Well, I've only played CoH, so I'll say what I can about that.
Pro's: - Fun, just damn fun. Flying or jumping or running around like a superhero with a cape flapping behind, it doesn't get much better than that! - Good controls, easy to play - No sitting in the sewers for hours when killing rats, when you are done the tutorial, you already feel like you are super *zing* - Looks good - Character creation rocks, hands down - No PK (note. Will be added as an OPTION with City of Villians)
Con's: - Can be a tad repetative, same old missions over and over. Alot of new content has been added since I last played though - I found getting EXP in the high teens hard and taking a long time
Everquest 2. Well, no idea. I'm not a fan of the genre, and would really suggest CoH myself.
The CoH leveling in the higher level is not hard nor does it take a long time. Most people just got used to the pacing in the beginning.
The only reason I don't play as much today is because of school.
CoH is good for during that 30 minutes break, while EQ (in my experience) needs a lot of time in one sitting. To be fair, CoH doesn't feel as rewarding as EQ.

talking about leveling higher up (semi-high) in COH... where should a newly christened level 17 like me go? (Halloween event got me fully leveled from start to finish. First monster got me level 16, then I took about 1 or 2 hours and got my next level)
I found CoH to be mind numbingl boring after you get over the novelty of the character creation and stopped playing after a couple of months. My flatmate however is compeltely hooked on it and spends every waking moment grinding away gaining more XP so he can level up and grind away again to get more XP to gain another level and grind away to get more XP and gain another level so he can...you get the idea.
I may pick it up again when CoV comes out to see if its improved any but meh.
id say get everquest 2 but thats just my personal preferance i loved eq it was just great fun to play i bought COH but i never managed to play past the first month it just got realy boring after 1 week
Out of the two choices, i'd say EQ2. EQ2 is the first in the next generation of MMOGs, it has super-customisable avatars, excellent quality graphics and sound and it won't be any different from any other MMOG.
Sorry, but you could be playing CoH, EQ2, WOW, SWG, anything, you'd have to resort to grinding, that's just the way it is. Unless you're me, that is.
So basically it comes down to whichever one you like a) the look of and b) the world. Personally, i chose SWG because i'm a Star Wars fanboy. It has a good avatar customisation system, lots to do, and if you get fed up with the endless grinding that comes with any MMOG, i can just sit back and appreciate the world.
Go with WoW. If you pre-order at EB they give you a free WarCraft novel which is nifty. In addition to the fact that it's friggin Blizzard. Come on, you know they're going to deliver the goods.
Maybe I'm just jaded against SOE for the rest of my life.

Esuna, I played in the Stress Test a few months back and I NEVER had to resort to grinding. I spent most of my time questing and exploring. Blizzard was smart right there, the rewards for questing are more often then not more rewarding then any amount of grinding, and you get XP just for discovering a new location, rather then being bombarded by LOADING! PLEASE WAIT! LOADING! PLEASE WAIT! LOADING PLEASE WAIT! LOADING! PLEASE BEND OVER WHILE WE STEAL MONEY FROM YOU!
Thats another thing. WoW has seamless transitions between zones and PvP as well as a death system that doesnt cripple the player AND a decent grouping system.

I think WoW is the way to go. You can have a taste of it with Open Beta coming around. Dont worry about it being North America only. Just use a proxy to register and get your key. After that you can pretty much play without the proxy, unless Blizzard have tightened up their security/country validation schemes, which would be pointless anyway because it's too much effort for too little gain.
Bah, must stop rambling.
WoW is definetely it. It may not have the same level of charecter customisation or graphics quality that EQ2 is offering but WoW does have gameplay and fun on it's side. The only down side is the addiction factor. I'm still hooked and I've been unable to play it for the past few months.
PS: I think I may be a WoW fanboy.

Pro's:
- Fun, just damn fun. Flying or jumping or running around like a superhero with a cape flapping behind, it doesn't get much better than that!
- Good controls, easy to play
- No sitting in the sewers for hours when killing rats, when you are done the tutorial, you already feel like you are super *zing*
- Looks good
- Character creation rocks, hands down
- No PK (note. Will be added as an OPTION with City of Villians)
Con's:
- Can be a tad repetative, same old missions over and over. Alot of new content has been added since I last played though
- I found getting EXP in the high teens hard and taking a long time
