So I was thinking of buying a new mp3 player, since
my old 64 meg one siply doesn't cut it (and never did really).
I was thinking something hdd based like that new Ipod mini,
but those creative ones look fairly attractive too.
I could use some suggestionts, but remember, I'm poor.
So fairly reasonabe prised ones.

Something can be 100 bucks and not worth it, while something 400 bucks can be worth every buck and more.
What exactly are you looking for, size-wize, capacity-wize and price-range (or price/space)
No more than 280-300 euros. And 2 gigs at the very least seems a
reasonable request. Size isn't really that important, as long as it fits
into my pocket its fine.
It also needs to be easy to use, and
I dont just mean big buttons. Something like what the
4th gen ipods have got, this round ball-type thingy to scroll
through songs.
This all pretty much sounds like the IPod mini, but I just have
some doubts buyind the thing, since I've almost heard nothing
at all about it.
My cd mp3 player is on its last legs and I'm thinking of getting a shiny new player. I'm looking for something with ~30-40Gb storage, at a price that's as low as possiblw while not getting me a heap of junk. Features aren't massively important so long as it's easy to find the songs I'm looking for.
May be a personal thing, though; I hate earbuds because they're hard to fumble with on the subway whereas the regular phones are easy to put on and carry.
Edit :: Price was about $200

Where can you get new batteries for it? The battery on my Creative Zen NX is kaput and I have no idea where to get a new one.
Until the battery dies in it.
Check it out <a href='http://www.iriver.com' target='_blank'>http://www.iriver.com</a>
If you want massive mp3 players (>10Gb), go for the iAudio M3. Better value for money than an iPod in terms of functionality. Has radio, voice and recording features. Its also slight smaller than and iPod. Only downside is that there is no LCD screen on the main player. Everthing is controlled via a LCD remote. Software Interface is a bit klunky and clumsy to control also.

If you were trying to decide between a 4th Gen iPod and the M3, I would say you essentially be playing more for the iPod because of its design and better software interface but not functionality.
I know these stuff cos I am an avid mp3 player fan <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->. My first player was the Nomad. That got lost and I got the Nomad II. That got spoilt by a fren. Then had to find an iRiver for that same fren. And now I got myself an M3 while I am still searching for a cheap 4th Gen iPod for that same fren as well. ;p

How is the sound quality on that thing? I learned the hard way that not all mp3 players are created equal in that category.
If I were you I'd go for an iPod (I have a G3 and it's sweet) or the iAudio M3.
However I think the iPod is the way to go in ease of use (and occasional solitaire <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
4GB still isn't enough for me. I carry around DVD movies and game images.
You could, however, go for a laptop-sized hard drive (2.5") and put it in one of those USB boxes for file transport. That's, what, a hundred bucks for a 60 or so?
edit: COUPLE hundred *

Sound quality is mainly down to the headphones in regards to the Zen. The packaged headphones are alright, but you'll get much better sound from higher quality merchandise.
if you want value per dollar, I think they're way more economical than HD based ones...
I mean, you can get one for 50 frickin' bucks, can't beat that.
on the subject of MP3-CD players, has anyone invented an MP3-CD-DVD player yet? with all the MP3s you could fit on a DVD, that's what I'd upgrade to next if it existed (and it was cheap) =P
Ummm....Apple charges $50 also....
I got my 40Gb model for £160 wholesale (some guy had about 60 of them) from Ebay.
its a large, solid and reasonably priced alternative to the iPod, thought slightly bulkier (nothing your pocket cant handle).
I have freinds with 20 and 40Gb iRivers, and they are supposed to be good, better features (record from mic/ radio direct to .mp3, instant conectivity to XP systems [my Zen needs an installation CD to work which kind of sucks]).
So if you can afford it I would go for the iRiver first, and if your on a tighter budget, go for the Creative Zen.
Nomad: Kinda big, especially since I have small hands. Nice big lit display... the way it organizes files is kind of annoying, and you can't edit playlists on the go and stuff. It's good if you want to cart along 30 gigs worth of stuff. Control scheme is mildly annoying and not terribly convenient. Good player for the money though.
iPod: I have NOTHING bad to say about it. It's awesome awesome awesome, BUT it's only 4 gigs and I haven't tested the battery life extensively. The control layout is absolutely perfect to me, the size is fabulous, etc. etc, very well lit display, actually has extras like games and calendar and such. Con is the ludicrous price, but the size and ease of use made it worth the money to me. Playlist on the go feature is great too. And you can replace the battery for $50 btw. ^^
I realy want to go with the iPod (especialy b/c I think Radio shack is about to start carying them, and a %10 discount would be sweet)
HOWEVER, the battery thing is realy bugging me....
The Apple battery program is STILL $99 (so says their site)
you can BUY iPod batteries from other companies (http://ipodbattery.com/), and those range from 29 - 49, however you have to crack the case your self (A doable job, but still dangerous)
I also realy just don't like the designe of ANY other MP3 player out there atm......
However the battery thing still REALY irks me.
However you can also change it yourself and it comes in "kits" with tools that help you open it.
More and more players come with integrated batteries, especially with the race to be smaller and smaller. The iPod, while it may have gotten a bad reputation by being the first, but it's certainly not the only one anymore.

my sources say differently <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
but the Asono one seems very good too.
Pros on the sound hub are 4x the memory,
widely available here in finland and also
it seems to be cheaper.
Problem is, yet again, I've never heard of it.
*edit* 370 euros = lewse
