Possible Fps Bug? + Brightness Problem

p3 800
geforce2 mx400
running on win98se
have tried both 640x and 800x res

I've had what I believe could be a bug overlooked thinking it was part of the server lag that was greatly reduced over the last few days.

When I run NS, I get around 10 fps. Whenever I run other HL mods I get much higher FPS which I capped at 60. (CS 80-90 uncapped, DoD 70-80 uncapped; both at 1024x resolution)

I've searched around for some variable which could fix this and couldn't find any that works. The reason I ruled out hardware limitation was in the 30-40 times or so I've tried NS, 2 times exactly it ran at 60fps. The second time it ran at 60fps was when I joined late game as aliens and there were turrets all around the map, leading me to believe it's a setting or a bug and not my hardware limit. (Even from the readyroom it ran at 60fps those 2 times)

I've searched this forum and came up with this post.

<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=18&t=7790&hl=framerate' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...90&hl=framerate</a>

Foxdie's problem seems to be the same one as mine. All the other FPS threads were about people with computers like p2 400 tnt2 trying to juice extra FPS out through configs.

I can't think of any unique reason why I got 60FPS on those 2 times. It was on 2 different servers. 1st being a private one just to check the game out with some friends right after it came out. 2nd on a public server 16/16 players. In fact after playing for about 10 minutes, thinking maybe the server side patch was the fix to the problem to my FPS, I rejoined the server only to get 10 FPS again.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has the same problem and if anyone found a fix to it.

The 2nd problem I have isn't as bad. Everytime I join a game or the map loads, my brightness gets changed. Whenever I exit out of the game, it resets back to my normal brightness. The fix for this I've been using is, after joining a game, I need to alt+tab out and go to my properties of my video card and adjust my brightness. Whenever I exit and rejoin a game or even when the map changes on the server I am playing in, I need to alt+tab and fix my brightness again. Not as bad as my FPS problem, but it is a hassle to keep adjusting my brightness.

Anyone know of any possible fix for these problems? I did find something interesting which might explain a bit of my FPS problem. Something about trying to play NS with sound disabled? I am using onboard sound but do not know how to disable sound. I'm trying to rule out any and all possiblities.

And yes, I'm using recent drivers except the nvidia detonator because the newest one didn't work well, but the one I'm using is less than 6 months old. Plus an older 4 in 1 driver because it seems all the new ones are crap.

All I can do now is build as humans. I can't even kill with 10fps so I don't even try. And I'm getting sick of playing as bait/builder only.

This isn't a bug, it's a feature. It's called gamma ramping or some such, and most of the recent releases (Q3, UT) use it to brighten colors and such, and give maps a much more vibrant feel. NS had to make it's own, seperate from HL, just to get it to work.

There's a gamma configuration program that comes with NS that should fix anything that looks too weird, if it's brightening too much or something.

As for your FPS problems... have you checked to see if they're map specific?

The FPS problem happens on all maps.

Something interesting happened while talking to a couple of guys in nshelp. I was able to recreate the 60fps a few more times. This time was when I created my own LAN game. I went through a couple of the maps and I tried in both 640x and 800x res.

A couple of times, the game would start in the ready room with 60 fps. I would join either alien or human, and continue to get 60 fps. A couple of times, the game would start in the ready room at 10 fps. I would join either alien or human, and continue to get 10 fps. Now this was the interesting one. A couple of times, the game would start in the ready room with 60 fps. But once I joined a team, it would go down to 10 fps. Even when I click my way back into the ready room, it would be stuck at 10 fps.

I'm not too familar with the map names, but couple of the maps I tried were nancy, bast, and eclipse. It didn't seem to matter which map was on. A couple of times when I got the 60fps, I could see at certain sections of the map my FPS taking a hit. This meaning if the game was working properly, I should be getting around 50-70 fps, and not the 10 fps I'm getting now.

I have been suggested to try a reinstall. I'll try that, but I deleted the install file so instead of DLing the 100 meg file again, if possible I'd like to find another fix first.
