School Project Mapping Request

BulletHeadBulletHead Join Date: 2004-07-22 Member: 30049Members

texturing help
Okay, many of the ORIGIONAL Hl textures as well as a good number of NS textures work VERY well with my school's textures... but I have tried and FAILED horribly to make my own textures, and I do not have time to mess trying to learn them (I only have THIS year to get it all done right... and it's a HUGE building)

As such, I'm putting out a request- if I get the pictures, can you guys make me the textures? Also, can anyone point me to some good, realistic looking textures I can use?

    is this the right forum?

and im not sure if you can use different textures in ns anymore.. i remember hearing something about high res textures that you used to be able to use, but they changed it cus some people use them for cheating or something?

Incidentally, if the project isn't for NS, you can't use NS textures for it without permission.

I don't really think its for any game is it? I'm gonna have to say something i really don't want to but you best bet for those textures is to look through the counter-strike wads. I did a school level for cs and using only the cs and hl textures worked really well.

Lol, well, when I'm done, I'll release a MODIFIED version for NS

I've already gotten one hallway started with general texturing.. looks horrible with the default NS/HL textures (not ONE good cinderblock texture )

I tryed to get a copy of blueprints for my school to make it in hammer, they looked at me like I was crazy

All the school shootings lately and you go asking for blueprints... of course they looked at you funny

Aight, I got one of the rooms and part of a hallway done using default textures... gonna fire it up probably later tonight and test it out

BTW- I'm doing all this on an 800 mhz LAPTOP... so yeah... XD

BTW2- this map is prolly gonna top at around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1 bazillithousand) different brushes 0o I've used about 100 brushes getting just ONE room together, without any furniture or lights! There's like, 400 rooms! PLUS hallways and the gyms and cafeteria and bathrooms!

You're going to run out of resources horribly fast at that rate. Since you don't have to make a playable map, you'll have some fudge factor, but you'll still need to be tricky with the way you piece it all together to keep it from being a giant visual lag fest.
  • BulletHeadBulletHead Join Date: 2004-07-22 Member: 30049Members
Well... I figure with some tricked out Vis Block usage, HINT brushes, and possibly a dual set map (use a teleport pad to go from one level to the other), I MIGHT be able to get it playable!

If not... I'll ask for a team of old pros to help me optimize / rebuild it... I believe it'd make a GREAT map... but... yeah...

or, I could just do a few rooms 0o'

I think that what with this being somewhat irrelevant to NS (the only connection being that you say you'll release an NS version if you complete it and if it's playable), you should at least release somescreen shots for us to look at, otherwise I know I'll be doing my best to help this thread die.

Heh, don't worry about that Kobayashi, I'll get some screens soon. The past 2 days I was flooded with work to do, so I haven't had a chance... I'm GOING to tomorrow, 100% sure of it!

Thats not the problem, you can quite happily render alot of polygons if its just for show. The problem is the limits a map has patches, leaves, etc...
  • BulletHeadBulletHead Join Date: 2004-07-22 Member: 30049Members
Well, here's some screenshots so far of the first room... note, I need to adjust / tweak the mesh for the screens on the windows (might scrap that) and the lights need fixing (invisible brushes )

If you use the HL engine for you map, you definitly shouldnt use the hl.wad textures, they are simply out of date
  • BulletHeadBulletHead Join Date: 2004-07-22 Member: 30049Members
all my searches for WAD files brought up weird **** porno sites and after about page 5 I got fed up...

(refers to the screenshots ->) school? OLD-school??? what are these textures? *tries to remember* right, I guess they WERE used in halflife 6 years ago.

either find new textures or make your own. atm it looks like a crappy, outdated custom cs map. XD

Heh, thanks for the .wads. I figured out why I got some weird stuff... apparently my google was hijacked at the time ... I'm going to take this moment to pimp SpyBot Search and Destroy

Simply put, it freaking ROCKS! Kicks out 99.9999999999999% of all spyware, and what it can't get, simply CAN"T be gotten rid of

As for the textures... yeah, I know. Once I figure out HOW to make em, I'll be aight... or if I can have some made for me (like the weird fabric wall ones 0o')

Are you still running IE? That would explain why you get all that spyware. And if you'd actually upgrade your spyware scanner you'd find out that almost everything can be get rid of.
