    Certain tools, such as the map editor "Hammer," a modelling program XSI EXP for HL2, and the Source engine Model Viewer, are available. The full SDK, however, isn't out yet. Fairly reliable sources such as <a href='http://collective.valve-erc.com/' target='_blank'>this</a> are not giving a specific date yet, only saying "soon."

    Once the full SDK is released, it will be far easier to decide whether we will use the Source engine in the future.

    ah yes i see.

    The SDK did seem a little too small....

    What's currently available is the "mini" SDK mentioned in the recent interview, but apparently not nearly enough to make any porting decisions upon.

    Software Developer's Kit, I think.

    It's basically a set of tools for modders, often released AFTER the game is out for a while (not so in the case of HL2: Vavle wubs us mod communities), to help people mod the game. They usually are the same or similar tools that were used to actaully create the game.

    A "mini-SDK" for HL2 was released over steam that included some documentation, a link to Softimage XSI's site (used to make models), a model viewer, and the Hammer editor (used to make maps). The full SDK (to be released later) should include the code that modders can take advantage of, snippets of sample code, and other fun stuff.

    Yes, 'tis joyous stuff for new HL2 mods indeed. I suppose they're counting on the modding scene to make some kick-**** games <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well Well, look what forum you're talking in?

    NS= mod off Half-Life Engine!

    Of course they relie on people to mod kick-arsch games <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> !

    But there may be an influx of people attempting to mod HL2 which will release alot of '<span style='color:orange'>don't use this word or a swearfilter-evading replacement in a derogatory manner</span>' mods,

    but the big guns like NS,TS,Sven,ESF(possibly..would be <b>awesome</b>) etc etc
    i hope will make leeeeet games (sorry for the 'l33t speak'..can't resist...)

    There was a whole lot of mods made for HL1 when the SDK was released. Some never even got finished to a point of being playable. Others were so similar to each other that one or both would die out from lack of a solid fanbase. Eventually about a dozen or fewer (NS included <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) became the most well-known, most often-played ones, and it's been more stable as time has passed.

    Some mod teams are already announcing that they'll try to make something for HL2 whether they've done so for HL1 or not. I fully expect that out of the first 25 mods to be announced, more than a couple will collapse before releasing anything, while others will not see more than a few client-side patches before being abandoned due to players moving to more popular mods.

    oooooo
    now if I could mess around with programs a little more than my comp programming class is teaching...
    sounds like fun <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Bait-Boy, you'll need a team,

    Ever tried modelling, mapping, skinning, creating textures, coding (which includes specific model physics)

    etc,

    I suggest, that you make a really tiny mod, then keep working on it, and release further versions again & again & again until you have a 'playable' mod.

    i have a friend who is making a RPG mod for HL2,
