Ns Soldier And Equipements

<div class="IPBDescription">(what type of metal look suits best)</div> Hi, I want your opinion.

What type of metal is part of the soldier's armor and all the NS's equipements ?

Is it steel, stainless steel (don't think so), aluminum or plain ordinary metal ?

I'm experimenting with different materials for renderings and I don't know what type of metal was thought of for the several in-game metals when the NS textures were made.

Keep in mind that most in-game metals are dirty. Think of the metal as being clean and without dirt or scratches.

As I said, I'm only experimenting.

DEATHBRINGER wonders why do you think it has to be metal it could be some form advanced kevlar
  • mirrodinmirrodin Join Date: 2004-06-29 Member: 29621Members
Well it's awhile into the future, could be metal meshed with kevlar or some other combination. Kevlar nanites w00t!

Actually, a metal/ceramic mesh could very easily be a future armor. Certain ceramics are already being tested as armor plating in suits and on vehicles.

It aslo could be a silk-like substance; spider's silk is currently being tested as an armor as well.

I belive according to the NS story it is a plastic composite... I really have no idea what that means in the long run, it probably looks like cast/colored aluminum.

Spider silk is strong, but can be cut with a knife. So i dobut it would make good armor.

Spider silk can only be cut with a knife because it is increadibly thin. The samuri used to use silk (worm silk is weaker than spider silk FYI) as an armor because if you were shot by an arrow it wouldn't pierce through, so the arrows were really easy to remove from the wounds. Of course they also made swords that would split silk like butter, but that is a different story all together.

    a) kevlar armor won't stop a knife either
    b) spider silk would make outstanding armor. Too bad it can't be harvested very well (they're experimenting with using goats as the carrier of some of the proteins or something like that, so it can be more easily harvested.... goatsilk I guess, lol)

Nope - he's right. It's actually a practical method of making large quantities of silk.

it just is. something very wrong about having goats being able to manufacture spider silk... sorry. but no more on it, OT threads = locksors... :x

I would venture the armor is made of some kind of hard rubber, just like football armor. Possibly ceramic. It just doesn't feel metally to me... especially not shiny.

Advanced Composites/polymers/ceramics if you want to be uber realistic

Goatsilk/Spidersilk/Carbon Nano-tubes if you want to be realistic and 40 years in the future or so

    If you simply don't care, then you have fusion assisted nanites <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Lol @ the spider silk, as it's true. Mesh Spider Silk with Titanium Webbing and you'd have blade AND ballistic armor!

I read about the nanotubes. Supposedly one single tube (only a few molecules thick...thinner than human hair) can lift 25lbs.

P.S., The manufactured spidersilk is called BioSteel.

You guys are venturing into the future. It sounds interesting to know but I want to know from the game itself. If you look at the game, the way the armor/equipement textures are made, what type of metal would the NS developement team were thinking when they made them.

I have to stick to the NS game's environment.

you mean BuckyTubes? Yes, one of em can lift an INCREDIBLE ammount of weight for it's thickness... HUGE tensile streangth (I think around 1.57, where as TI-32 titanium only has a tensile streangth of about .674) and fair elongation... but it's a tad bit brittle when pused upon... it collapses easily from what I've heard

If you guys keep at it (and mind you, this must be some sadistic wedgy fetish you are living!) his chafing alone is going to spawn a whole range of the latest in combat armour.

A guys arriving in a new city stops by a taxi driver and ask "How can I get to 123 Adams street ?"

The taxi driver answers "Sur no problem, but you should watchout as there is alot of street construction."

The guy then asks "Yes but how do I go to 123 Adams street ?"

The taxi driver then replies "Easy, you just tune in to the radio station XYZ and your bound to relax"

The guy thinking this taxi driver doesn't realy care keeps driving and gets to a policeman. He then asks him "How do I get to 123 Adams street ? I'm new around here"

The policeman answers "Your new ? Then may I suggest you keep away from Square-Phillips as crime rate is high"

The guy replies thinking he won't get any good answers "Thanks for the advice but I realy need to get to 123 Adams street. I have an appointment in 15 minutes. So how do I get there ?"

The policeman then replies "You see that church on top of the hill ? Well you drive to it, turn right, then at the 4th light, you go left and streight for about 15 minutes. Then at the library you take highway-15 for about 30 minutes. This should take you outside of the city and safely on your way home. Have a nice day !"

As the policeman starts walking away, the guy gets angry and say "Ah fu.. I won't get any help around here. So I'll just give up and go back home."

    ** End of the story**

When you ask a question, you expect to get answers that stay in the topic of your question. Right ?

I was just gently reminding people to stay focused on the topic of my thread. Some others would use point blank comments.
