<div class="IPBDescription">Are they two different things?</div> I went to a pep assembly at my high school today. Needless to say it was very depressing. However, on my way home I started thinking why I really play computer games. I'ed like to say its just for fun, that I play for the social value, but thats really not true. I play to escape this reality that I'm trapped in.
So, what I want to know is two fold. Do you play computer games to escape reality? and if you do is that really such a bad thing? If the reality that your living in now is made up, whats the problem with going to a different made up world?

If reality is boring then games are as good a filler as any the way I see it.

The father figure often deals with this person in a relation that is fragmented because the father only talks to him if there is a problem with something, he did something wrong, ect... He was probably never given enough personal space by the father figure at an early age to develop a defensive mechanism that would normally get mean ppl to leave them alone.
Anyone who feels like they got these symptoms pm me, cuz i can help......I want to be your friend, i won't tell anyone, or make fun of you....tell me about yourself as well so we can talk. This type of behavior develops in someone with the Schizoid personality at about the age of 2. Symptoms of this mental disease include slow, emotionless, fragmented speach, lack of eye contact, lack of essential understanding of important aspects of relationships, and frequent short-term memory loss. Schizoids are also sensitive to criticism, and are considered to be "boring" by the rest of society. They also use intellectualism much more than necessary, and are generally more intelligent, and logical than normal people.
Computer games are often a tool that a Schizoid will use to communicate with other people, bacause the mental disease severely hinders the part of the brain that is responsible for speach, but not the part that reads and writes as much. It also hinders the ability to express emotions, especially anger, or happiness. Comp games are also something that they use to stay away from the torture that "peers" put them through. Their "peers" are often extremely determined to destroy the schizoid's social impact by telling them something that means shut the **** up every time he attempts to talk, and these "peers" will also play many horrific slapstick-type jokes on him. And what makes this worse is the fact that when a Schizoid is in a social-situation, the mental disease often impaires his ability to move his body, his body appears stiff and hunched up. It is instinctive for a schizoid to get the urge to evade social situations, or curl up into a ball. He usually prefers to have fantasies about women instead of having actual relations with one, because the fantasy will not hurt him. The factors that lead to a schizoid personality disorder form a downward spiral that usually is never corrected. IT is possible to correct this, the patient has to want help bad enough to make it work.
Most of you may think this is absolutely silly, others will completely understand what I am saying. Less than 5% of the population has this, but many people will often feel this way in one way or another. If you do, pm me and I will give you some recomendations on what to do. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I don't know about the whole father figure stuff, but alot of those symptoms are indicitive to various personality types. For instance, you basicly just described ISTP personality type in the Myers-Briggs personality test to the tee, with the exception that you added peer relational issues and physical hiccups. For those of you who feel comfortable with who you are and don't feel you have signifigant relational issues when it comes to interaction with other people, don't jump the gun here and all of a sudden think you are sick. There is nothing wrong with the majority of introverted intellectual people.
I've seen it bad for some people. There was this kid that I saw in the news that had his EverQuest character accidentally deleted from the server. He killed himself. That's just sad. Games are drugs for some people.
Just play games to relax, not escape from reality and you'll be fine.
I love the gaming though.
I play computer games to relax, nothing helps me unwind after school like blowing in the brains of a Covanent grunt with the grip of my pistol or the stock of my shotgun. ^_^
Those people, and I use the term loosely, who believe video games are reality need to get help, serious help.
He's covering his tracks...
Mr.leet, it was off topic, but its not like the stuff you were saying originally was so terrible. I'm gonna leave your quote up anyways, because if there is anything substantial to the claims you were making, someone might acctually benifit from contacting you. Anyways put something like 'ignore this post' when you remove a post, other wize people will assume your spamming.
No, looks to be temp suspent (which means he shouldn't be in the discussion forums)
Report him if you must, but we shouldn't really be discussing it, as it's not an issue up to public opinion.
I use them because I enjoy the challenge of pitting my "skill" at something against another live person be that in poker, NS, or a real game of basketball (where I promptly get stomped <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ). I also work a full day (plus my NS duties), as well as am a father/husband for the majority of my day, games allow me a release to just relax and hang out with online friends in an environment that's fun and little pressure.
Other people may have things going on in their lives that make them want to come to an "alternate" reality where people don't know/care about things that are happening in your real life.
A portion of "griefers" are simply young kids that get picked on in their "real life" and because they are good in a technology, they enjoy inflicting this pain on other "virtual" users. They can't strike back in real life but they can cause much havoc online.
So there are many reasons one may play a video game, or even just join an online community.
So in closing, I don't think there is one right answer to the question given.. It's an individual thing.
NS has a lot of these kind of people sadly, not sure what it is about this mod, because I don't see it as much when I'm playing DoD or S&I (I guess if I had to think of one thing, it'd be because this mod is more social), but it's definately a huge problem. I'm hoping most of those extremely pathetic people just move on to hl2, and the NS community goes back to being a very enjoayble crowd.
