Video Card Survey

I thought I'd do a little survey, just to see the results. It's about video cards.

1. What video card do you currently use? With how much RAM?

2. What driver version are you using? Why? Are you using Omega drivers or other modded drivers? Why?

3. What games do you currently play?

4. Are you satisfied with your video card?

5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?

6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?

7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?

8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?

9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?

10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?

Please, give serious answers only.

My answers:

QUOTE

1. What video card do you currently use? With how much RAM?
ATI Radeon 9000 128 MB

2. What driver version are you using? Why? Are you using Omega drivers or other modded drivers? Why?
Catalyst 4.9 beta, because I was trying to boost performance in DOOM 3.

3. What games do you currently play?
Half-Life mods, Savage: The Battle for Newerth, StepMania, Final Fantasy VII, Halo.

4. Are you satisfied with your video card?
Yeah, but it's starting to show its age.

5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?
Yeah. I've already got a Radeon 9600 Pro, I need a new motherboard before I can install it.

6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?
Yeah. I like ATI's performance in comparison to image quality, and their drivers are great.

7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
I haven't bought many video cards, but I can't really go over $300 CDN.

8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?
I'm not sure at all. ATI, maybe.

9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?
Not that I can think of... A way to control the FPS threshold for temporal AA might be nice.

10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?
Nope.

    1. GeForce MX 400 with 64MB RAM

    2. Driver version is 6.1.7.7. Why? Because they're supposed to be the latest Nvidia edition. No Omega or other modded drivers.

    3. Clonk, Avp2, Fallout 2

    4. Mainly, yes.

    5. Definitely.

    6. I'll probably go for an ATI card, since so many people say that they're better, despite the numerous errors reported. And the fact that ATI cards have better benchmarks.

    7. When I'll be getting a new computer, I'll go for the latest and the best, that is - PCI Express. No idea about the costs yet.

    8. Don't know, but seems like ATI will come out on top again.

    9. My older card had wonderful bump-mapping, which this card lacks, but I doubt I really miss it that much.

    10. None, except a faulty fan.

    1. What video card do you currently use? With how much RAM?
Built By ATi Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB

    2. What driver version are you using? Why? Are you using Omega drivers or other modded drivers? Why?
Catalyst 4.8, official. I don't trust the omega drivers... if ATi intended for the tweaks to be in, they would have already tossed 'em into the official. You'll either lose image quality, speed, or stability.

    3. What games do you currently play?
NS, SORM: MP Beta, Axis & Allies Beta, CS:S, Doom3, F-Zero GX, Midnight Club... oh, computer games? Right.

    4. Are you satisfied with your video card?
Definitely. It was the best $200 I have shelled out yet. Getting a little on the slow side for new games, but it was worth every penny.

    5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?
Define 'near future' as 'when I have the money', and the answer will be yes.

    6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?
Yes. Built By ATi cards haven't done me wrong, they integrate smoothly, and the only problem with them is that you have to uninstall the control panel (not neccessarily the video drivers, though it's a good idea) before installing the new drivers.

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
$200-500. Lower ends up with crappy performance, and it isn't worth buying one.

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?
ATi. I've discussed with one of their developers, and their next card will blow the hell out of even the X800 XTPE.
That or possibly the Kyro5, if they ever get a fabricator and bring it to market without nVidia smearing them... again.

    9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?
No. PS3.0 is overrated, as no games actually use it yet. By the time games come out which do, there will be faster cards available on the market than current-gen.

    10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?
Aging card, no hardware issues. Just getting slow compared to the relative speed when I first bought it. Rock-solid performance.

    1. 9800pro with 128 MB ram.

    2. 4.2's with the atioglxx.dll(openGL) from the 3.8's(for HL I find this to be one of the nicest versions, I get absolutely no stutter, silky smooth. going a bit off topic for a sec. If you are using an USB mouse it will use a pretty poor refresh rate(125 Hz), if the mouse came with a USB->PS/2 converter, use it and then crank the mouse refresh rate to 200 Hz, it makes a big difference towards reducing visible stuttering in games IMHO( I've done this on 2 computers and seen a VERY noticable difference in smoothness, even if you are no where near 125 FPS with vsync). Don't use mouse-filter to fix it, if you are using "the twitch" technique for aiming it will make you miss badly due to mouse lag.)

