EDIT:

Actually I've been thinking about what you have all been saying and maybe the idea of buying your own guns with your own resources wont work for those various reasons however maybe something similar to that could work which would alieviate the problems I was trying to address.

Say the resources stay with the commander but units can use the armory/lab to select the weapon/gun they want. When they do an icon of that item/gun flashes up on the top right of the commanders view. If the commander left clicks on it the icon it is bought and the unit gets it but if the commander right clicks the unit does not recieve the item and is notified they have been denied the request and informed to move out with whatever they have. There would have to be an anti-spam system implemented and a system to address multiple requests at once but just not haveing to move from wherever the commander is at to go buy weapons/guns and not have to listen to specific requests for type of gun or armor or a welder etc would be very useful.

The commander mode is a feature not a bug. If you are going to give resources to individual marines, why stop at that? Just get rid of the commander and then marines can be just like aliens, or like CS. How boring.

The commander mode has a purpose. If it is not the easiest thing on earth that is a good thing.

hhmmm...that seems to have good idea/bad idea written all over it. I like it...I mean, don't get me wrong it has potential but one..Dev's...two...marines would be alot like aliens with a glorified builder then and three...Evil uses.

I suppose a simple way for me to look at it is that I would have marines buying whatever they want...or sitting around the spawn waiting for the resources so they can get it because I'm working on a forward base and don't have the resources for them. Yes...it would be nice...get them off my back of asking for stuff we don't have early on or stuff they could then get themselves however...it leaves them vunerable at the spawn for to long...I'll have marines sitting around doing nothing while I could have just left 5 suits of HA and 5 HGMs in front of them...they spawn suit up...and they're out the door.

the idea is that it just takes away the meaningless late game job of the commander buying weapons and guns and dropping them in the spawn for the marines when he should be concentrating on what the commander is there for. (which is not that)

i see your point mindmeld. i actually hope it would mean they wont hang around waiting for that gun. usually i see so many people waiting for like a hmg when they have heavy armor already and they wont move out until they get one.

generally people will get hmg and hvy armor togehter so unless they are near 50 resources tehy will just go out as light for a few runs before buying the equipment.

I've played comm quite a few games and I really dont get how comms can have so much trouble handling everything. Just make sure you have hotkeys. During almost every game, I notice one squad of marines sticking together, welding each other, and they are only asking ammo/health, never guns (because they dont die working well in a team with my backup), so I always hover over those and heal them all the time. Then when someone in base needs something, I click on minimap, drop a gun and armor, and go back to my squad of marines... How hard can it be... I dont follow marines who go off solo, if they request health using the special menu (so I can jump to them easy) I will of course help them, but if they throw a fit about not getting healed all the time solo then I tell him to stick with a squad, it's much easier to manage 2 squads then 8 solo marines. So when I gotta choose, I manage my squad, the rest will learn to work together or die. If you do that it's very easy (IMO) to handle all comm things. I think the fact I've been playing RTS games forever is an advantage (since you have to be able to multitask very well in RTS and be very fast on reactions), but I still dont see why it's all so hard.... I can handle any weapon request in my base in less then 5-10 seconds (unless my squad is under attack and needs my healing backup to stay allive, in which case I will save them first).

The main problem with buying weapons yourself is you'll get lamers spending all the team resources, and if the resources get split among marines like they are in aliens, you lose an advantage. (Yes advantage, b/c if you split them, you'd have guys on the marines who live forever and dont need resources to buy weapons, so their resources would just be sitting there doing nothing)

Another point of balance is that if the marines were able to get back into the field immediately after spawn completely equipped the aliens would be screwed. It takes forever for an alien to do all three of his upgrades and then evolve into his choosen lifeform. Marines would be all over the aliens before we could get out of spawn. With the commander having his hand on the lifeline of the marines makes team work and resource management essiential. I like the way it is now and yes I play commander and aliens depending on the day.

I know what you mean Tempest.
To me its no big thing, I've been playing rts's forever, and using hotkeys is 2nd nature.
I feel sorry for the n00b commanders who are still trying to click the icon for the equipment menu, then click on health, then drop it, and repeat.
In the same time they've done this, we've dropped 5 of them in the same spot while barely moving the mouse

Oh well, guess they gotta learn some time right?

i do use hotkeys and i dont find it that much of a problem commanding, just sometimes your following that one marine that is doing something vital, trying to keep him alive as he builds something and waiting to place the first sentry turret as quick as possible, meanwhile those 30 seconds or whatever 4 marines are waiting at spawn for armor/weapons

I also hate it when i'm a marine and i ask for a welder somewhere for 10 minutes so i can repari like the turret factory on 1 hlth. :/
