<div class="IPBDescription">Grrrr....</div> I get the feeling Valve wasn't expecting the server to explode when they released HL2.
They should of, its one of the most wanted games next to Halo 2. Got home from school steam isn't even a program any more its just uter chaos. Hopyfully with open eyes i can start playing in an hour or 2. Nothing against Valve here I love them with my heart, but they should thought ahead alittle.

they DID think ahead, and thus the preloads.
those of us with the preload got it all done in under 10 mins.
and Steam DIDN'T explode (much to my surprise), it just slowed down (not exactly surprising)
but they should thought ahead alittle. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Heh, yeah that's what the pre-load was for.
It did however, take a while for my files to be unlocked. Guess the servers were a lil busy ^^
Shame I'm too busy to play...
buying games without going to the store is sweet

But spending $60 on a game and not being able to play it isn't.
Second, yah steam is better than won, but its still a P.O.S. , bugs with friends, and now its down when they finally release HL2.
It definitely is not down. Just wait the 5 minutes for hl2 to unlock.

Buying a computer and not knowing how to run the simplest program on it(even more simple than the OS) isn't either. First off, its idiodic to come onto a forum and just cry "OMG steam sux0r!"(because we all know you're just some stupid 12 year old whose crying because he hated going from a bad system(WON) to a semi-good system(steam). Then theres the whole fact that you didn't care to explain EITHER of your problems.
Tell us what your problems are, we'll try to help. Be an ****, you'll get ****. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Ok first off F you.

First off, steam isn't down. Guess what? I'm on it! And just to test your theory of something being wrong with the servers, I'm d/ling HL:Source! Guess what? No problems!
Also, bugs with friends lists probably are due to not being updated correctly. A way you can fix that very quickly is taking the SteamAPPs folder copying it over to somewhere else, uninstall steam, go to steampowered.com, d/ling their client of steam, install it, DO NOT START IT, open up the steam folder, copy/paste everything back in there, then start steam and let it update.
Tahdah, friends list fixed and several other things fixed. Otherwise it was a database problem.
I myself never had a friends problem, but many people I know do: I never had to do this.
<span style='color:red'>Edit:</span>Was writing before above post. If you're unable to log in, keep trying. Seems a lot of people are having that, but I'm having no trouble there, or anyone else that I know personally. Maybe your ISP is screwing up, or maybe(if you have SP2) the firewall auto-turned on like it does sometimes. If niether of those are true, it could be that your ISP itself is being overloaded from people trying to do the same thing as you: Be proud, many gamers live in your area.
Either way, steam is definately not down, niether is their login system.

Ok no, tons of people cant log on and according to the steam statuses, it is down.
EDIT:
Area88 stop quoting every post its not cool.
Quaunaut is right i'm on steam, but just can't register my key.
Also, it can't be down, or would have logged me out automatically. Or I wouldn't be able to join servers...or check monitor. Or do much of anything involving the internet on it.
Also, according to these two pages from the site:
<a href='http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html</a>
<a href='http://www.steampowered.com/status/content_servers.html' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/status/content_servers.html</a>
It is in fact up. Those things update on a regular basis- if it was down, I'm sure it'd be there.
In fact, they'd even have a news anouncement about it going down if it did so.
Silly question, but are you getting the password and username right?

Updates on a regular basis? Its one hour behind. So yah no.

Actually, its 20 minutes late atm.
Hence why it says: This page last updated: 2:53pm PST (22:53 GMT), November 16 2004
Its on the right, above the first graph. To the left is something saying: STEAM IS ONLINE. Notice?
its just wasting space better spent else where.

Its stuck on 2:53 pst, its already been a good 30 mins, so there is a problem.
Multiply that number by about 50. It's STILL reasonable!
After that I uninstalled and started over, and it was done from clicking "install" to being ready to play in about 40 minutes.
Still, almost 3 hours to install a game is ridiculous.