    3. Science and industry, NS, TFC, I'm going to get back to DOD, HLDM, star craft/war craft 2(just on a LAN with friends) and such eventually. I go in this big loop with my favorite games. I played far cry recently, it ran very nicely.

    4. Sure.

    5. Not really.

    6. Even if I was, no not really, I don't play favorites. Right now I'd lean towards ATi.

    7. Not relevant, if it's something within my budget and I feel it's defently worth it I will go for it. I typically don't consider the very highest end worth it.

    8. I don't, much of the information that filters down to me and everyone else not directly involved is quite well watered down. NV30 was going to blow everything out of the water and have amazing shader performance, well it wasn't a total failure, it blew allright, like a freaking leaf blower.

    9. Native support for stereo 3d with LCD shutter glasses. edit: SSAA would be nice for those old games. It can do it, the mac version allready does, but it's not turned on in the PC driver. Why? Because then people would try to pull a fast one and benchmark the card with 4x SSAA and say "holy hell, nvidia totally beats the snot out of ATi!!111" just as some reviewers have done for nVidia with their latests crop of cards. MSAA simply doesn't remove aliasing on alpha test rendered objects, while SSAA does, MSAA AA's only edges, SSAA is wastefull but AA's everything.

    10. No it does pretty much everything I ask of it, and it's virtually silent(it uses one of those massive DHES heat sinks that directly exhaust air through the adjacent PCI slot, it's a design similar to the nv30 leaf blower but it only needs to do the jobb of the dinky little 9800pro heat sink it replaces, not cool a card so I'll concieved that they had to clock the hell out of it and still couldn't compete.

    1. What video card do you currently use? With how much RAM?

Nvidia Geforce 2 mx 400. 64mb ram i would assume

    2. What driver version are you using? Why? Are you using Omega drivers or other modded drivers? Why?

61.77. Because i like to have the latest ones.

    3. What games do you currently play?

Half-life mods, especially the lower-graphics one. This will change when i get my new computer.

    4. Are you satisfied with your video card?

Nope. Not in the least, it and my computer are outdated [600mhz athlon]

    5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?

Yes. I have already purchased a radeon 9800 pro 128mb, and am waiting for my new computer to come so i can put it in that.

    6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?

I will go with ATI [instead of NVIDIA], mostly because I looked at all the cards in my price range and what I wanted, and found that ATI was clearly more capable to give me what I wanted with this card.

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?

I try to stay in under $AUD400, But it depends on how much money i have [note: im broke]. I don't think i would spend much more than around $600-700 [australian]

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?

ATI. It seems that they've just been doing better and better, with more solid, stable, performance-winning cards, and NVIDIA is scraping the barrel and coming out with second-bests.

    9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?

I don't get involved with drivers much. I just choose the latest one because I assume it must be able to better handle my video card and performance.

    10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?

    It is very outdated.

    Edit: Put in bold.

Probably not until the X800's drop in price.

    Yeah, definately, ATI > Nvidia.

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
Around the £100 mark. Never the top end because they're always extortionate, and never the low end because you get what you pay for (EG: POS FX5200).

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?

    Half-Life with Mods
    Doom3
    Call of Duty

    5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?
    No not very soon.

    6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?
Propably Yes. NVidia has always produced nice and stable chips.

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
    Up to 150€ = approx. 183US$

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?
ATI. Maybe if the new Geforce 6600s provide enough power, they can gain more market power, but as of now the ATI produces more power at a lower price.

NS, WC3, SC (okay not graphics intensive...) AvP2, Ground Control 2....not much mroe than that....

    5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?
    Definitely.

    6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?
No, because Talesin has convinced me enough to switch to ATi.

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
Around HKD$500-HKD$1500. It's hard to find a good card in that range though.

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?
    I'm going with ATi.

    9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?
Not as much of drivers as much as the card does. It limits a few things like....bumpmapping and stuff....

    10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?
It artifacts a lot when I set it to High Performance. Other than that it quite satisfies my needs with the games I play ATM....

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?

Expensive class, I have this problem that I cant wait for prices to go down, only with vidcards btw

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?

If things continue like this ATI will be on top. But since the REAL next-gen cards aren't out yet this is just guessing.

    9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?

    It can't bake cookies

    10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?

