Your best bet actually IS to kill them before they get to you. All skulks have is bite to attack with. Just check for ambushes and shoot at them as much as you can before they get right up close. If they do get close, jump sideways away from them and turn to shoot. Jumping sideways and turning is pretty good for anything.
When they are that close to you, both of you have to move your mouses around a lot to keep track of each other, so it's also a good idea to get some abstract 3-dimensional thinking while you play this game so you know which way to turn at any time, even if you lose sight of the skulk, like your own personal brain-radar. Since you both have to move the mouse so much, you can dodge pretty well up close too. You just need to learn to sidestep a lot. Sidestepping is key.
Dont shoot like a maniac. go for the kill shot.
avoid taking it on alone if you can avoid it.
strafe man strafe
catch it before it can catch you...grow eyes in the back of your head, and in your stomach, and in your toes, and on your ankles and on your...
Jump sideways if theres too little distance between you and the skulk
scream like a little girl
above all else always keep moving. a stationary marine looks like lunch to a skulk
practice practice practice and remember...there are lots of view options for you to enjoy while waiting to respawn!

Dont empty a whole clip into that single skulk, aim well and let him eat 10 bullet bursts.
When you can see him, but he doesnt seem to have recognized you just use the pistol.
When a skulk leaps at you duck quickly.
SG has a low ROF so its good to know when to shoot the skulk. When he is close shoot him. When he is far enough away to allow a second shot shoot him.
When he could reach you with leap on mid-range wait for him to come closer.
Dont get surprised by anything.
In CO look for a nice camping spot just outside your spawn and wait for the first 2 mins. There are many ppl out there who actually think that a skulk is some kind of tank. They will try to rush you but thanks to your superior position you will crush them.
If you are no good with the SG save points so you can switch to the hmg directly.
Turn around regularly.
Get a decent sound system which allows you to detect skulks precisly.
Download which bot and practice aiming and killing.
Thats all i can think of for the moment. Hopefully it helps you.

Unfortunately pistol shooting is based on FPS. So not everyone can just spam ten shots as easy as others. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
so if it gets close.. SWITCH. saves the bother to aim and prey.
All I can say is :
- Get a good pair of headphones. Not those single-channel ones (I made a mistake that had 2 R channels....)
- Practice your aim a bit more.
Fresh skulk meat for dinner.
[edit: But what I find works when you actually have to knife, you know, both weapons empty, is to crouch and hold still in one place. The complete lack of movement confuses skulks and they will often times jump past you and miss, giving you ample time to land in a few knife swipes.]
if your parasited you are going to be ambushed, stick with buddies and stay back.
FOR GOD SAKES MAKE SURE YOU USE A HEADSET. sound is such an important element in this game. it lets you know what is coming and where it is coming from.
use your walk key. dont be afraid to be sneaky <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
a fun thing to do with shotguns. since shooting down a hall isnt very productive witha shotgun, i often times wait for skulks to get close enough for a one shotgun blast kill (not always best) but its fun when you see skulks just sti there and stare at you, then charge and at the last second you blow them away. like they try to dodge you and stuff when your not shooting. silly skulklets.
alternatively, just do what i do and run in the opposite direction of where the rest of your team is going!!! <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Here are skulking characteristics that I've seen:
1) Straight charging skulk - Gun him down before he reaches you.
2) Jumpy skulk - This is tricky but aim at the center of his jump.
3) Jump + Turn-mid-air skulk - Much more tricky as the hitboxes change in mid-air while he is jumping by turning his model.
4) Bhop skulk - If you hear long intervals between jumps, keep a distance. Do some strafe work and hold your fire button down. Gun him down before he gets you.
5) Camping skulk - Look up and look up always (or look around and check rooms)
6) Wall-clinging skulk - A big flaw in HL engine. The hitboxes doesn't sync with the model. You must find the right spot to gun it down.
7) Attack + Wall-Cling Skulk - Best skulking tactic where a skulk will attack then cling to the wall. He repeatly do this to screw up his hitbox so it's hard for you to shoot him.
However, I have to say. A marine has only that much capabilities to evade. Once close ranged, a skulk has the upper hand. I can do 3 bites repeatly one after another and that's pretty deadly.
Knife is only good if you've done enuf damage to him or her to deliver the finishing blow. Mortal Kombat anyone?
Other than that, a skulk in the right player's hand can do a lot of damage to marines. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I got a few pure knife kills this way, yet tis rare.

