Good Computer, Horrible Fps

Computer Specs:

2.66Ghz
1.0Gig of RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro All-In-Wonder
Driver Version: ATi Omega 2.5.76

I have uninstalled my Video Drivers and used Driver Clean to fully eliminate before re-installing.

I have run Spybot and Adaware.

I have run virus scans, more than I can name, every program on earth, I have the trial version of. (Except Norton Anti-Virus which I own as my usual virus protection software.)

I am getting 15 FPS, sometimes less. This is ridiculous.

My computer was running fine and one day I turn STEAM on and this is what I get...

<img src='http://www.riseofpower.net/fps_max.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

9 FPS??!?!

I want you to understand that I am no computer nub and no NS nub, I've been playing NS since 1.04. I have a CAL match tomorrow and I need to get my frames back up. I have nothing running in the background, I've tried diff. drivers, I've tweaked my OpenGL settings and NOTHING, I still get this crap.

I'm more than a bit frustrated, if anyone has any suggestions, please give them. :|

Here's something quite interesting, could be the problem. My STEAM Drive (G:) is horribly fragmented but it says several files couldn't be defragmented, here's the log and a pic to show you the fragmentation...

did you make sure your drivers aren't working in software mode?
(I have a replacement ATI card before I get my 6800U... I don't know much about ATI but I once got a driver failure and a message which said the display will be in software mode)

One thing I can suggest is turning off all unnecesary programs and services. (this may require several restarts to do)

First off, open the start menu and hit run. Type in "msconfig" without the quotes and go to the Services tab. Tick the box that says "hide all microsoft services." This should remove a large ammount of the items on the list. Untick everything except what you *know* you need.

Then go to the startup tab, and hit 'unselect all.' Then, go through the list and only reenable items that you know you need. Hit apply, then ok. Restart and boot up NS.

If that fixes the problem, chances are one of the services or programs is in conflict with HL and you might need to disable/uninstall it.

And any one of them could be causing your problem unintentionally, or could be a virus/trojan/etc in disguise - something your scanners might not have picked up. Or it could be invisible to that list entirely.

I know almost all of those programs and the ones I don't I have seen before and am 80% sure they're normal processes, it IS possible that an invisible process is running I suppose but if a plethora of Virus scanners don't pick it up nor does it show on this list, how do I have any idea I have it?

I assume you arent using OpenGL.
You should check out the thread MrMojo made about low fps, and where he got the answer that you should copy your driver's opengl dll to halflife\gldrv and then edit the driver-textfile. Search for it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Play any other game on your pc and see if it's slow.

There have been problems with Radeons and the half-life engine (people with 3gig machines and 9800 pro's getting 10 fps) so go to google and search for that problem, theres no definitive solution though.

Try using the catalyst drivers instead of Omega.

Also try shutting down as many programs on that list as possible and see if it runs, not all of those are essential.

For example...one guy used to get 10 fps, then he forced his monitor hz up to 85 and suddenly got 99 fps, its always something stupid and small like that, ESPECIALLY with the Radeons + half-life..

If anyone reads this please don't post that you have a Radeon and you get 99 fps, its a rare-ish problem.

Not that you'd do it or anything but... Get rid of Norton. It does those damn background scans almost all the time that really lag you up.

I know what StyleXP is and it never affects my FPS but I will look into sner.exe and sqlservr.exe since I have no clue WTH those are...

Do you have Kazaa installed or had it installed?

A lot of issue can arise from this evil program because it is legalized parasitic computing. (people can legally hack into your system)

That was the problem with mine for a long time. I thought I had uninstalled it but it wasn't gone.
