Linux Install

Why isn't there one? Lots of people play Half Life and it's mods on Linux thanks to WINE and its variants. I myself play NS and lots of other HL mods on Linux. The only thing that you would need to do to make a "Linux install" is install natural selection in a clean directory, tar/zip/gunzip it and upload it somewhere.

If the NS people are willing to support this, I'd be glad to provide a mirror for a NS Linux install. Lots of people on linux are having problems running the installer through WINE as it freezes and gives other problems. So, this is justified.

And please no flames about how half life is "Windows only" because there are many Windows games and applications that native Linux users are running on Linux these days.

It's not a bad idea 1stStrike. If nothing else comes of it (although I can't see why we couldn't have a tar'd version somewhere), if someone posts a tar'd install I'll mirror it for you guys, just to download it.....

    *Quick fumbling with directories*

    <a href='http://mirror.playzen.net/halflife/modifications/naturalselection/client/linux/' target='_blank'>.....here?</a>

I'll be uploading mine sometime today and then I'll post my link to the mirror. It's up to the NS people if they want to add it as a mirror or not.

    Here you go.

    <a href='http://ssihosting.com/nsp.tar.bz2' target='_blank'>Fully updated natural selection 3.0 beta 4a for Linux</a>

Mirror this if you like. Hopefully some other people will and we can get this on the front page for other Linux users.

This thread should be sticked. Or at least put in the downloads section.

I love Linux, there SHOULD be a Linux NS install.

Whoa, whoa...steam works on linux again?!

Can someone give (or link) to step by step instructions to get steam + ns working in linux?

I run it through cedega 4.01 (formally known as WineX). It's not free. The program costs $5 a month. However, the way I see it is I get to play all my Windows games on a better and more stable OS. So, to me it's very much worth it.

    You get the program from
<a href='http://www.transgaming.com' target='_blank'>here</a> (you naturally have to pay the subscription fee first).

It's really easy to install, so I'm not going over that. Besides, they have their own FAQ for that.

To install the "linux install" for natural selection that I provided, you extract the directory into the fake C: drive for steam that cedega creates. It's a hidden folder in your home directory called .point2play. It'll be something along the lines of this: file:/home/user/.point2play/Steam/c_drive/Program Files/Valve/Steam/SteamApps/user/half-life

Just extract the nsp folder to the half-life directory. Start up steam, and it'll show up. You're all set.

I can play any half life mod like this. The only problems with most of them is their lack of a installer that works well with wine/cedega and no actual linux install.

    And, if you don't believe me here's a screenshot <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Great. I'll give it a go once I get my gentoo install back up (dahm j00, ReiserFS..)

btw, any glitches, graphical or otherwise when playing ns?

No glitches whatsoever. Half life and all it's mods run perfectly for me.

There's a screenshot. As you can see, it looks fine.

Any chance of doing this for beta 5, or does the new beta 5 install work ok with cedega/wine?

I'll upload it today and should have the link pasted by tomorrow.

1stStrike, a pleasure to mirror it, but I've renamed it to ensure it's clear what version it is (for if we get future ones)

<a href='http://mirror.playzen.net/halflife/modifications/naturalselection/client/linux/' target='_blank'>Mirror</a>, along with lots of other things.

Great work here guys, this does diserve a sticky. I may now be able to trash my lone existing wintel box, used only for playing NS.

    Thanks much,
