This sounds similar to the problem I'm having too. I never associated it with moving between areas.

Symptoms:
The game controls are periodically unresponsive for 0.5-3 seconds. This seems to occur more frequently when there are enemy players around. My character continues moving during the control blackout, so this isn't my FPS freezing.

I have had this problem with other HL mods, and I just started getting it with Beta 5. I've had it before with NS, but it went away (possibly because of some option tweaking I did on older NS builds; I don't remember how I managed to fix it or if it randomly just fixed itself; that's why I'm here )

On other HL mods I noticed that servers where I downloaded a security module prior to playing had a much higher chance of having this problem. Did beta 5 implement new anti-cheating code perhaps?

I have 1gb RAM, AMD 2700+ proc, and Radeon 9800 Pro videocard. Latest vid drivers (8/16/04 or so).

I recently bought a new mouse, partially with the hopes of solving the issue for other HL mods and partially cuz my old mouse sucked. No dice though, it still happened for other HL mods and it now happens in NS again with Beta 5.

Use "net_graph 3" and see if you choke.
if yes, then change your "rate" to an upper value.

Was getting a choke of 0-9 with a rate of 6192 (or something similar to that).

I set Rate to 12000 and no longer noticed any choke problems, but my issue still occurred (controls being unresponsive.)

same 9800pro 128mb. No issues here.

cat 4.6

Opengl
Vsync off
Triple Buffering off
TrueForm off
Force Z-Buffer Depth off

Try those settings if you still have issues...

The Hitching problem also occurs with some mice. Some usb mice like to Hitch every few seconds. Such a problem i blamed on changing the usb slot the mouse is using. The Logitech Mice like to do this from my experience. No other problems.

Figured the problem out.

EAX Audio. Once I turned EAX on, everything has been smooth. I have a SB Audigy.
