Trouble With Freebsd?

One of my friends recently got a NS server setup on a 45mbit connection, system is a p4 1,7ghz, 1gb ram and newest version of FreeBSD, we have been spending half a week troubleshooting, because the ping sucks when there are over 8 players, when we hit 11 players pings are up near 500. Anyone got a solution? (I have seen people with lower systems pull off more players on linux).

    set mp_networkmeterrate to something low like 7000, 3000, 0 ..

    mp_timelimit 15

and if theres anything else besides that ns server running its going to lag
    when i run 18 players on a p4 2.4 ghz w/ 1gb ram box it uses 95% cpu constantly
its using 84% right now with 14 players

Yeah. Take a look at your server CPU utilization while NS is running. An upcoming patch will be improving server performance.

Same problem on FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE, with Dual Athlon MP 2000+ and Pentium IV 2.4 Ghz.

FreeBSD has to "emulate" linux so running one on 1.01 might be a little shaky, however i'd just keep it running the way it is as a fix is on the way for CPU usage. Good choice of OS, I love BSD! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Let me know if you have any weird problems that popup down the road, ill try to answer them.