Actually, it isn't.
Although someone with a higher FPS count will *appear* to unload ammo at a slightly faster rate, the actual shots fired is calculated server-side.
There's a bug tracker thread on this prompted by "a civilian"'s work investigating the problem.
(I have nothing to add to skulk evasion, but this was something that needed clearing up.)
basically imagine your lmg has completely no ammo and you only got you pistol and knife. if you really imagine yourself in this situation, it trains you not to waste and click ten times as fast as you can. instead, you would really try to shoot only when your crosshair is on the skulk, and pistol whip when he is trying to travel straight towards you.
also, if you look at an ns damage simulator, it only takes 3 hits with the pistol and a swipe from your knife to kill the skulk. after training a while with pistol and knife only, i have learnt that after you use up your ammo or when u have shot a few times and the skulk is already very near you, switching to knife and giving it one accurate swipe will most likely kill it.
this works much better (to me anyway) than to try to get two more shots at the skulk with pistol at close range.

Set your FPS max to five, then try to spam the pistol.
It will not work. It will shoot out slowly and you won't be able to empty your clip as fast as you could with 100 fps.
Knifing is hard to learn, because a big part of it is overcoming your fear of trying to kill a skulk when he's the guy with the big nasty teeth. Thankfully, there is CO now to train on. Another trick about the knife is learning how far out you slash with it, so you can kill skulks with just the tip of the knife, instead of getting so close that the skulk's face is all you see on your screen. If you attack with the knife the moment you possibly can, you have a better chance of reacting faster than the skulk can bite.
Another way to think about marine knifing is that when you take out your knife, you switch the way you should think about killing the enemy.
When you have a gun out, killing the other guy is all about moving away from him, avoiding him, but aiming and shooting at him until dead. When you pull your KNIFE out, killing the other guy is about putting on your demon face, grabbing your knife for the lunging overhand thrust, and STAB SLASH CUT that alien abomination into xenoburger. You have to be angry to knife. But on a technical level, knifing is a little bit like playing fade, without blink. You're a humanoid on two feet, you can't move very fast, but you can jump and duck and sidestep, and you have a really sharp object in your hand. To get the kill, you have to play just like you would play as an alien. That means running up, jumping at him, and bringing down the steel. In fact, it's a little easier to knife than it is to bite, since bite covers your whole screen up for a moment. So if the other guy is making nonstop biting noises, try to stay calm while you sidestep and dodge and when you see him screw up, charge him and cut the guy.
if your parasited you are going to be ambushed, stick with buddies and stay back.

I use my walk key all the time but when i turn and stuff it makes like a chingling noise (like keys) is only me that hears that, or enemies do to?
no bullets in your LMG, or very low ammo. Try just using your
pistol, or setting your LMG to semi-automatic (If it's even possible
now). Instead of jumping or moving around and panicking, stand
still, aim, and fire, once he gets too close, maybe jump forward
and strafe. What I usually do then is switch to pistol or knife...
PISTOL PISTOL PISTOL KNIFE!
circle strafe
As for being parasited, stock up on ammo then:
- Find a dead end (preferably long)
- Sit at the end of it
- Be vigilant
- Kill skulkies who try and charge you down
You'd be surprised at how many times a player will try and rush you before either giving up or succeeding. It takes at least 2 times (usually more) for most players to realise they're not going to win until you're outta ammo. If it's a good commander he'll thank you for all the res you've just earnt your team, rather than cursing you for 'ramboing'.
Then again I'll be the first to admit that this shouldn't be used in every situation. If your com needs players to set up a new base then find a quick way to die and go help where your more needed.
As for skulkies:
- Keep ears open
- Keep eyes open and crouch down sometimes to look for cloaked movement (if you suspect they have SCs) Most cloaked players are lazy and just cloak on the floor.
- Think about where you'd hide if you were a skulk.
- Think about where you'd hide if you were egging, check those spots (with a flashlight if neccessary)
If you have enough space between you and a skulk and have good timing I like to feign a step one way then circle strafe the other. Skulk flies past and you still have full health.
