<div class="IPBDescription">Is it possible in NS?</div> Perhaps this isn't the right place to post this, so if it should be elsewhere just say so. Cheers.
Has anybody managed to get NS to work with more than 2 speakers? That is to say, they have got it working with 4 speakers or 5.1 surround sound (or better).
Perhaps the halflife engine doesn't support it?

1) Go to control panel > Sounds and Audio Devices
2) Under the tabs 'volume' & 'audio' hit the advanced buttons
3) Select 5.1 speakers.
Hopw that helps.
My system was already set to quadraphonic already (I have only 4 speakers).
All 4 speakers work with normal programs like winamp, etc.
They also work when playing the background music before you join a game in NS, but then it just drops to the front 2 speakers when the game actually starts.
Seems very odd...
I have since enabled the other settings of which you speak and it seemed as if it was to no avail, but then I turned the volume right up and very quite sound then came out of them.
The rear speakers produce a normal volume when play music etc, but when playing half life or any of it's mods, it just produce very quiet audio out of the rear speakers.
Back to the drawing board... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I seem to have forgotten that when you make a noise in front of you, it should only be very quiet from behind you. This is the problem when you test it using lmg on a map with noone on it...
Please move along now.

I use AC97 drivers for a AOpen AK77-8X VIA KT400 motherboard, and can't for the life of me get NS, or any app, to use the surround sound properly.
The mobo has the 3 typical jacks for mike, line-out, and line-in. However, there's some dandy drivers that suppposedly split these into all the channels necessary for 5.1.
But all it does is mirror sounds from the front speakers, and even then, it does it badly. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Anyone know of a solution, or do I need a proper sound card?
To add to the complications, whenever I get digested as a marine, the sound scheme switches to PSYCHOTIC.

Every time. :S Means I have to alt+tab to restore it. NS heard through the ears of a madman is pretty... wierd.

A proper sound would probably be needed. Trust me - they are worth it. You can get one for 40-50$ on newegg.
As for the sound/digestion problem, does it fix itself after you spawn? If so that's a known bug. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
5.1 <u>headphones</u>?!
For real? What are they? I want some! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Wait, there's a known bug with these obscure drivers switching sound scheme?! Woa. I knew the BT was getting big... Whew.
I'll get by with 6th sense until I can find a competition to enter 100 times to win a Audigy Platinum. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Got a pair, can't get them to work as 5.1 though, only like normal headphones <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Exept mine changes to 'Under Water' not Pshycotic.

Yes indeed. Check out yonder <a href='http://www.bit-tech.net/review/261/' target='_blank'>review</a> (which is the first link I found on google about them). They're very nice. They give you bonus h4x points, since you can actually hear where people are moving around you, whether they're in front or behind and so on.
i wish i had 6 speakers...

Yes, they pwn pwn pwn pwn pwn. I have been accused of wallh4xorizing 4 times since I got them. XD
These things should cost you ~60$ and are worth *every* penny. IMO a must for an audiophile that can't have speakers.

Check Zalman's site for a store locator where they might be found: <a href='http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/usa_index.asp' target='_blank'>http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/usa_index.asp</a>
However you can use as many speakers as you wish, but it will not help whatsoever in the accurate location of sound effects - i.e. footsteps.
For competitive gameplay i suggest you use to a two front speaker setup.

This is what I thought too.

Dragon Mech, can you certain? (I may invest in a sound card as a result of your answer, so no pressure. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
Anyone else have definate proof?
Or the solution to the mysterious "Underwater Onos digest sound" issue?
Where are you getting this information? Even if the original version of Half Life only supported a 2 speaker setup, which I seriously doubt, (it was 1998 after all, not 1988) in one of the MANY updates over the years surround support would have been added. And trying NS with surround sound makes it obvious. You can very easily tell that sounds are coming from different directions based on your position in relation to the source of the sound.

I am completely certain that surround sound speakers work in HL/NS. I've known exactly where that marine around the corner was too often to not believe it. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
As for a good, cheap sound card <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=29-118-102&depa=1' target='_blank'>this beauty</a> comes highly recomended and is only 50$.

Had same problem as both of u....
Turn off EAX and A3d support in sound options.....