Fogotten hope modification has some shadow issues looking towards buildings. If I'm to far away I can't see into buildings due to the total blackout of the window. Only when I can get to a certain distance I can look inside and see the enemies. Makes it very dangerous when approaching a building :\

    1. MSI 9800 PRO 128mb overclocked

    2. ATI Catalyst 4.8 or 4.9

    3. DooM 3, World of Warcraft Stress beta, Counter-Strike, NS

    4. For the most part I am very satisfied.

    5. I'd get a new card in maybe 2 years.

    6. I'd go with ATI because I'm not going to get a new mobo just for the PCI Express

    7. Around $200- $300

    8. I'd say Nvidia if thier PCI Express cards have economically sane prices and the mobos that support them are not crasy either.

    1. What video card do you currently use? With how much RAM?
I have a Radeon 9600XT 256MB on my desktop computer and a Radeon 9000 128MBMobility on the laptop. However I mainly use my laptop since thats all I have here at college.

    2. What driver version are you using? Why? Are you using Omega drivers or other modded drivers? Why?
I used the latest catalysts on my desktop and I use Omega drivers on my laptop just because the catalysts will not install on Mobility cards.

    3. What games do you currently play?
Doom3, Battlefield 1942 (mods), Dawn of War

    4. Are you satisfied with your video card?
9600XT: I bought it this summer as a sort of good but low budget card and I was very impressed, I'm getting great FPS in Doom3. So yeah thumbs up. On the other end my 9000 Mobility couldn't be worse for games of our age.

    5. Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?
    Not really.

    6. If so, will you stay with the company that has designed your current video card? Why or why not?
If I do I'll see what's available when I get it but right now I've pretty much been sticking with ATI.

    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
    under $300

    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?
    ATI

    9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?
Maybe something to make my 9000 Mobility not suck so bad, but other than that I can't think of anything!

    10. Are you having any major issues with your video card, at the moment?
    Nope.

Don't know exact number, Omegas. Thought they might fix a crashing problem in Call of Duty whenever there was a lot of dynamic lighting action (fire), it didn't.

What games do you currently play?
    NS, Stepmania, MAME

Are you satisfied with your video card?
I would have liked more for the price I had paid at the time (200 just when 9800 XT was hitting shelves), but it does its job well.

Are you planning on upgrading your video card in the near future?
Not until PCIe comes around mainstream, and then I'll be upgrading to 64 bit as well.

    32MB ATI Radeon VE/7000 series

Not entirely sure on the drivers.

Games I play are mainly HL + other mods. If I ever get around to it, I'd download Tribes 2 again.

Not really happy with it. It's pretty damn ancient now.

Not upgrading until I get the cash to do so.

I'll be getting an ATI card when I do, though. They just seem much better when it comes to performance (based on other user's opinions and general benchmarks)

I dunno about price. Whatever I can affors I guess.

ATI will probably be on top.

Most things games require these days are missing. Like pixel shaders.

Major issues? Full screen has a tendency to crash my machine. So I can only play windowed things unless I want to reboot every time I get the urge to play something. It's annoyingly...annoying.

Newest Nvidias, because Doom3 told me to. Although i really dont like loading up on the dozens of megabytes of features that the geforce3 doesnt support. Nvidia desparately needs to release a driver line for each card generation to prevent the immense bloat theyve gotten into.

    3. What games do you currently play?

Nvidias have linux drivers. Ati has the price/Performance ratio. its a tough call i will make when i get there.
    7. When you're looking to buy a video card, what price range do you try to stay in?
i spent 90$ on a processor, and 90$ on a motherboard, why on earth would i even look at all those 500$ videocards? who the hell has that much pocketchange for videogaming performance?! you kids need to get a job and realize that 500$ is a lot of money. I'd buy a card at about 150$ as thats what my gf3 cost new.
    8. Being as unbiased as possible, what company can you see coming out on top by the end of the 2004?
Ati seems to be kickin it, but nvidia still has a large OEM marketshare. ATI will win in gamers eyes, and that i think is what youre asking.

    9. Is there a particular feature missing from your video card's drivers that you would like to see?

    5. Yes
    6. Yes, ATi seem to have the leading technology across many more games where as Nvidia shaders have to be specific in games.

    7. £0-£200, Generally speaking up to £100 is the best budget although I don't mind going higher.

    8. ATi because of the supposed better performance with Half-Life 2.

    9. BIOS capabilities to improve the graphics/performance of newer games, if only that was possible for the Radeon 9200. Its nice to wish and dream. And ability to disable AA and Anisoptoric Filtering by default rather than run it at 2x at least.
