    We can only hope... I'm just almost certain that as soon as someone gets the boxed copy out to customers, Valve will stick their tongue out at Vivendi and unlock it on Steam.     I think you are still missing the point that you WONT be able to play it early, since you need to download a module from steam, steam controls the realease of Hl2 now.

    what about people who dont have internet? i think that youjust need to authenticate it if your going to register it, which is optional. you can play it offline as much as you want.

    They cant play.

    Internet is part of the minimum spec. If you think about it, there are bound to be more people with internet connections than those with HL2-capable machines.

    If you dont have internet buy a modem, get a free trial internet cd and hook your computer up to the phoneline. Easy.

    If it encourages/forces more people to get online then thats good thing for the industry and maybe itl takes a game like HL2 to do this.

    Ohh and any potential sales loss is far far outweighted by the benefits of Steam and extra cash they get/save from it. Valve have done their research, its obviously a decision they didnt take lightly.
