<div class="IPBDescription">Which are good?</div> The ones I know about:
<a href='http://www.free-av.com/' target='_blank'>Antivir</a>
Good things:
Easy to use,scheduled updating, or better, put the update file in your "run at startup" folder and you're Antivir will update itself automaticly at windows startup.
Bad things:
-comes with an annoying lottery popup, which can be removed easily btw.
-no email scanning?
<a href='http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5' target='_blank'>AVG</a>
Good things:

#The AVG On-Demand Scanner, which allows the user to perform scheduled and manual tests
#Free Virus Database Updates for the lifetime of the product<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Bad things: I had other virii scanners catching more than AVG
No automatic update @ windows start?
<a href='http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html' target='_blank'>Avast 4 Home edition</a>
Good things:

-Generic SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 scanner
-Specific MS Outlook plugin
- Heuristic analysis in e-mail modules

bad things:
errr I don't have experience with it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> myself.

Trend Micro Housecall: Free Online virus scanner
+Free
-online, so if you lose your connection, your boned
I use avast! myself and for some reason, some files make the scan freeze up and stay hours on that one file.
That and the voice is annoying <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
What's the first thing a virus does when it gets in your computer? Turn off the AV, or otherwise nerfs it. Can't turn off the internet without you noticing.

While I do know they exist, I have yet to encounter one which turns off my AV, nor anybody I have ever met has had one.
Put it another way. Whats one of the first things you can get as soon as you connect to the internet?
A virus.

The online scan should be a last resort / complementary solution to a installed AV.
Granted on windows start up it doesn't autoupdate that is why they have that option for auto-update before running the scanner, it is AVG properties tab or some such.
As for it not picking up virii, I have yet to have it not pick up a virus that a paid for one would. In fact, I have even had it pick up things that Norton and MacAfee did not, which is one reason I switched, so that is the one I use for the most part.
Personally, if you really want an AV I would go with PC-cillin or buy the AVG premium one. Both have excellent realtime scans, and will usually remove trojans/virii/worms before they can cause damage. :-)
The others I am not up to date on.
By the way, you can set AVG to look for updates once a day, before it even scans, rather than on-boot. And if your computer is off and the scheduled time to update passes, it'll auto-check on startup.
I use Antivir now.
edit: ! in Avast! :O
I uninstalled it to try out the new free avg version, KAV is still better though, every 2-3 hours an update.
<a href='http://sourceforge.net/search/' target='_blank'>http://sourceforge.net/search/</a>
Search for "antivirus". A few should turn up.

This thread necromancy is definately worth it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The NSA just released a document titled <a href='http://www.nsa.gov/snac/support/WORMPAPER.pdf' target='_blank'>The Case for Using Layered Defenses to Stop Worms</a>. They list anti-virus disabling as one of the four main survival methods for viruses and worms, and say,
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->It is common for malicious code to disable anti-virus software, personal firewalls, or intrusion detection systems. Worms may disable the detection mechanism or modify it so that it does not work properly.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So, I'm not crazy, and you guys need to keep this in mind.
The rest of the document (47 pgs) is a good read, if you're interested in things like that. I'm just happy they talked about buffer overflows and such, which every programmer who ever produces a single line of code for public release needs to know about!
long story short, I still <3 AVG.
