The main difference between a clan and a guild is the focus of their games.
Clans generally gravitate towards skill based games. Games with anonymity, (I.E. you can change your name at will, thus the clan tag) and games with little impact of a permanent nature. Guilds gravitate towards the more roleplaying side of things, where building a character matters more then skill involved in playing. Planetside as an example, or SWG. Also, guilds are generally on games that don't allow a change in your main name (Again, planetside) but allow seperate tags.
Oh really because I've heard of guilds long before stupid mmorpgs came along. There were tons of quake ones. AQ2 had like a dozen skill and hanging around guilds.
OldF is a guild. COFR is arguably a guild. TSA is pretty much a guild. Regardless, though, it's always good to see another NS oriented group come along.
Edit: AQ2... wow talk about nostalgia. Bunnyhopping handcannon for the win!
A guild is a group of people who have mastered a specific type of weapon. Generally, a guild will form around hard-to-use weapons. Guilds are not clans, so players can be in a clan and a guild, but does not have to be in a clan. The guild tag traditionally goes at the end of the name ([CLAN]NSPlayer|Guild). I suppose it's technically possible for a player to be in more than one guild.
In Natural Selection, the Knife and the Pistol seem like the only marine weapons worthy of a guild. On the alien side, I would place hard-to-master alien lifeforms as guilds, such as a Fade guild, or a Lerk guild. A Battle-Gorge guild could be viable as well.
A guild is people who are good at a certain class/weapon/subset of the game. For example in TFC there were guilds for each class in TFC (soldier guilds, demoman guilds, medic guilds, light offense guilds (medic and scout combined), etc). A player can be in multiple guilds but not for the same thing. For example I could be in a medic guild and a soldier guild but not 2 soldier guilds at once. In NS, if there were guilds like in TFC, I'd suppose that they would be based on alien lifeforms (not gorge, onos or lerk, imo those don't take much skill). Skulk guilds, fade guilds, marine guilds and comm guilds are probably the only 4 you could have... Unless you want to break down marines into weapons LMG/Shotty/HMG, but that's just stupid <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As Bob said, nice to see another group, except this time they seem less towards getting new players/helping new players, and this may be the first almost totally based on upping skill.
I'm goin to start a guild called s#cri.pts , whos sole purpose is to play NS with an inhumane amout of scripts, that allow us to fall alseep at the keboard and still win all the time <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
