<div class="IPBDescription">Which are good?</div> The ones I know about:

<a href='http://www.free-av.com/' target='_blank'>Antivir</a>
Good things:
Easy to use,scheduled updating, or better, put the update file in your "run at startup" folder and you're Antivir will update itself automaticly at windows startup.
Bad things:
-comes with an annoying lottery popup, which can be removed easily btw.
-no email scanning?

<a href='http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5' target='_blank'>AVG</a>

Good things:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--># The AVG E-mail Scanner, which protects your e-mail
#The AVG On-Demand Scanner, which allows the user to perform scheduled and manual tests
#Free Virus Database Updates for the lifetime of the product<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Bad things: I had other virii scanners catching more than AVG
No automatic update @ windows start?

<a href='http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html' target='_blank'>Avast 4 Home edition</a>
Good things:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- Standard Shield protects the file system
-Generic SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 scanner
-Specific MS Outlook plugin
- Heuristic analysis in e-mail modules
-SKINS!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

bad things:
errr I don't have experience with it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> myself.

Anyone who knows more than I told or wants to correct me, go ahead

    Even Trend says that an online solution is the worst AV you could possibly get. And no, that's not just a plot to make you buy pc-cillin.

    I use avast! myself and for some reason, some files make the scan freeze up and stay hours on that one file.

    That and the voice is annoying <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Bah, a solution on your computer is far worse than an online scan.

    What's the first thing a virus does when it gets in your computer? Turn off the AV, or otherwise nerfs it. Can't turn off the internet without you noticing.

    While I do know they exist, I have yet to encounter one which turns off my AV, nor anybody I have ever met has had one.

    Put it another way. Whats one of the first things you can get as soon as you connect to the internet?

    A virus.

    The online scan should be a last resort / complementary solution to a installed AV.

    Well on the note of AVG, I am currently using their "lite" version for personal use.
    Granted on windows start up it doesn't autoupdate that is why they have that option for auto-update before running the scanner, it is AVG properties tab or some such.

    As for it not picking up virii, I have yet to have it not pick up a virus that a paid for one would. In fact, I have even had it pick up things that Norton and MacAfee did not, which is one reason I switched, so that is the one I use for the most part.

    Personally, if you really want an AV I would go with PC-cillin or buy the AVG premium one. Both have excellent realtime scans, and will usually remove trojans/virii/worms before they can cause damage. :-)

    The others I am not up to date on.

    I swear by AVG. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    By the way, you can set AVG to look for updates once a day, before it even scans, rather than on-boot. And if your computer is off and the scheduled time to update passes, it'll auto-check on startup.

    Started using avast! recently and it's pretty nice. Can't complain about it, really.

    The bad thing I remember about Avast! was its resource consumption. When I had it (about a year a go, I suppose?) it had 4-6 processes going at any point in time, and each uses up a few megs of ram.

    I use Antivir now.

    edit: ! in Avast! :O

    i <3 avast! I tried a number of anti virus solutions, and avast! was the best one, with constant updates. Very nice.

    My dad is an IT at the NYU Medical Center, and the folks there seem to favor AVG. I myself use it and so far nothing has gotten past it.

    I used Kaspersky Anti Virus (you have to pay for this), it is the best thing i tryed out yet.

    I uninstalled it to try out the new free avg version, KAV is still better though, every 2-3 hours an update.

    If you have Road Runner, you can get E-Trust Antivirus for free. It's on <a href='http://www.rr.com' target='_blank'>RR.Com</a>

    This thread necromancy is definately worth it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The NSA just released a document titled <a href='http://www.nsa.gov/snac/support/WORMPAPER.pdf' target='_blank'>The Case for Using Layered Defenses to Stop Worms</a>. They list anti-virus disabling as one of the four main survival methods for viruses and worms, and say,
    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->It is common for malicious code to disable anti-virus software, personal firewalls, or intrusion detection systems.  Worms may disable the detection mechanism or modify it so that it does not work properly.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    So, I'm not crazy, and you guys need to keep this in mind.

    The rest of the document (47 pgs) is a good read, if you're interested in things like that. I'm just happy they talked about buffer overflows and such, which every programmer who ever produces a single line of code for public release needs to know about!

    my uncle had me de-virus his computer once... so I installed AVG on it, and it detected the virus immediately... however, the virus shut down AVG whenever I tried to run a 'clean' operation... but, AVG told me the name of the virus before it got shut down, so I googled for the virus and found a virus-specific cleaning util...

    long story short, I still <3 AVG.
