<div class="IPBDescription">My first try at mapping</div> Concept: A deep-sea research facility. It is a sanctum (hence the name) for scientists and researchers as it is far away from the outside world. But the sanctity has been broken....the Kharaa has infested parts of the facility due to its hospitable humidity and heat from nearby volcanic vents.

Hive ideas: "Aquatic Biosphere" , "Geothermal Generator", and "Hydroponic Farm".

This is the result of hours of configuring Hammer and figuring out how things work: The marine start. That hole on the top is a ventilation shaft that the marines used to come down to the facility.

Some comments plz!

    I like it, although I think that it may be a little bit too open, and the floor a little dull.. maybe add a couple of boxes somewhere, or something like that to make it a little more enticing; Other than that, it looks good <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Fix the light texturing on the bottom of the walls, it seems a bit overused and too recurrent.

    Fix the lighting system, because the plain, white feel is always a bit dull.

    The rest if quite good though. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The floor is dull and the room has too much of a box-feel. That said it's definitely good for a 1st attempt.

    To make it a bit more lively, try adding some angles to the walls (either by changing the horizontal or vertical supports). At the moment when anyone walks into the room they can pretty much see everything in the room. By adding some indentations here and there it should benefit from what I'm gonna call the "aha" factor, when you go into a room thinking its clear and one of two things happen:

    1. A gorge/low HP Alien is hiding round the corner, tries to make a run for it and you gun him down cackling louder and louder as each steaming ammo cart tinkles on the floor tiles.

    2. A focus fade suddenly blink-swipes you, turning to face him you curse the commander for not getting the next Armour ugrade. n00b com! n00b com! n000000b!

    The floor also lacks depth, try adding a raised/indented middle section with an interesting shape of your own design. Oh and where's the CC gonna go?

    Also you could change the air vent depending if you're going on realism or architectural flair. Realistically not many people would bother overcomplicating a vent shaft by building it in an octogan chape. Stylistically you could play around with something, maybe having secondary support pipes coming off the sides. God knows it would be fun to attack the MS by dropping in from above!!!

    Maybe I'll change my sig to include something about being the 1st person to coin the phrase <i>"aha" factor</i>, and then include in every bit of criticism a long and previously heard chronicle of why the <i>"aha" factor</i> is so important. Then again, maybe that would just be lame...

    The CC is behind the wall to the right, I didn't bother to include it in a pic cuz it was pretty plain. Now, I have a "command centre" there, but then theres a problem...I want to make holographic images w/ func_illusionary but I get "bad surface extents".....help is appreciated. And about the vent, yes i would add a vent leading there for aliens to drop down.

    And about the pic...I had to make it low quality cuz I can't seem to get it nice-looking without going over 120k.

    Bad surface extents is usually the result of accidentally fitting the texture you're using to a very tiny edge. You may have accidentally had the entire brush you're using for your hologram selected when you applied the texture, and then hit 'fit', inadvertently squeezing it into the tiny one unit thick edges.
