What is your internet connection? Your rate should be set depending on how you;re hooked up to the net. For example, I'm on a 100Mbps T1 LAN (<3 my college) and my rate is the max of 20000. 9999 might be a little low unless you have a modem.

its a bit harsh to get banned for something your unaware of committing. but i suppose they were a bit angry.

anyways set your rate depending on your connection type - 15000-20000 is fine.

set cl_cmdrate to 101 and cl_updaterate to whatever your average fps is - max 101 i suppose.

In that case, 9999 is probably a bit low. Try setting it to 15000 (just type rate 15000 in your console) and try that.

Yea done, not had an effect on my play tho. Im not a nub to the game I just never realised my rate bein too high or too low could possibly be an advantage to me.. given a low rate normaly causes choke. And was my mistake it was set at 99999. Just a bit annoyed I got banned for it. thx for the info.

They were whining idiots, as far as I know unless you have extreme rates they really don't affect the way other people interact with you ingame.

Again I need to know your internet connection speed. For a slow dial-up that could work, but the rate still seems a little low. Try bumping it up and see what happens.

Getting banned might have more to do with using up alot of bandwidth for minimal gain... I know servers can set a max and a min rate, this is to prevent exploit, and reduce the bandwidth stress on the server.

im on 3mb dsl, and I set mine to max, since most of the time when you play the server has it capped anyways...

Funny, I've never changed mine from defaults, so I always find it comedy how people think it's going to make a huge difference to your play. Unless you're on an extreme connection (IDSN, POTS) you're going to be fine leaving it on the standards.

Yes but you aren't the best player so you can't say that improving your rates will not make you a better player.

Because the best NS(CS, DoD, etc.)players have adjusted their rates.

Figuring our your rates is very important, for 56K players especially, for anything else generally you should just jack it.

I've adjusted my rates.

According to Forlorn, I'm the best CS player. Yay!

huh? I seem not to understand it. What are the rates for and how do they affect the game? Also, I would like to know, how I should set my rates. (I have DSL 768k)

I just looked up my rate: 7500
its default, so I think it´s normal, is it?

Is that type of logic why they made you a PT?

I've just posted a very good link to an all connections HL-specific (including windows settings 2000, XP etc.) guide in the Help section of the forums. Search 'connections' if it's not still on the first page...

Forlorn: Of course. There's no logic that compares to the rambling and ravings of a mad man.

As for rates; Different servers require different rate setup, as maxrates/minrates and server fps play a big role in it. The best advice would be to remember your original setting, use net_graph to find choke/loss, and experiment with settings.
