks.
Especially when items turn up missing - you wind up having to recomb multiple times, and when you work with dojinshi (they're more or less American comic-book size), it's an absolute pain in the ****. Carton after carton of this stuff...
and then having to back up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
"Wait, we have this? I think I saw it in one of the other cartons..."
Oh, and combine that with the 3 packs of Inital D Manga sitting in our basement.... I real have no clue wth is up with those :P (no we don't sell Manga)
Oh, and the pay?
I get minimum wage, forgot to put that in :)
I actualy get commision, but b/c I am not selling, I get minimum wage :)
so I made like $60+ today....
shoot me now :)
oh, and the smily counter can bite me :)
<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>Never work in a restaurant. It sucks.</span>
I would rather have the invintory, but that was just b/c my boss was a smack tard.
I also actualy just switched jobs from $7:50/hr stock clerk at a pet suply place to Radio Shack.
I am planing on being decent at sales (As well as actualy getting customers to like me and to understand wth they are buying)

never work in a resteraunt owned by a fat **** and his dirty white trash family....
and never let him beg you to stay and up you pay per hour than screw you out of 3 weeks worth of pay
and never work by yourself, it sucks (closing used to take about 45 minutes when 4 people were working, but when the resteraunt started losing money it was only me working <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> and i only got payed for time until 10:00 even if it took me to 11:00)
i enjoyed much more working doing manual labor for this guy who could be a real asshat if he didnt get his way <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
get this; i spent last month upgrading our register software at a computer repair shop, and the new software includes things like inventory tracking. we have an inventory much like radio shacks, lots of parts that look the same, but are actually different items for different purposes and different values.
so to implement an inventory system everything has to be counted and named. i cant just scan in everything because we dont have any scanner, so the boss buys a wireless barcode scanner (and those things cost a months pay, and i had to research them to find out which one to get) now we can scan UPC codes on everything, but things keep getting lost due to people writing up receipts wrong, returns, things lost and things appropriated for store use.
howd you like to have never done an inventory and get to teach your boss how to do one? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
life is hard, get used to complaining, it's the national pasttime.
and yah, every buisness loses stuff constantly (check my list for why we would misscount), bad tickets, theft, droping something under a table, etc etc.
just set up a good system now and you will be much better off <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
pens don't have warning labels
nor to staplers
yes he has hit himself (many times) with each....
I don't count on him living to see his 21st.
"Face these items, then go onto the next isle and do the same"
"What?"
"Turn the lables so that people can read them"
"Oooo-k."
//Manager leaves to let me do my business
//looks down isle
"Crap."
True story.
And then the customers started asking me questions.
Oh, god, I wished those twinkies were daggers. Great, golden-yellow daggers... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I think I got ya beaten on the bored factor.
For around 4 months while I worked at CompUSA, I was basically a paid statue. I kid you not.
At the time, I was their front door greeter / security guard. But they kept changing the rules I had to follow as far as security checks. There was one point in which I literally couldn't do anything besides look scary.
Let that sink in now. Standing, at a door, not even being able to stop people, for 8 hours a day. The biggest annoyance was that I had no place to put my hands, because I wasn't allowed to keep them in my pockets.
Now I work in a bookies where my days have been 11am-10pm but from september we go to 6:30pm close.
Hallejulah.
I still say that them should just grabed a cardbored cut out of MR Clean, and then put his cloathes on it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
oh well, my job actualy starts to day <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> (aka I get to sell stuff, and hopefuly be actualy trained on the products we cary now)
//shudders
I work in a supermarket on weekends. This might not sound so bad, except that the hours suck. 5 AM to 9 AM, saturday and sunday. I will admit that the job is not hard in the slightest and nor are the hours mindsloggingly long. A trained monkey could do it. But combined with crappy hours that keep spoiling the circadian rythym, combine it with an education (OMGZ!! HE CAN THINKZ!!!) and a stuffed up sleep and it all amounts to disaster.
Then of course theres the manager always pushing.
"Twelve Aisles? Is THAT ALL?!", "You need to work faster, this is a business not a charity" etc etc. Of course, 12 Aisles is more then half the store, and this particular occassion was one when only two (2) people rocked up, me, and another. Normally it takes 6 people to face the store properly in 4 hours (because nobody seems to touch them on friday night, leaving them to decay).
Stocktake is a nightmare. Enough said.
{Sigh}
Hopefully I'll be able to get a job in Morgan Polysoft sooner or later. A man can dream... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Mid level management does that crap all the time. They try to squeeze as much work out of a person as they can with the least amount of cost. You could have done the whole store in half an hour & he would still have complained. Mid-level management by design is never satisfied. They always have a bonus to look out for..which by the way is bound to be dependent on them getting you to work even more. Thier superiors look down upon them as they look down on you. Upper level management sees mid-level management as peons...mid-level managemnt sees you as a peon. To be used, to be abused, to be exploited as much as possible with the least amount of cost.

Radioshack does their own inventory?
A lot of the huge stores like Target, Walmart etc use those big inventory companies. They come in with ahuge team of people and do the whole store in a day.
Although that's because they don't trust us to do it properley <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
