<div class="IPBDescription">Graphics card, monitor, I don't know</div> Lately, sometimes I get this vertical lines across my screen. They're quite wide, and they won't go away unless I restart the comp. And sometimes they pop up again after that. The funny thing is, printscreen saves these lines.

What can I do? Heres a screenshot of what it looks like...

It's probably overheating. Same kinda thing happened to me when it got too hot in my room.

See, it really happens randomly. I can run games for an hour and it won't happen, but if I boot it up after getting home from school, it happens.

If PrintScreen saves it, it's obviously not the monitor. PrintScreen saves the information that's going out to the monitor, not what might actually be displayed (i.e. brightness, contrast, hor/ver adjust, etc - not recorded)

Graphics card problem would be my bet. My computer at college was showing the same thing, only not as funky as yours.

Printscreen would show the graphics card overheading though? :/

From looking at that, I see that you use FireFox, you're looking at these forums, and Talesin posted something.

I don't know too much about this sort of thing, but I also think it probably has something to do with the heat on the inside of your computer. Maybe try to get a different heatsink on your processor, or invest in a PCI Slot Fan.

Ironicly I was getting a new CPU fan tomarrow anyway.

TT Polo 735, should replace the stock AMD cooler nicely.

But because of its total randomess, I don't think its heat...

Check your monitor's OSD. Is it affected? If yes, then it's a monitor problem

    If not:
Do a degauss or turn off/on your screen. Does it repair the problem? If yes, it's a monitor problem. If not, it's probably a gfx card problem.

I've had this problem with my old screen too. Any resolution or refresh change, or degauss/restart of the screen solved the issue.

Then again, as people have said, the printscreen would go against the idea of a screen issue.

Turning off or messing with the monitor does nothing.

I was thinking of using Radlinker to say, underclock it by 5mhz or so.

Could be an overheating problem, but those generally don't just start to happen. Unless the case was made with a horrible airflow design causing dust to build up something wicked.

My guess would be a driver problem. Try removing your video drivers, use driver cleaner ( <a href='http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745' target='_blank'>http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745</a> ), delete the registry locations for your driver information ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ATI Technologies ), then reinstall them. If that doesn't work try an older driver version ( <a href='http://www.ati.com/support/products/radeonwinxppreviousdrivers.html' target='_blank'>http://www.ati.com/support/products/radeon...ousdrivers.html</a> ).

The 4.11(or 5.0?) drivers should be out fairly soon, I'l wait for them.

    Yes it would.

Artifacts and graphical distortion would show on a screenshot.

I think the problem exists right here:
Talesin has invaded your computer. He may have used ninjas. He may have used the chibi dance. I don't know, but he did it.

All glory to the hypno-toad! I mean... Talesin!

Which gfx card have you got? I had the same problem (a bit more tiled) as i tryed to unlock 4 extra pipelines on my 9800se. Did you do this sort of thing?

If not, it is deffinatly a cooling problem, the gfx card fans have often sharp edges, so you have to clean them every 2-3 weeks or else they collect dust and stop spinning, the cooling performance may be enough for windows desktop applications, but the 3d mode will overheat it.
Those errors can't be created by monitors, it looks different.

I had that problem with my recent set up.. and it definitely wasn't cooling. Turns out, my power supply was failing, and couldn't supply the voltage necessary.

What are your specs? PS rating, video card, etc.

I'm running a P4 3.4E, 1 gig of ram, Geforce 6800GT. I used to have an Antec 480W trueblue power supply, and I just purchased a Thermaltake 560W TruePower power supply to replace it. Believe me, I didn't think it was the power supply at all... but turns out it was. Cooling wasn't an issue, the card idled at about 68- 70 degrees C, but I got a purty cooler anyway, and now it idles at like 50 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Here's the link:

[edit]ALSO. the lines you see on your screen are artifacts--which yes, are generally caused by improper cooling. But the fact that it is visible on your DESKTOP tells me that you either a) have a SERIOUS cooling problem, or b) there is a power supply problem. Try hooking the card up to the power supply directly--i.e. dedicate an entire line of molex connectors just for the video card. Also, these forums are GREAT for help with any video card, check it out:

    Hope that helps!!!![/edit]

    Could be a few things.

    A) When's the last time you updated your motherboard drivers? Specifically the AGPGART driver? If that's glitchy, it could be causing the problem.

    B) Do you have anything else attached to the power lead feeding the 9800? If so, get rid of it.

    C) Did you properly remove the OLD Radeon control panel, THEN drivers (in that order) before installing new ones?

    D) What wattage PSU are you using? It *might* be underpowered... but usually a Built By ATi card will pop up a window to let you know, rather than displaying this error.

    E) If you have multiple case fans that attach to PSU leads (rather than motherboard headers), do you have them all hooked to one lead? If so, spread them out. Putting too many fans on one lead CAN cause a harmonic problem, which 'dirties' the power everything else receives. Having them all on one lead can create a reinforcing (rather than destructive) waveform much more easily than if they're spread over multiple leads.

    F) Do you have a planned airflow pattern through the case? Mine comes in from the front and side, and blows out the back. If your cabling or fan pattern causes 'dead zones' in the airflow, it could be overheating even with plenty of fans.

    A. I run the latest
B.I don't belive so, all the power cables meet in one point and head off to the CPu
C.Yes, I even used driver cleaner
    D.350
E.I have 1 case fan, all the mobo supports(I wish I could find some that hook directly into the PSU...
    F.^^

Anyway, I went to the local computer shop to get my new CPU fan installed(I love it, I don't reach above 50, I used to go 70 in games)
I asked them about my problem, they said they were preaty sure it was a corrupt graphics card. I've got a Built By ATI 9800 pro(got it less then a year ago). So, I guess I may send that off for warrenty service.
