1 HMG, 2 men. When the first man falls…
Okay, to make a long story short, I join a server playing eclipse, 7 on 7. Aliens are undermanned, so join up. Marine commander is clearly a bit inexperienced, and I manage to slide past his defenses, park my skulky posterior behind the command console, and turn Mr. Commander in Kibbles and Bits. Game over, right? Or so you would think.
I joined up around midgame. Things seemed pretty even, though the marines may have had a bit of an edge until their command went down. They had one of our hives locked down, and turrets around half the resource nodes on the map. I expected the game to end pretty quickly after such a deadly blow. But soon afterwards several Kharaa players left, so that (for a few seconds anyway) it was 2 on 6 or so.
I tried to rush into their base and take out their infantry portals, but these, alas, WERE under cover of their turrets. Plus marines were spawning like Salmon, and there were always 2 or 3 in base loading up on ammo at any given time. It was just too much for a poor skulk to handle.
I let everyone else know that I had taken out their command chair, but I kept getting replied about things looking grim. And it was understandable, because marines were STILL pouring into the Triad Generator Room, HMGs and grenade launchers blaring.
Slowly it became apparent that their command WAS dead though. We were worried they might have another C&C in out hive, which they had locked down tightly. But no, they were simply following the Russian Provisioning Method. Two or three marines with heavy weapons, followed by three or four more crunchies waiting for them to buy the farm and grab their guns. I don?t think this was really intentional (because their teamwork SUCKED that round, and the next few I played) but it worked out surprisingly well. It was five or six minutes before the last HA lumbered into battle and was chewed up, and the heavy weapons lasted MUCH longer, almost to the end.
All and all it was a pretty exciting game. And despite their lack of teamwork, the marines manages to keep the fight going for QUITE some time, without new weapons or armor or provisions of any sort. Maybe the Russians had something going there?

usually if i die with an HMG i tell everyone where it's at, and tell them to rush towards it and get it. sometimes, if it's close to base, i do it myself... i dont even ammo up my LMG.
this are the marine tactics everyone needs to learn. don't EVERY let your HAs die (weld them and drop health if your commander), if heavy weapon carriers die, u rush towards it and pick it up.... stuff like that.
you'd be surprised how long LMG marines without HA and only a few HMGs that were thrown out will last if they just keep re-using the same 25 resources you used up 30 minutes ago... it really does add up.
Glad you wrote it up.
