<div class="IPBDescription">I don't get it...</div> I was just looking at files on my computer when I found this picture:
<img src='http://img97.exs.cx/img97/4684/trigrid.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
I don't get it. How is that supposed to be? I tried it myself, and it really is like that. There must be some logical explanation for this, but I'm just too stupid to figure it out <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->. I mean, if the same shapes are used again, it should cover the same area, but somehow it doesn't seem to. Oh well, I hope you can help me, it's bugging the hell out of me.

I didn't know that so few degrees can make such a difference!

The lower "triangle" is 5 squares tall and 13 wide, so if it were a true right triangle its total area (including the missing piece) would be 5x13x0.5 = 32.5 squares. The missing square therefore accounts for 1/32.5 of the total area, or just under 3.1% -- it's not much!

Its hard work to reach the Shannanogens level.

Did you just quote a post from some other thread? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
wizard is sharp at math, he is a dilbert, err engineer
back on topic!
those triangles didn't make sense to me, however the slight change in angle is what gives the extra space correct?
The blue has a slope of 2/5 while the red one has a slope of 3/7
2/5 != 3/7. The end. The slope is not uniform.
It really gets you because you assume that the shapes in the triangles are the same and that just a simple rearrangement would cause the missing square. It is deceptive at the same time that it is an illusion.
Devious.

Actually it's 2/5 != 3/8. But it doesn't make a difference.
