Music To Make Maps To

<div class="IPBDescription">Move me if I'm in the wrong place</div> We all know that good mappers are genii with brains capable of telekinesis if provoked. We enjoy stimulating our ultra-developed minds through mapping amongst other things. When you think about it we are all a sort of artist, an architect, builder and even virtual carpenter. We spend long hours drawing conceptual designs, manipulating vertices, alligning textures, positioning light sources (the list goes on...).

My question is:
What do we all do to help us through those long hours?

Some may stick on the radio Xfm in London and online has some good slots, and I know my brother listens to MegaRock via WinAmp. Personally I have a few days worth of music to listen to and I like to keep it varied.

If anyone has any particularly effective mapping music or other source of entertainment/stimulation post it here so we can all knuckle down and churn out those beauties!

Well I like trance mostly. Something high energy and to keep my spirits up especially when I'm trying to figure something out on my own.

I listen to XTC Radio, ETS Global, and RaveTrax radio on Shoutcast. All live sets. I also listen to a bit of Sleater Kinney or Le Tigre.. maybe some Ladytron

Current favorite while making ns_flint is We Want Your Soul by Adam Freeland. I was gonna include it as an easter egg, but the song is just too long(maybe someone can help me chop it up)

Oh and listening to my David Cross CDs

At the moment I'm listening mostly to Muse, Franz Ferdinand and Scissor Sisters whilst I map.

Whenever i do get around to mapping, i generally leave my winamp on with a random playlist. Sometimes i have <a href='http://www.happyhardcore.com' target='_blank'>happyhardcore.com</a>'s internet radio playing. Depends if i'm hung over or not, Hardcore's not really that great to listen to with a headache, heh.

Heavy metal/thrash. Iron Maiden, Dimmu Borgir, Megadeth, Manowar, Dio, Finntroll, Kamelot, Metallica, etc etc. Usually gets me into mood for mapping, though I listen to this when I play games too <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah, I guess Muse, Korn and Rage Against The Machine . Also Slipknot sometimes. But then again, I also listen to Coldplay or even Keane while mapping D:

If you read the thread title you probably could have guessed that it was the kind of thread you've seen so many times before. In this case save yourself the hassle and don't read it, don't try and be pseudo-clever by telling us (or me) you've seen it all before because (see the point I've just made) you come out looking silly.

My second problem with that comment is that it seems a very antisocial view to take. Just because someone has been asked the question before it doesn't mean that they haven't got something different to say. If we all did keep listening to the same music or have the same views <b>all</b> of the time we would be incredibly boring people.

If someone went to see a film in the cinema twice I might ask whether they still liked/or disliked the film the second time round (assuming that I had asked their opinion in the first place). This, Mr. Robot, is because we have things called emotions which do not follow a constant path.

If I am to assume that you read the first post of the thread, (since I am new to <i>this</i> forum I cannot expect that this is the custom here), you will know that I wasn't asking for informative titbits regarding how many people had posted this before, I was asking... well read the first post! If other topics of discussion arise that tangent off from posts that answer the query then so be it, but your post did not. End of story.

If you would like to post something about what music you listen to etc. then please do, I'll be happy to read it.

You might find its "tidbits" not "titbits". Oh and yeah, so anti-social, so anti-social I don't take the time to reply. Think before you speak.

ALTHOUGH if you really are interested, I've been listening to the same albums over the past however many months I've been mapping, All Thursday, Trapt, Muse, Story of The Year albums.

personally Im a big rock, metal, alternate, trance, etc. fan (there are only a few styles I DONT like).
    but when mapping this all doesnt really help <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
but stop. there is another style. its called "ambient". and thats what eats time. "what, te day isover? well I mapped for... *looks at a watch* oh... 14hours ^^?."
with ambient music, most likely the alien trilogy soundtrack (some really creeping songs) and the "parasite eve 2"-ost from naoshi mizuta, maybe some frightening files from "final fantasy the movie" I can map for hours without noticing anything.
take an advice: to set winamp on shuffle is not a good thing. you should "use" one style, depending on WHAT you are working. maybe for an hive area you will get better ideas listening to some creepy songs, while when working on a part of the marinebase some military tune would be fitting.
its really amazing how you work changes when listening to different music, watch yourself. when do you get the best results? the music should get you into a special mood. it works fine for me. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Thursday, your reply was antisocial in content, as I explained. You cannot claim that you are being social by replying if it is only to make an antisocial remark.

Secondly if your oneupmanship has been reduced to finding grammatical errors in my posts to support an argument I think you need to take a little more time checking your own posts to make sure they're <b>FULL PROOF</b>.

In reference to Lt. Gravity's comment if you like ambient music check out some (if not all) of the following:

    FourTet
    Boards of Canada
    Acid Mothers Temple
    FortDax
    Massive Attack

P.S. Some Acid Mothers Temple tracks are over 30mins long! Kinda trippy tho...

Lol, I just listened to whatever was playing on one of the radios hosted by happyhardcore.com ..... its just too much for me. I've always had this problem with anything purely instrumental done at that kind of beat speed. I just can't process the sound well enough I guess, it gets kind of annoying and distracting. No offense meant to anyone who likes it, just not for me.

Usually I listen to stuff like rage against the machine, audioslave, metallica, slipknot, and eventually end up with whatever crap my girlfriend has downloaded. Kind of strange getting hit with dido or something while i'm mapping, but every once in a while she hits something good and I have to think about whether or not I downloaded it.

I listen to metal, nowadays I'm mostly listening to Killswitch Engage, Meshuggah, Beyond the Embrace, Scars of Tommorow or Fear Factory. I just load the CD into winamp, have never had good luck with online radio stations.

Me? I put on some trance. When I'm mapping, I tend to put on some Paul van Dyk livesets. (I play them at full volume in my car too <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).

On the other hand, when I'm actually playing NS, I like to have the Lord of the Rings sountrack on.

Well I like quite a few genres, and only really dislike most R&B (as opposed to Rhythm and Blues), most (NewSkool) Hip-Hop and most Love Ballads.

I like ambient, blues, breakbeat, chillout, drum 'n' bass, electronica, heavy metal, hip-hop <i>(old skool mostly, but I still like Dre, Snoop, DMX etc.)</i>, jazz, metal, punk, reggae, rock, rock 'n' roll, ska, trip-hop and turntablism <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> If anyone wants to 'procure' some good music from any of these genres I could suggest some artists to look into.

As long as it's good I don't mind what I listen to because I concentrate so hard when mapping I can barely remember what the last song was sometimes.

Anywho, I just finished a nice corridor template that I need to start putting in my map. However nobody's been able to answer my question about MarineStarts and Hives in the <i>Mapping Help and Troubleshooting</i> forum <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Two months ago somebody said in Screenshot thread that my map looks like LSD trip. I think, the reason is in music witch I heard to during mapping.
