<div class="IPBDescription">I want your opinion</div> <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->So I'm working on my next low poly model, and I'm on the fence about the inclusion of a certain few features. I can't make a descision on whether the extra polies are essential to the shape of the model. The extra polies are grey so you can tell exactly what's different. If that arms lab gets the most votes, I'll skin them.
So I figured I'd ask you guys what you think. Are the extra polys essential to the shape of the model?

Voting will close once the topic falls to the second page of topics.

Current Tally:
Version 1: 1
Version B: 3<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Voting is over! Kobayashi wins the thread! He told me what I should have known all along. My first try at it was right; Version B is the one true low poly arms lab, and Version 1 is just a mediocre stab at trying to bring some of that detail back. But the detail can't be brought back in 20 polys, it'd take at least fifty polys to do it right. Maybe I'll do that someday with a middle-poly arms lab, but not today. Today, Version B gets a release.

Default Arms Lab-------------------------------------------------Version 1--------------------------------------------------------Version B
607 polys----------------------------------------------------------136 polys-------------------------------------------------------116 polys

    I think my PII might want to propose to you. These low poly models=very happy low end computers. I love what you are doing and how you aren't killing the quality of each model.

    Without the extra polys it just looks like a older version or something. My Celeron 500Mhz sends it's love too. (That's my other, bad, computer, thank god)

    I think version B is fine.
    Can we get some screens of the deployed armslab maybe? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Heh. You can get some screens once I release it. The arms are there, and they all connect to the frame and screen panel, which is more than I can say for the default... the panel just hovers there...

    Show us some pics with the panel extended, I'm wondering just how well it survived the poly-stripping.

    That is my next question. But I am confident that it will look nice.

    Or that the whole panel was removed... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Maybe the door should lift up and just have the panel there.

    that's why I requested a pic <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Once again, you'll all get deployed pics once I'm ready to release the model. And I'll release it sooner if I get some votes and not just requests for more screenshots. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'm happy with the way the arms turned out, and I hope you can use my other work to judge that if I like it, then you'll like it too.

    Version B, without the gray parts.
  • cortexcortex Join Date: 2003-11-28 Member: 23707Members
    the version on the far right looks the best. (apart from the original)
    the one in the middle is the same as the one on the right without the grey parts anyway.

    I am agreeing with b looks the best.

    Okay everyone - I edited my original post to make this clear, but those grey polys are going to get skinned. They're just flatshaded in that screenshot so that you can easily tell the versions apart, and because I'm too lazy to skin it if nobody thinks it's worth the hassle. Think about whether the extra polies really carry their weight by adding shape to the model. I'll let you change your vote based on that info.

    Clashen - There is no version C. You can't vote for that.
    Charge - I appreciate your enthusiam, but "it rocks" isn't a vote <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Haha, I meant version B.

    B, dont bother with the extras, if people are needing these low poly models, then bare bones will do

    ppl should make big blue-red boxes to replace the structures...that way even MORE fps!!1

    seriously ppl shouldnt be so concerned about high fps to the point where they simplify everything to the max...and by that i mean ^^ seems that only stat **** ppl would do that

    besides NSarmslab will ban you cuz you downscaled the armslab model SACRILEGE!!1

    I love your work, SnappyCrunch. I'd be happy with version B, myself.

    Version B for desperates, but I'd like to see one that was roughly 200 polys for the middle-of-the-road option.

    I think that if you really need to cut down on model polys to a minimum you'd opt for B.

    But if you just wanted to tweak your polys slightly lower you'd want a model that was a bit more detailed but still a significant reduction from 600 polys.

    The extra polys on option 1 don't add enough for them being worthwhile, it just gives a mediocre touch to it, whereas option B is low poly and really looks like a good armoury. You would notice the difference, but you wouldn't complain about it.

    Actually, Kobayashi, it's possible to do a building that looks like the arms lab with a floating screen panel in about 30 polys, and as long as it's skinned, it doesn't look too bad. So both of these are a middle of the road option; they're not scraping the bottom of the barrel by any means. I think perhaps you're right, though. It'd be possible to slap about 50 polys worth of those guards on the front, and it'd look pretty good, compared to those grey knives that are on there now. Maybe I'll do that in the future, but today isn't the day. Thanks, Kobayahsi. You win the "best response of the thread" award.
