want to get a constant 100
Im trying to get my computer to net_graph 1 100 fps more often. right now it fluxes between 100 to 60.
The just upgraded the video card to a 6800 GT and overlclocked to GPU@400Mhz DDR3@1100Mhz.
What should I upgrade next? to get it at constant 100fps or do I jsut need to try and clean it up some.
System:
Pentuim4 2.53GHz
DDR300 1gig
Adigy 2 SB
DSL@1.5mbps min.
7200rpm 80gig 8mg cache.
My system also runs very cool at a stable 40c

but if you want to spend money I would have to say, your CPU
I have seen reviews where even the top cpus (AMD 64 bit 3700+) cannot push the newest cards to their max. ie x800 and 6800gt
Or maybe Overclocking the p4
Ever since I upgraded to my new pc with the same card (AMD 64 3200+, 512DDR 400, 160 SATA HDD, and Nforce3, 300W PSU), i literally CANT make it go lower than 100fps WITH 16x anistropic + 8x AA on 1280x1024, but thats with vsync off, which btw is really c***.
So i guess the cpu made the biggest diff, second the ram, and third the PSU. But i reckon even your PC should be getting the 100fps, even though I run ns at 1280x1024 with vsync on my screen (much better ) which gets nothing below 60fps, and it makes no difference whatsoever to my gameply or skill, so i think you shouldn't be worring too much about anything below 60.

I recently found the exact same problem with FPS cropping up. Skipping between 100 and 50. Before anyone suggests this is fine, the issue is with the variance, like with ping, steady figures allow you to adapt and play with them - massive swings make it very hard.
Anyhows, the solution I found was to remove my default FX card profile for Half Life and to just set the generic profile to high performance - and not forcing any other settings. If you select high performance but have left boxes checked they will override.
Also if you are on 512ram, perhaps a memory sweeping program would help performance - just free up non system memory before a game.
Also check for programs like Powerstrip or whatever which may also interfere or complicate your gfx settings.
Essentially I have found that newer games will play great with AA/AF etc, however with NS the only way it plays steady 99 for me is with everything cut to high performance. Maybe I can get away with some things turned on, but I really cba doing the trial and error.
JayK.
If you are running XP 512mb to 1mb makes a noticeable difference in my experience. But see how you get on with fixing the settings to high performance too and double checking for any overrides.

Basicly it doesn't matter what settings I put with the video card it still fluxuates dramaticly.
I watched the CPU while playing the game and it stays at a constant 100% usage for HL.
It doesn't even touch my ram realy. usuing only 400mg. I have a 1gig of ram in computer.
Is thier anything I can do to my computer to make it not get strained so much by HL? Or am I gonna have to buy a new prossesor.
A 2.4+ chip is overkill for NS as is. If I can think of anything more useful I'll let you know, but don't waste your cash on a new processor. I suppose something you could check to pass the time would be your motherboard/chipset and gfx drivers and a fresh reinstall of those.
JayK.
My frame rate goes down around players. could it be something to do with my connection speed?
i got AMD 2600+ basically hardly overclocked
only 512mb ram and only a radeon 9200 (once i get new job ill upgrade ) and i seem to get consisten 80-90+ even with MASS GL SPAM i hardly go under 70 odd for some reason
i expected it to die under pressure but hasnt
btw this is on full 24person server on 256k dsl (upgrading to 1.5mb in 3 weeks)

Before you install omega, UNINSTALL the old drivers then run DRIVER CLEANER(make sure you read the readme) . Then install OMEGA drivers and try the SPECIAL OGL drivers if you just want to play HL, if not install the normal ones.
Some other thoughts, are you using onboard sound? I found I suffered a noticeable drop in performance when using mobo integrated sound over audigy 2.
Are the settings within steam all correct for connection etc?
Are you set to use opengl within HL/NS and in gfx settings for 3d apps?
Can your monitor support the fps you want at the resolution you play at in game?
If you drop to 800x600 do things improve?
Essentially you should add fps_max 101 and cl_showfps 1 (i think) to your config and when you boot the game, only the second 9 of 99 should flicker at all. I.e. bouncing between 100/99. If the first digit is flickering then you still have the problem. I'm sure you already know this, but on the offchance.
Is HL2 or CSS autoupdating/unpacking
Do you have any adware/spyware interfering with your sytem? Get adaware - scan system. Check running processes for cpu usage. Get TCPview look for unauthorized connections. Fairly unlikely it is any of these too though ...
Have you changed any windows settings perhaps via tweaking programs that have restricted the allocation of resources to games etc? Unlikely again but still ...
One last thing is that even last night when playing, the second time I loaded into NS my fps was flicking between 70-100 50-100 etc when i played. As if the system was just stuttering. I rebooted the whole pc - went into steam again, went back to the same server and it was fine.
It's fairly hard to diagnose given the number of little things that could influence game performance, but the above are some of the other crazy things I considered in frustration when I was having issues.

I just dont check what ur talking about. NS is running on my old 1.4 Ghz 512 RAM; Radeon 9600 pro at constant 100 fps.
so stop the overclocking action and search a good server.
my config is just max_fps 100 and cl_rate 20000 (have to refresh this shitt every time i connect to a server )
gl and hf

I almost have specs (just got a 1,8 ghz proc.), but I can't get a decent/constant fps.
What drivers are you using ?
Did you install new ones from the beginning ?

Other times it just seems impossible to get good 'fight' fps...i.e. decent fps when you are fighting ..60+...
In quakeworld its down to a fine art, you play with either 72 fps or 77 fps, thats what everyone does, any less than 72 and its generally considered a big handicap.
I have a slow machine that doesn't get great fps in half-life and I have done EVERYTHING possible to try and get it higher...
The latest thing I have done actually works...I searched for low-poly models, downloaded them and replaced the orignal NS models with those...fps has increased ALOT..I mean where it used to drop to 10 or 15 it now stays at 40 or 50 solid.
My NS looks ugly now with lego marines walking around but I don't care I just want performance without having to get a new CPU...and by the way Radeons are notorious for having problems with the HL engine.
For everyone else who wonders why people want 100 fps....at a serious or competitive level fps makes a big difference, after years I can tell the difference between 50 fps and 60 fps...basically if you have better fps than the other guy you get the advantage in the 50/50 situation...

I was moving my stuff to crapiest settings and then my friend suggested to just find 1 as my config is HUGE. This is it I lost the refrence so who ever did it thx.
Just place it in a file called userconfig.cfg [make 1 if you have too] these will apply really bad visuals but great preformance boosts. I added some explinations to what you can edit to really equil out the graphic and preformance if your PC is a medium instead of just pure POOP!

Developer 1?
Gamma set ludicrously huge?
:S
Some of the more subtle tweaks mentioned earlier would be more suitable imo.
and really if your running a P2 600 your eally cant hope for good cfg any way can you...
