server problems still unanswered....
i have repeatedly asked this question in the forums and still have no answer....

AHGGG so frustrating...im trying to get a win NSDS up, and people cant join.

when some1 joins its like this:

Can't register variable voice_serverdebug, already defined
Dropped NSPlayer from server
Reason: Timed out

I also get this weird thing when i start the server:

Map validity check failure: 31/32 ready room spawns, 16/16 team one spawns, 48/48 team two spawns.

dont really know what that means....but here is my target for the shortcut just in case:

C:\HLServer\hlds.exe -game ns +log on -port 27015 +maxplayers 6 +map ns_bast

thx for all help

plzz some1 answer, or at least say something

    Linksys?
  • Stupendous_ManStupendous_Man Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 1875Members
    yes, linksys router and modem
  • TweedleTweedle Join Date: 2002-11-07 Member: 7581Members
See the other post sort of near this thread about getting a ded serv to work behind a linksys. Linksys is not made for that kind of use, and at high sustained packet rates, it will mangle packets, give errors, and drop clients.

Get a more robust/low-end commercial router, or buy a 486+ and two NICs. Or ditch the router all together.

Ahh, you got me there. From my personal experience, either hlds and all mods work, or they don't. (As far as that sort of error goes.) So I can't help you there. Hopefully someone with a bit more ns server info than myself will jump in and reply

I'd still recommend a linux router. $50 (or less, or free) for an old computer, get some old nics, and you've got a rock solid gateway.

Forget the linksys idea because I've been running a server (18 players) for over a year plus some behind a linksys router ($49 www.slickdeals.net) without a single glitch. I did get this error on one of my LAN machines trying to connect up to the server. Turned out that the voice comm wasn't setup on the machine and it would error out? Wacky. Fixed the machine and the problem disappeared.

Thank you for saying that. I can see that i am not the only one with a sucessful linksys router setup.

But usually on these routers ppl don't open the TCP 6003 and TCP 7002 along with UDP 27000-27015 (u don't need all the ports, but its easier that way).

I was having timeout problems, but 6003, and 7002 werent't open so ppl would just time out. Thanks to the forum, i fixed it. But u don't need these ports for a DoD server.

so then what is the solution to my problem other than throwing out my linksys router? (that i spent my last buck on by the way)

forward these ports to your NS server

    TCP:
    6003
    7002

    UDP:
    27000-27015

That "MIGHT" fix the problem. But about the soudn think u gata talk to ghetto

This just means that that particular map can't handle a 32 player server, because of a missing spawn location in the ReadyRoom. If you try to run one, you're going to have two people spawning inside each other. They -might- be able to get out of each other by jumping, but it's iffy.

    Sorry about the map bug.

This error is normal and is meaningless.

It's because of something CS specific in HL1110 I would guess because HLDS+CS doesn't have this error but HLDS+AnyOtherMod do.

In any case it's a red herring. If your server is working now for one map it should (in theory) work for all.

    joev.

About the port forwarding I just make my server be on the DMZ for my router. It hosts my web and ftp anyways. Problem solved.
Horrendous have you tried just reinstalling NS or HL?

it's easy to add a spawn

instructions for cs maps here - http://www.joe.to/32players.html

just find the spawn entities (i don't know what they are called, but they should be easy to figure out) and add one.

Its bad advice to tell ppl to run DMZ w/o knowing the consiquences.

DMZ allows your private IP to "share" with a public. Making ALL your ports open. This is especially bad for win32 servers (muhahahahah, evil i know). But on linux, its just as dangerous provided you haven't customized your box because (RH especially) alot of packages are installed, but never used or secured. Running DMZ is just asking someone to hack you. And i've had a few attempts on my box while it was DMZ, but lucky i closed it off before. So i just found those ports HL needs and opened them up and closed off the rest.

just scroll up a little and those are all the ports you need open.....
  • SmellslikefecesSmellslikefeces Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8194Members
Actually if you use some simple port scanning programs like Retina on your server it will tell you what ports are 'open' and let you close the ones you don't want as such. Yes DMZ is vunerable but it requires that people step up to the challenge because they want to have a server active.

wait...but for 27000 - 27015...do i need to open all? cant i just open 27015? (thatz my port)

Things you shouldn't enable unless you know what you are doing.

There are HUGE security risks in UPnP (Universal Plug N Play). Port triggering is different. Like ppl connect to port 80 on your public IP, but you have the router connect to your port 9090 on your private IP so some reason or another. Works for outgoing ports too. Bad example but yeah.
