Flaytest diary

I had to comment...
I just read part 1 of the Flaytest diary on RR. This is the sort of thing that gets me hysterically enthusiastic over NS, and insanely jealous of the lucky few playtesters (of course).

If the rest of these articles are as good, I'll be a gibbering, NS obssessed, wreck by next weekend.

Cool! If you liked last night's, you will love tonight's. Much more nitty gritty. Plus new pics, naturally.

Gives us a bit of an insight as to what's going on with that crazy, Flayra mind of his. Good idea MonsE.

Heh heh, I must say I felt sorta in the same way. I've been spending so much time talking about all sorts of stuff here that I've almost forgotten how it'll all go together at the end. And when I read Flayra's juicy (though short) article I felt like there will be coming something really intresting stuff to explore when it's released.

(Really wrote all of this half an hour ago, but then meh network stop worked for a while :S)

That diary thing is great, it's really exciting to read it.

Actually, Mart, those were more than likely just some bots. Those names were in the list of bot names for the NSTR2 and well...

Anyways, yeah. This hearing what the developer thinks is a really neat idea. It definitely increases the jealousy factor a large number of notches. I just certainly can't wait to read more.

Cool. Flyer can release clouds of noxious fumes (or throw stink bombs).

I like the whole touch of 'only passenger was a corpse'. See what happens when you run around without squadmates?
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
There goes Greedo, ruining it for everyone again.

The screenshots are a mixture of thursday's playtest pics as well as shots with teams filled out by both real players and bots from another less public playtest session. All use the current beta build of NS.

Now go poke Greedo some more for being a spoilsport.

i liked day two's story, but are the stink clouds natural or a weapon of that flyer.. and when to they make those noises.. randomly or when they attack?
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
The 'stinkcloud' (actually referred to as 'spores' ingame) are like a grenade that the flyer can launch. It bursts into this particle-based fog of poison. So a lev3 flyer can sort of strafe the troops with it...

Almost forgot - the noises can be heard primarily during attacks. It just hightens the tension when you're creeping through a darkened hallway with a squadmate, when suddenly a high-pitched screech of a horde of lev1's dropping off the ceiling is heard. Makes your hair stand on end - on your decapitated head, that is...

I find the Flaytest Diary quite lacking and...short. It's like a taco without anything in it except some dressing

Well then what were you expecting? Realize, you could just get nothing, instead of an inside look at the mod.

that level 3 alien sounds just sooooooo cool.
And hey i'm glad with thsi diary, it doesn't have to be any longer, tho that woudl be nice, but it's just my guess Flayra isn't much of a writer and monsE chopped this thing in as amny pieces as he could, so he can update the rr.org paeg as much as he can, guess he is bored j/k

Ouch! I guess you get what you pay for, Jedisar.

Interfector is partially right - the articles are short and sweet because:

a. Flayra was in a hurry to head out to the GDC.
b. People tend to ignore longer articles.
c. We wanted to have content every day, and not just one big 1-page writeup.
d. You're a bad person, and it's Santa's punishment.

/me reads Flayra's diary

I like them. However it does give off airs of "haha I get to play and you get flayraitis!" I'll admit that it's fair and all (Flayra is making the game after all). Also the comment in the first one about newbie death does not sound good for trying to get newbie players....

All in all

A word of advice - never go into PR, Jed. PR is nothing BUT teasing. That's the point...

The overpowered builder is scary...
How does the swerving spit work?
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
They'll fix the builder.

And no one knows how the spit works yet, except the playtesters. Maybe they'll be nice and tell us. *hopehopehopehope*

Playtesters (ie. me) havent gotten the file just yet, just access to forums dealing with the playtest, so I cant answer that. ONly the likes of Monse and Flay can answer

After reading the first three (having to wait, since it seems the next will be out tomorrow), I must say I just keep getting more and more impressed with the NS project. The inside look at how playtesting is going is quite generous of the developers, and I commend them for thinking about us, sitting in the dark misty recesses of the NS Forums. Which is more then I can say for other mods out there.

Getting an idea of how things are playing out makes you feel more involved, and helps appease that urge to mailbomb Flayra a few times to inspire him and tha team to work faster. Then again, it just makes me wanna play even more at the same time, I just won't be going to post office now. ;P

hehe I liek the part 'bout the builderrush, and I thought the builder was more fo a defencive unit
They'll fix it, I'm sure of it.

This is why im actually glad they do not release NS earlier. what would happen if they released and THEN found out the builder is way to powerfull? a major dissapointment...

Time to revreal another of my personality flaws.

* holds up placard with "I told you so" on it *

I said the aliens would mainly turn into builders then build all the upgrade buildings straight away.

I didn't expect it to turn the builders into dreadnoughts though...

Note: The pictures show us two more previously unseen alien models. MMmm organic

I really liked the alien resource node 'pump'. Very much like the hive, though sufficently different to distinguish those two.

Not only do they have to balance the teams, but also the alien classes slightly, so not everyone chooses that class.

I don't mind if they release NS even later than planned, it'll get better at better. Good to advertise NS as polished from the first beta.
